Unbelievable. You never expect to see a team blow a 3-0 lead, but especially not Canada.

ETA: Also, I'm scared for next year now. How hungry is Canada gonna be after blowing this and not winning either of the last 2 years? Then add in the fact they're playing on home soil. Either way, though, I'm glad the US gets to play them in group play.

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

"SHorty the Shill" Maguire warns Russia, "....doesn't matter, Canada will have 7 back next year". What a little arse

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

In honor of last years song:
Мама, не плачь.
Русские хоккей это сделать или умереть.
Возьмите хоккейной клюшкой в руках.
Уходя на чужбине.
Брагин сказал, что я звезда.
России по хоккею будет идти очень далеко.
Возьмите Gatorade в стекло.
Мы только ногами ваших трахать задницу.

Interesting how the crowd started, not booing, but audibly griping, when the puck jumped over the point's stick with about 1 1/2 minutes left. "This is their sport, dammit, and we'll grind down our children when they don't perform to our cocky expectations..." Were it not for the 1996 World Cup, I may very well have rooted for the Canadians today. Maybe.

Eep.

Russia
Sweden
Switzerland
Slovakia
Latvia

Which one is tougher? :)

I'll take it, though. I think playing Canada in group play last year was a huge boost even though we lost. Showed us exactly what we were up against. We didn't know what we were up against this year. Finland and Switzerland are good, but they're not Canada. And I'm not scared of the Czechs. To say they've been unimpressive these last 2 years would be an understatement. They're not an elite team right now, at least not at the junior level.

Can't really say the Danes scare me either. The more I look at the groups, the more I think they are pretty even. It depends on how much better the Swiss get.

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

Well this is one Canadian who is not all that unhappy with the result. I can tell you there are thousands of us that feel the same. As Americans I think you've seen the same thing with basketball and baseball dream teams. Just when you think your the very best at something there always is someone to come around to knock you down a couple of pegs. I'm a hockey fan first and a Canadian hockey fan after that and this win by Russia was good for hockey. We need Russia in the mix and they were beginning to fade hopefully this gives them a shot in the arm. I think it looks good on TSN and some of my countrymen who have become hockey bullies. I wish they'd all take a pill and relax and remember that this is just a hockey tournament played by teenagers. Monday night our teenagers played like men....tonight they were teenagers. Congratulations Russia!

I'll take the heat here (wouldn't be the first time :D) and agree with my countryman (woman?). I left work as the second period ended and walked into the house with about 5 minutes left.

My wife said she didn't want to call me with updates because she knew how I'd feel. Stunned is how I felt -- didn't expect Team Canada to fold like a cheap tent.

But Vulcan is right - it's a tough pill to swallow, but the Russians battled back like they did in their past two games. Congrats to them and a tough life lesson for our kids.

But they are just kids -- if this is the worst that happens to them in life, they'll be lucky.

BTW, congrats to the US for taking the bronze on home soil.

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

First, congrats to Team USA on a bronze medal victory. You got it back together showing character and playing like a team.

Second, it appeared that the Canadians thought they had won the game after the 2nd period. Doesn't work that way. Congrats to the Russians for a terrific comeback and condolences to the Canadian fans and team.

Third, congratulatiions to Jack Cambell on a terrific tournament and selection to the All Tournament team.

Next year maybe another New Year's Eve game, USA-Canada.

Re: The WJC Thread. USA! USA! USA!

Nice to see for the first time the USA obtaining two consecutive medals. Things are slowly moving up.
