This Week In Hockey East, Volume II: Now Even Hockey East-ier!

Re: This Week In Hockey East, Volume II: Now Even Hockey East-ier!

As BU and BC continue their season the latest 2013-2014 list from Hux made me think about next season. Besides graduation listed below are their other transfers announced or what impact will Olympics have on Hockey East rosters next year?

2013 Graduates
BU 9 + 1 Olympian?
BC 7 + 1 Olympian?
NU 6 - +1 Olympian?
UNH 7
PC 4
Vermont 3
Maine 5
UConn 3

I fully expect BC to runaway with the conference next year. Their best players are underclassmen and they already have a strong recruiting class coming in. Also, Boyles redshirted her sophomore year so I think she'll be back next year. I think BU and NU will have down years (assuming BU's recruiting class isn't full of future Olympians). I think PC and UVM will be much better. Don't see Maine, UConn or UNH being drastically better.

Can't believe we are starting this now but here goes....BC and NU should once again be in the upper echelon next season. BU will still be in contention because it has become part of their culture and they have talent. I think UNH, PC, and Vermont will be fighting it out for the 4th spot with a chance to fit into 3rd position. Maine and UConn will still battle hard and cause concern.

UNH loses 7 players to graduation and their leadership and character will be missed. The team will miss the offense created by Lavoie (17 pts) and Horn (14 pts) however the other 5 seniors only accounted for12 points in total during conference play (they did bring other important qualities to the team). The team will still be challenged to score and that is something that will have to improve! I wouldn't count out the Cats in 2013-14 as I think they will be a lot hungrier this coming season.

Depending on who UCONN hires as the new coach.

Those underclassmen could possibly be missing due to Olympics ?. If I'm not mistaken both are on the USA Worlds camp roster for this spring. Off Course, the top player from BU and NU would be missing for the same reason.

Re: This Week In Hockey East, Volume II: Now Even Hockey East-ier!

I like the Providence class - The incoming class is made up of three players from MN, one from Colorado, one from Canada and one from Austriathey helped themselves and here is why:

Forwards - Team finished 9th in the country in scoring and have added at least a couple of scorers and depth - will have 12 forwards on roster and only graduated 25% of points.

Cassidy Carels, F, Pembina Valley/Canada U18 Bruxelles, MB as a 5' 6" LH shot senior played 62 games, 51 G, 41 A, 92 pts., 52. As a junior she led t Pembina Valley to Esso Cup Championship in 68 games, 58 G, 35 A, 93 pts, 74 PIM.

Janine Weber, F, Vienna Sabres/Austrian National Team, Innsbruck, Austria brings international experience and maturity ('91 birth year) to the young PC Team. She is 5'6", shoots left and led all scorers in the World Women’s Championship Div. IA in April 2013.

Arianna Reid, F/D, Lakeville South, Lakeville, MN played under Coach Natalie Darwitz. As a senior at D in 27 games she had 14 G, 14 A for 28 pts and 32 PIM. As a Jr in 25 games she had 21 G, 9 A for 30 pts. and 18 PIM.

Defense - The Friars struggled to limit goals and finished 30th in the country without G Lacasse and D Friedmann and Jensen last season. The roster shows 9 D so battle for ice time with 2 Sr, 2 Jr, 2 So and 3 Fr.

Kendra Goodrich, D, Rosemount HS, Rosemount, MN - tall 5' 10" with long reach and big shot. Early commitment to PC in her JR year. As a senior in 27 games, 22 G, 16 A, 38 pts, 20 PIM. As a junior in 21 games, 10 G, 13 A, 23 pts., 12 PIM.

Liv Halvorson, D, Benilde St Margaret HS - talented hybrid type attacking D who shoots right as a senior in 24 Games, 9 G, 16 A, 25 pts., 16 PIM, and as a junior in 28 games, 14 G, 27 A, 41 pts and 56 PIM.

Ariana Buxman, D, Shattuck St Mary, Glenwood, CO - late add from strong SSM program known to develop good hockey players, grew up playing boys hockey and scored 7 points as a SR at SSM over 58 games.

