Yeah, "Men in tights" is a terrific film. But simply not in the category of Flynn's "Robin Hood." There are very few guys who can wear tights and come off convincingly as straight and a charming rogue not to be messed with. Flynn was one. Everytime it's on TCM, Doc and I exchange e-mails about new things to look for. Like in a recent showing, Doc, who had seen it dozens of times, noticed (for the first time) a shot where you can clearly see a car drive by in the background.
The film was a hit on every level. Cast (let's not forget Gene Pallet as Friar Tuck). Score (Korngold absolutely at the top of his game). Sets. Action (notice in the first fight scene in the great hall there are a bunch of soldiers who aimlessly run back and forth behind the dining table, like targets in a shooting gallery. They never join the fight. Just run back and forth). Script. Color (magnificent). As Doc says, and I agree, just a wonderful motion picture. Among the very best ever made.
Flynn has that wonderful double take when he realizes the "friar" is really King Richard. He had a similar moment in the earlier "Prince and the Pauper" when he realizes this nutty kid he's been humoring and protecting really is the next King of England.
