Which is the best "sprawling [non-fantasy/sci-fi] epic with multiple intersecting story lines and overlapping lives" movie? Giant? or Grand Canyon?

I've never heard of Grand Canyon.

If you allow it, War and Peace is pretty obvious. Ten trillion characters and about twenty significant locations, and "sprawling" is an understatement. But I don't think that's what you had in mind.

It's a really good question. The Women is amazeballs with its 80 (or whatever) speaking roles, but even with all the subplots it is still driven by one master plot arc.

My mind runs to war movies or maybe westerns. It seems like the sort of thing a genre film would do best. There are a number of plot arcs in OK Corral but it's limited in scope to just two towns (and one walkabout).

I'm not counting movies like Night on Earth or How the West Was Won, where the subplots are episodic and non-intersecting. (By the intersection measure, it's hard to go wrong with Mystery Train or The Norman Conquests.) Spartacus has many characters but their relationships are all centered. Ben Hur is a little more decentralized but still not really what I think you mean.

I think Haku Or Haiku is still alive somewhere. That is a great thread.

Red Cliff (full version) is an outstanding epic with lots of intersecting storylines, etc. John Woo movie, to boot.

The 1991 movie, written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan. It's a bit long for some tastes at 2 hrs 15 minutes. It's on Ebert's list of Great Movies. an absolutely wonderful movie.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.