Hmm, somewhat underwhelming compared to some of the last few classes they've had. I know not all schools have announced yet but who seems like they have the best group of incoming frosh in the conference so far?

I agree - relatively weak class overall - no comparison to the BC and Providence recruiting classes IMHO. Except for Litchfield (very strong goalie), most of these players were not the marquee players on their club teams (I don't count prep school teams). I'd expect more from a Division 1 recruiting class - you need support players but you have to attract a FEW marquee players also.

Absolutely STUNNED that Ashley Salerno would transfer to UVM after 3 years at Amherst, but had heard that Plumer tried to get her to move last season. Great player (and I've heard a great kid as well) that could have played D1 from the start, so it's surprising to give up an Amherst diploma in exchange for 1 year of bottom third Division 1 hockey. She doesn't get additional years of eligibility for some reason, right?

There are also the players that will miss several weeks for pre-Olympic camps and the Games themselves. Michelle Karvinen of UND comes to mind in that regard.

A little bit of Excel work on the team stats at http://www.uscho.com/standings/hockey-east-women/2012-2013/ and individual stats at http://www.uscho.com/stats/conference/hockey-east-women/2012-2013/ gives the following results for the hits that the various HE teams are taking due to graduation and Olympics:
<center><table>
<tr><td>College</td><td>Goals by <br>top scorers</td><td>... by top scorers<br>who are there<br>next year</td><td>Next year/<br>this year</td>
<tr><td>Boston College</td><td>97</td><td>60</td><td>0.618556701</td>
<tr><td>Boston University</td><td>91</td><td>47</td><td>0.516483516</td>
<tr><td>Connecticut</td><td>0</td><td>0</td><td>--</td>
<tr><td>Maine</td><td>6</td><td>0</td><td>0</td>
<tr><td>New Hampshire</td><td>32</td><td>20</td><td>0.625</td>
<tr><td>Northeastern</td><td>94</td><td>20</td><td>0.212765957</td>
<tr><td>Providence</td><td>72</td><td>50</td><td>0.694444444</td>
<tr><td>Vermont</td><td>25</td><td>17</td><td>0.68</td>
</table></center>
The right column is obviously a very crude measure, but it's a start. BC survives the loss of Carpenter and the seniors surprisingly well, Northeastern is in serious trouble without Coyne, Providence could mount a serious challenge with good frosh.

Awesome piece of analysis!! However, a missing key factor is how many of the remaining goals could be attributed to the missing players being on the ice. In particular, Carpenter created a lot of the goals for her line even when she wasn't the scorer just by being on the ice and creating the space for her linemates to score because the defense focused on her...her absence will result in fewer opportunities/goals for the returners as well.

Re: This Week In Hockey East, Volume II: Now Even Hockey East-ier!

Great stuff I think the effect is even a little greater when you take total goals or total points - graduated + Olympians.

Thanks for the insights!

Sure, though you could say the same about Poulin at BU and Coyne at NU. And obviously the most goals doesn't necessarily win the hardware -- just look at BC this year. So take this as a crude measure of a team's depth, perhaps close enough to reality to be interesting.

Vermont's Megan Dalbec and Maine's Kate Massey were named Top Scholar-Athetes

The key for BC may come at the other end of the ice, having to replace some big minutes on the blue line. Other top teams like Cornell and Minnesota are in the same boat.

Minnesota in particular, with the damage the Olympic selection has done to their defense. For BC, Bolden was a phenomenon and Burns solid, but Bender, Pfalzer and Johnson are all coming along nicely. However, you're right, the incoming class seems very attack-oriented; maybe the plan is simply to outscore everyone, no matter how much they score, with the Field / Trivigno / Skarupa line likely to be the most productive in HE.

Not saying it's a good plan, mind you, but it might be the plan.

(A very different approach from the Olympic team, where the plan seems to be to try to shut Canada down completely and hope Amanda Kessel gets two breakaways a game...)
