Tom Anastos, it's time to resign

Re: Tom Anastos, it's time to resign

If that were the case, the money would have been raised by now. Or, at the very least, we would have had some sort of update -- any sort of update, good, bad or indifferent -- a while ago. MSU has been trying to get the needed funds for the "front door" for years. The project, apparently, is either stalled or dead.

I don't think the project is even listed on the Spartan Fund website anymore. I know they removed the status bar at the bottom of the page a while ago.

IIRC, the AD is trying to raise $25 million. A bad coach for an increasingly irrelevant team that will approach 30 losses this season won't help that pursuit, regardless of his connection to high-dollar donors.

Hey, what could better demonstrate his desire to see the program improve than removing himself as the head coach? I think that alone would show the commitment. ;):D

Here's a good thing about Anastos: He brought the classic script jerseys out of Nike-driven euthanasia. He knows something about style.

Frankly, I thought his all-black getup didn't look all that bad. That said, I'm also wearing a flannel shirt at work today that should have been thrown out 15 years ago.

I also liked the all black. And that is what's important here.

Re: Tom Anastos, it's time to resign

The obvious solution that's coming is that the department keeps Anastos as a fund raiser, something like WMU did with Jim Culhane or Notre Dame did with Dave Poulin. Since the renovations at Munn are still not to the level that the program is convinced they need (new locker rooms, concourse improvements, plaza entry, etc.) they need a point person to spearhead the effort. Anastos is well connected and organized, and we know he's a great marketer - he's just not cut out to be the head coach.

So put him in a position where he can help the program, avoid the big payout to remove him, and get a coaching staff that can recruit and win games. That sounds like the best possible solution in what is quickly becoming an untenable situation.
All this is precisely what TA sold Hollis on from the start, imho. These points comprise about 80% of the argument as to why he needs to stay. But the product on the ice is what tells me it's not as head coach. To me it's the perfect solution (but I'm not as confident that that's coming).

This is a huge reason TA is almost the exact 180 from his predecessor: Good rapport with his student-athletes, has reached out to the important Spartan hockey family lines, good marketing sense and fresh, workable ideas, better recruiting energy and approach ... almost no experience, doesn't have a great sense for adjustments with X's & O's, underwhelming skill development. I think I can counter each one of the above with its opposite when Comley was here.

I agree with just about all you say here. I would like to think that tCHHCoMSU could be shifted into a 'Development role for Fundraising, not just for Hockey, but all of the Athletic Department, and then hire someone who can Coach these kids and develop their on ice skills.
Where I disagree, is Rick Comley's reaching out to the Spartan Hockey Families (the Millers etc.)
I believe he did reach out, and was rebuffed in his attempt. Maybe (my thoughts) because he was not who they thought the program should be given to. Maybe they received their wish, to appoint the new HC when tCHHCoMSU was chosen with the caveat that one of their own was to be hired as an assistant.
As someone who is a bit of a conspiracy theorist.....My thoughts.
By the way.........I still think there were shots from the 'Grassy Knoll.

Re: Tom Anastos, it's time to resign

Buy him out by transferring his contract to a different position in the AD and a lifetime gift card to Steakhouse Philly. Anastos is always in there.

Re: Tom Anastos, it's time to resign

The Anastos hiring was a complete ****-up on MSU's part. That will reveal itself as time goes on. The guy had a couple years of experience coaching club hockey about 20 years ago. That's it. The hire should have been Danton Cole.....

Reading back on other things, I ran across this from exactly three years ago.

Re: Tom Anastos, it's time to resign

Anyone who thought hiring Tom Anastos was a good idea has to be a person who thinks coaching experience was not a requirement for getting the job. MI State would have been better off giving the coaching job to the equipment manager.

The thought crossed my mind last night that at best, five years ago Mr. Cole rolled his eyes, shrugged his shoulders and said "sure, knucklehead wants to try something different. I'll give (Hollis) a pass for simply being ignorant about the sport." At worst, Cole and the other obvious candidates to bring feel exceedingly dissed and will never set foot on this campus while the offending AD is still here.

There's a lot of mea culpa and other ground to make up.

Re: Tom Anastos, it's time to resign

So, Hollis has acknowledged there are problems on 1 Chestnut Road. He didn't say anything committal, just that the program needs "some recalibration."

Unrelated: I appreciate that he misses some of the old CCHA games. I would have tried to schedule perpetual home-and-homes with WMU, LSSU, BGSU and Notre Dame after making the move to the Big Ten, but I'm a bit weird like that.

I read that article as well. And am hoping that the unstated is that 'IF' the rest of this season is a bust. tCHHCoMSU will be replaced.
We shall see.

The Big Six got what it asked for when it blew up college hockey. And a lot more of those old CCHA rivals would love to play State, but not at the price of two trips to Munn in exchange for one return to those campuses. Tech & LSSU bit this time, but those deals won't be renewed. Sparty & Anastos deserve each other.

And I should qualify that "Sparty" as the administration. The fans deserve far better!

The Big ten is a boring league. Look at Penn State in the first half of the season. My god, they played 7 games against the Atlantic Conference. The only teams that play that much against Atlantic Conference teams are Atlantic Conference teams. Second half of the season they seem to be playing the same team every other week . If I were Big Ten fans, I would miss the huge selection of teams they once played in the CCHA and WCHA that were close to travel to and long time opponents.

Re-calibrate: As in move 1 seat to the right? Sounds either ominous or promising. If it doesn't mean replacing who's behind the bench, maybe I'll re-calibrate my dollars and social calendar.

Well, you can only dance with who will dance with you. Maybe, the ACC teams were the only ones who would schedule PSU when they were still a club, or first year D1 program. So in that case, PSU may be fulfilling contracts. As for the rest of the B10, I can state that MSU played Maine, LSSU, Denver, MTU, BC, N.Eastern, UND and NMU outside of conference. That is a nice group right there. Previous years add in UMass, UMass-Lowell, BU, Princeton, and St. Lawrence. As for Conference play, with only six teams, it will seem like the same teams week in and week out.

And to add something, When did a thread on tCHHCoMSU become a talking point for B10 Scheduling? There are different thread's for that. The MSU season thread. UM season thread. OSU, MINN, WIS and PSU season threads as well. Peace.

Amen. Screw MSU and Anastos.

I agree. It's the same teams playing each other week after week and weak after weak.
