Top Incoming Players, Freshman players to watch

Chuck, he's no ordinary 5th round pick.. just look at what he has done since the draft- Canadian Junior A Player of the year, Ontario Hockey Associations BJ Monro award for top Pro prospect, lead all of Canada in points per game last season at 2.40 ppg, jersey in Hockey Hall of Fame... we can go on... there's lots of press on this kid... Panthers even project him as a top 6 forward in the NHL.... I'm just glad he's a Wolverine! At least we get to watch him develop and sure hope he stays all 4 years. Imagine how good he will become learning from and playing for Red Berenson.

Some great reading:

If he's as good as you say, there is no way he'll stay all four years. He can get a degree from Michigan regardless.

It doesnt matter what I say. But I read in Michigan where Hyman said he wants to stay, which would be great. Just like Louie and Hagelin did and what David Wohlberg is doing. Our seniors make a huge difference, look at Shawn Hunwick. Thank goodness he is coming back.

I look at D'Amigo, Leafs took him in the 6th round. He had a great freshman yr at RPI and turned pro. Unfortunatley, he ended up in the O playing with Kitchener. I am hopeful high end College recruits like Hyman realize the value of a good education and the merits of playing college hockey. Rushing to play pro isnt always the best route.

Very true RR. As an RPI fan, it was tough seeing Jerry head out after one. Its hard for coaches to compete against the allure of $$$ and the agent errrr advisor whispering in the kid's ear that its "time to go"...and the agent can finally cash in. Harvard's Donato made comments similar to this following Louis Leblanc's departure to the O after his rookie campaign.

Believe me, I totally agree. However, it is very rare to see high-end players play four years of college hockey these days. I wish it wasn't, but it is. With the new CBA and salary cap in the NHL, teams need the young, cheap players and have been plucking guys out of the college and major juniors earlier than before the new CBA. And if you're a player, and your dream is to play NHL hockey, a lot of kids take the opportunity to go pro and then finish out their education during the summers.

Point is, no one is a guaranteed 2-year player these days, much less a 4-year player. And as much as players say the right things, it's hard to say no to an offer when it comes. Case in point, Craig Smith at Wisconsin.

I don't know is Anthony Day is going to be one of the best freshman in the country this season, but I can tell you I am excited to see what he can do as he begins his career as a Yale Bulldog. At the end of last season, I was lucky enough to record a podcast with Carter Camper and he began his journey as a pro hockey player. I decided it would be fun to interview someone at the start of the journey that Carter was completing last spring. So, we were lucky enough to sit down with Anthony Day and I think and fan of college hockey would enjoy it.
