The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

16-22 inches in the next 2 days here, supposedly. You always like to hear "potentially dangerous situation" and "historic" in your winter weather forecasts. Is Minnesota not getting this Snowpocalypse? My aunt and uncle need to drive to Rochester on Wednesday afternoon.
We're getting it, we have just raised our standards for Snowpocalypses after some of the storms earlier this year, this is just an annoyance at this point. (Also, I think we're just supposed to get 5-8", nothing too extreme)

CNN is saying the storm will impact over 100M people and hit almost every state before it is done. There are currently storm watches/warnings in 30 states (and ME and NH should join them shortly) so it looks like a massive storm.

I guess they don't teach the 4 cardinal directions in Meteorology 101....

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Uhhhhhh? Low pressures spin counterclockwise, and wind is always given the direction it comes from. I see nothing wrong with that picture.

So Indiana and Michigan are west of Chicago?

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

No, why? The low is shown east of Chicago and will therefore gnerate NE winds in Chicago.

Look closely at the map.

Now tell me if it reads "northeast" winds or "northwest" winds.

What am I missing? The map itself shows nothing of wind direction, the text box says "Strong Northeast winds with gusts up to 45 MPH." If the low is where it shows on the map the winds will, indeed, be from the Northeast in Chicago. I'm with hcokeyplayer1015.

I'm hoping they're right about the accumulations of snow; I wouldn't have seen that much since back in college in Marquette.

I made a resident of Indiana's jaw drop when I said that snow removal in the UP on campus (and some city streets) is done by front end loader. Routinely.

No, the map reads "strong northwest wind" but the accompanying arrow (and you know, logic) indicate wind will be from the northeast. East...west...no difference.

Wait...are we looking at the same map? My version says nothing about 45 mph.

I'm seeing the same map as you, it definitely says northwest.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

looking at the picture posted by Priceless, it's definitely two different pictures. :weird:

I thought so. Their file structure means the picture in the link he posted will change unless it's cached.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

To me, Raceboarder and Priceless posted two different photos. Looks correct in Raceboards post.

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Both of those pictures look identical to me, no differences showing up on my screen. :p

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

Bah... For whatever reason, the link that I pulled off the NWS site seems to change... They now have a different pic up... The original picture I was talking about is the one the Priceless posted... They have an arrow pointing from NE to SW and right next to that, they say "Strong Northwest Winds"....

Re: The Winter Weather thread - 2010 - 2011. Shovel this!!

It can snow at that temperature - you just need a strong enough system to the south to pull the moisture northward over the shallow dome of frigid air.

Well, right. But typically you don't see those. It's maybe once or twice a season if at all where you're going to see subzero temps and a system that strong.
