Re: This Week In Hockey East - Volume III: A Return to Order or More Chaos?

At what point do we start to talk about how badly Providence has started? No goals in 4 games (admittedly against good teams in Mercyhurst and Clarkson). More recently, Providence has recruited primarily from Minnesota and they have been getting worse and worse. Not saying that these are necessarily related, but something clearly isn't working. Coach Deraney has been at Providence a long time but at some point he needs to turn the ship around and there is not much evidence that is in the works. Be interested in the thoughts of other HE followers on what the issue(s) are at Providence.

The top Minny kids are not saying "I hope Providence calls" thus he is getting the next 3 tiers of players. If St Cloud, Bemidji & MN State turn their programs around he probably will not get any MN kids. They are going in the right direction thus far.

When you fish in only one lake, you often do not see how big the fish are in other lakes.

PC has also historically had at least one goaltender on the roster at all times who is a consistent game stealer. That hasn't been the case since LaCasse graduated. No top end scorers and no top end goaltender make every game a contest. That has happened elsewhere in the recent past too:(. Thankfully, it appears that is trending upward.

A lot of tough ones here! Maine, Connecticut, Colgate, Vermont, RIT, Syracuse, all capable of pulling off surprises this year; Quinnipiac, Mercyhurst, Northeastern capable of being surprised; and UNH against RPI in a battle of the basement -- RPI have a worse record than UNH, but have also had a tougher schedule. BU looked very solid against the Blades but have questions in net, and Clarkson look like they may have the best of the big teams' freshman goalies.

UNH against RPI in a battle of the basement

..................Hockey East.............Overall
..................GP W L T Pts GF GA..GP W L T GF GA
Providence....0...0.0..0..0...0...0...4...0..4.0.0.13

UNH.............1...0.1..0..0...1...2...5...1..3.1.7..9

I think there is already a basement dweller. No battle necessary;) The 'Cats are starting slow, but I think we saw that coming. 2 ½ weeks into a season with 2/3 new coaches, and 10/24 players new student-athletes might not light the world on fire early, but don't expect them to roll over. The last time we played your Eagles in October with a less than star-studded roster...:D

Over on the D1 Scores and Updates thread a similar topic was opened. JoeHockey - longtime Providence follower - mentions that Illikainen and Slattery transferred to St Cloud State this offseason, which I had forgotten about. Clearly the SCSU, BSU. MN State effect is already well underway. What does it say about the current Providence team and coaching staff that 2 of their top players transferred out and performing well at their new school? Transfers like this were the first visible signs that the previous Connecticut coaching staff had lost control of the situation and that snowballed. Starting to wonder if the same type of implosion is in progress at Providence.

Being close to women's college hockey and the PC program over the last four years I would share a few things I have learned some of it from you all.

Hux told me early on Providence is a habitual slow starter - true and I am not worried after four games. Deraney spends a lot of time early on conditioning and on systems.

Great Goaltending at Providence has been a tradition. The program has a new goalie coach today but very hard to replace Double B who knew goalies and how to keep everyone loose with a story or joke. Lacasse was one of the best, big skates that are still not yet filled but could be. When she was there PC was usually outshot. The last two years PC has generated more shots/goals but suffered on Goals Against. With two junior goalies this could/should turn.

The two transfers from the program were the first in over 6 years pretty good streak. They are happy and thriving and others at PC have a chance to pick it up. Neither player as sophomores matched their freshman output at PC.

PC is small school, with first class facility and great catholic based education it will continue to have a base to recruit from in the US and Canada.

Deraney has a top Canadian in Carels and looks like they are working harder to recruit there.

Roth is a top assistant who I expect will be a D1 Head Coach in the future.

Time will tell.

GO FRIARS!
