Look at Russia's Quarterfinal, Semifinal, Final run...
Quarterfinal vs Finland: Down 3-1 after 42:24, score 2 goals in the final 3:41 to tie and won in OT.
Semifinal vs Sweden: Down 3-2 after 56:41, score a goal to tie with 1:27 left in regulation and won in shootout.
Final vs Canada: Down 3-0 after 26:27, score 3 goals in the first 7:29 minutes of the 3rd and go on to win 5-3.
That is a pretty crazy run for anyone to make.

Its already being called "The Worst 16 Minutes in Canada's History." :)

I don't know how many Russians play junior hockey in Canada. One thing I will say, though, is that there is someone on a video streaming website that posts each edition of Coach's Corner, so we should be able to see it on there. I wonder how many letters Mr. Cherry will receive about this.

One - Bobkov, who stunk in game one, and was a bit of a hero in the gold medal game (and, BTW, that was his entire tourney, as back-up in the rest of the games). Every other kid plays Jr. hockey in Russia. The web-stream I listened to (an English-speaking European feed) said that the Russian Coach, Valeri Bragin invited several CHL kids, but sent them all home, saying specifically that the kids playing in Russia were better hockey players:

While disappointed there was no gold again this year, the U.S. had a very strong showing minus the Canada game. It was a very entertaining tournament to watch, and I certainly look forward to next year's edition.

Their run which you list above is just unbelieveable - remarkable.

I sent the link to a Russian girlfriend of mine and her initial response was "embarrassing". My response was just the opposite. They should celebrate like that. They just achieved something that no one in the world, even themselves likely, expected them to. They went for it, never quit, persevered, and refused to be beat. They proved that absolutely anything is possible. Good for them. Quite frankly, I would have wanted them on the plane. Just goes to show that people don’t understand what it takes to achieve great things, nor the level of euphoria that comes from believing that anything s possible and making it happen despite what anyone else says or thinks. I am actually proud of them.

I'm off for lunch at a Russian Samovar and will have a couple of infused vodkas to celebrate myself !!

While the results on paper were "strong", having watched every game, including one of the pre-tournament games live, I don't know if I'd call it a strong showing.

The US played well enough to win and down to their opponent pretty much throughout IMHO. They only turned it on when they had to and in their one true test against Canada, they failed miserably.

I'll certainly take a bronze medal but with the talent that was on this year's team its a shame they couldn't come together better and at least put a better fight against Canada. That will always be a big black eye from this WJ just because of the lack of effort and desire from my standpoint.

Rallying to beat Sweden yesterday certainly was a nice way to cap it off though and I'm glad we just didn't fold up the tent and pout about it.

They beat a good Finland team, pounded Slovakia, shutout the relegated Germans, and beat a good Swiss team. They got beaten soundly by Canada to be sure, but I don't know how having more fight in them would have generated a different result. Campbell had a whale of a tourney, and winning a medal in back to back years has never happened. USA Hockey has made significant strides over the past several years to become a relevant program in this tournament.

I could not agree more with your assessment. Canada had the weight of National Credibility & Pride on its' shoulders for the USA game and looked almost supernatural in their effort against USA. I think history bore out that Canada was not that good and USA was not that bad. A 5-1 medal performance should not but looked on negatively by anyone knowledgeable about hockey. The US club showed some serious character in the response in the final day of the tournament and the program will learn a lot about how much it takes committment wise to deliver at a medal level going forward. Just a matter of time before USA is regularly competing for Gold at WJC.

Congratulations to USA Hockey and the 2011 team members!

This is juniors hockey, this is one of many setbacks they will face as they learn the game of hockey. Their families are still proud and supportive of them after all they won a medal, they beat the US team.

This is great for hockey. Have to admit that after the Olympics I started to think that hockey was becoming more of a contest between US and Canada, nice to see someone else win now and then.
