Re: This Week In Hockey East, Volume II: Now Even Hockey East-ier!
Since I posed the question, I'll take a stab at it. Maybe if I'm close I'll get extra credit points in my weekly picks!
Boston College 27 points
Boston University 18 points.............14 games played...Remaining CT x 2 (home and home), UNH, Provi x 2, BC x 2 (home and home)
There was some discussion / speculation that maybe BU fell victim to the flu, which might explain their recent demise. Considering how much tighter UConn has looked in 2014, if the Terriers don't find a cure for whatever ails them, they could easily end up traveling for quarter finals.
Northeastern 16 points..................15 games played...Remaining UVM, Provi, CT x 2, UNH x 2 (home and home)
I can picture Northeastern finishing strong, and taking second place solidly, but they have one of the tougher schedules remaining, with the added demands of the Beanpot, and a short bench. the next three games are must wins to gain some distance, but in reality, every HE game is must win for second place. Should be no problem for hosting in quarters though.
Vermont 15 points........................14 games played...Remaining NU, Provi, ME, UNH x 2, Provi x 2
Call it timing to get BU for two when they're down, or, peaking and not giving BU a chance, Vermont went a long way toward becoming the masters of their fate by winning those 4 points this weekend. There are enough points up for grabs between the series with Providence and UNH to make or break them, though, and a surging Northeastern before that.
Providence 12 points.....................14 games played...Remaining BC, UVM, NU, BU x 2 (home and home), UVM x 2
With Buie out, PC has surely lost some spark, but the team should be used to her appearances and disappearances from the line up at this juncture. The 4 points they left in Storrs are a huge miss, as are the two to Maine. It's really hard to move if you can't get points from the teams below. PC has some tough games left, so now they will have to steal their points from teams above them, or hope the rest of the rest tanks or neutralizes each other if they want to play at the new Schneider in the post season.
New Hampshire 10 points...............13 games played...Remaining ME x 2, BU, CT, UVM x 2, NU x 2 (home and home)
The advantage UNH has right now, is that we have put BC in the rear view, and have 2 points to show for it, and are at least a game in hand on everyone in front of them in the standings. Obviously, the turmoil affects the team, but they are adjusting to the new chemistry, and really played a good two games against BC, giving them all they could handle on Sunday. It is crucial that UNH take all 6 points from Uconn and Maine. U Conn could be the spoiler if they get the points, as they are hovering a point out of sixth and are the only other team that has only played 13 league games.
Connecticut 9 points.....................13 games played...Remaining BU x 2, BC, UNH, NU x 2, ME x 2
UConn has shown signs of life, for sure, but they will need about 9 more to get through their schedule with more than a point or two if history can predict the future.
Maine 5 points.............................14 games played...Remaining UNH x 2, UVM, BC x 2, CT
They know they are in the playoffs, it's just a matter of can they claw their way out of the Eagles grip. Ii don't think it's possible, and I hope my 'Cats make me right!
Final Standings (Regular Season)
1. BC - Whatever.
2. Northeastern - Done with BU and BC, and although it's any team on any day, NU seems to have found their groove. They are about one injury away from uhoh, though.
3.UVM - 3rd is theirs to lose, and they will have to play every game on all cylinders or they will.
4.UNH - I know - I have a certain bias, but I have seen this team take charge of their situation and regroup, and I don't think anyone who saw the games against BC this weekend will disagree. The things that kept them from taking points this weekend were mistakes, and correctable ones at that.
5. BU - They have made themselves appear vulnerable in the past few weeks, and that's not a good way to be seen five days before February. They are bleeding, and teams that otherwise might have thought themselves outmatched, can surely smell it.
6. Providence - They have a pretty tough schedule to finish, and they have not been able to put it all together at the same time very consistently this season, and they are finishing with two at UVM. not an easy trip. Can they move up? Sure, but they better bring it every game, or they could be seeing a lot of Gutterson Field House next month
7. UConn - Could spoil it for anyone in their path, but it's still a tough road.
8. Maine - Stranger things have happened, right?
I realize I have my blue lenses on, but there is no reason to think UNH can't take 10 more points at least, but the jump is predicated on BU continuing to struggle, while the remainder of their opposition is hitting their stride.
