The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Here's how I see it. Maine has a tremendous offense and that is their key to the season. That offense has to however beat a strong UVM defense and one of the top goalies in the conference. If Madore is on his game, Maine isn't going to score a lot of goals. The question becomes then can UVM? As such, to answer Gus' question, yes UVM can hang with Maine, and the way the Eagles are putting up goals, they can hang with them as well. Does that translate into a win...well who knows, but you aren't headed to Providence...

Now, if the Zebra's would quit calling back goals UVM would likely be 2-0-1 at this point in the season with a win and tie over DU and we wouldn't be having this conversation. Time to call out the refs... Sneddon should appoint one of his asst's so that after the fact he isn't taking the game suspension.

This is a new, hilarious level of blaming the officials. Stop it, you're going to make the SMT's jealous.

"Mediocre"? A team that is ranked in the top 25 or so in the country, who has beaten teams like BC (twice), BU (twice), Denver, UMD, Yale in the past year?

LOLOLOLOLOL. You Vermont fans are cute. You guys beat BU twice and BC twice sometime in the last decade, huh? Did you raise a banner for that?

Hey you forgot to include Air Force!!

Hey guys how is Decenzo looking? I still follow UVM hockey even though Corey Carlson is long gone. I watched Anthony throughout his High School Career. Thank you!

Is BC going to raise a banner after picking up BU's drunk leftovers?

Nice article on Brett Leonard @ burlingtonfreepress.com/oncampus. Big game this weekend can't get in to a run and gun game with Maine. We will also need to stay out of the box. Maine has one of the top powerplays in the country. Sounds like Wahs is healthy they are goinig to need his scoring ability. We need our powerplay to start putting some in the back of the net. Should be a great college game.

My limited perspective on Decenzo is he has a lot of jump and plays agressive. He has gotten good playing time so far. The coaches obviously like him given his playing time. But we are 3 games into it so its hard to say how things will pan out for him.

Liked the play of the 4th line last week (especially H.T. Lenz and Leonard) great energy. Lenes-like. Nice to see the hard work of Leonard paying off. See below. Also agree that Stalberg needed something to change.

Ice chips: Leonard, Stalberg and UVM women
By Ted Ryan

Leonard shines: UVM hockey coach Kevin Sneddon summarizes the play of South Burlington native Brett Leonard this season in three words: “He’s been fantastic.”

A senior forward, Leonard has centered the Catamounts’ fourth line, which has shown energy and an ability to annoy and disrupt opposing teams. Leonard’s effort and darting move ignited the game-tying goal by another local product, Ben Albertson, against Merrimack.

“He worked his tail off again this summer. He’s gotten better every year in terms of strength and conditioning and he’s one of the stronger guys on the team per body weight,” said Sneddon of the 5-6, 168-pound Leonard.

“He’s one of those guys, if I tell him he’s got to play defense, he’ll play defense. If I say you’re going to play wing today, okay. He kills penalties and he blocks shots. He does everything the right way and he’ll be a good role model for the younger guys,” Sneddon said. “He’s an energy guy and he’s got to play that way.

Stalberg to wing: Sophomore Sebastian Stalberg started the year as the team’s first-line center. Against Maine, he’ll move to wing with center Chris McCarthy and wing Wahs Stacey.

“He’s a player who’s got to focus on offense,” said Sneddon. While all UVM players are expected to be responsible defensively, centers carry a heavier defensive burden.

“Center is not his natural position,” said Sneddon, who said the lack of veteran centers prompted the earlier move. “It might have been hurting him a little bit in that he wasn’t touching the puck as much, wasn’t up in the play as much as we would like.”

Stalberg endorsed the move. “I’m feeling positive going back there. I like dumping the puck down and getting in on the forecheck,” he said.

“I feel I can contribute with a little more energy. Center is kind of like, slow it down, make plays, be in the right position to read and react a little more.”

So should he be shooting more? “Exactly.”

Vermont will still be very young at center with sophomore McCarthy, freshmen Matt White and Anthony DeCenzo and senior Leonard.

It's funny you should ask about BC raising a banner. Tonight BC raises their 2010 national title banner. Maybe someday you guys will raise one of those... ah who are we kidding, probably not...

Thanks for your interest in BC hockey.

Maine did both when they raised the banner in '99. :D

pretty good so far. he looks to be responsible defensively and also has some ability to create offense...little early to tell. he must work hard in practice and the coaches must see an upside to him as he was on the first line last weekend. sounds like he's moving to center on either second or third line this weekend as Stalberg moves to wing.

Thanks guys! Great talking to you and I wish the Cats a great season!

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

That was a tough one....but keeping it in perspective if you told me prior to the game they would lose 3-2 in ot I would have said they must have competed hard and that's not a bad outcome against that team at this point in the season. There are obvious holes but even giving up 42 shots I thought they played well defensively for the most part. I liked how they played NyQuist physically in the first period, especially Miller but they hit him less as the game went along, thus his ability to make plays. He's the type of player you can't give any space to, almost have to shadow him.

I posted weeks ago it seemed this team was seriously short of centers. The face-off issue was an obvious one tonight, think it was like 49-22 Maine and killed them on goals 2 and 3. But it's not just in the circle, all of the centers seem more like wings. McCarthy played better last year and was more dangerous as a wing and I'm not so sure White and Desenzo are ready to play center in Hockey East. I don't know, just seems like uvm has enough talented forwards but they are kind of a square peg in a round hole currently.

Liked Stalberg with McCarthy but might like to see Marshall with them to see if he has any scoring touch at all. Then maybe give Leonard a shot at center between Brickley and Stacey. Why not use his energy and work ethic with a talented line that sees more icetime at this point. It's clear to me he deserves more icetime and I'm not one of these fans that is bias in favor of the local product. I think the offense could use his quickness and spark on a higher line. I do understand the importance of a fourth line that can create energy also so that would be the only drawback as with Roos out it makes for a vulnerable, inexperienced fourth line.

Did like the effort and compete level though against a Maine team that can go far this year if they get the goaltending. The road trip should be good for the team though next weekend and hopefully they can grab some points.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

Tough loss last night the Cats played well enough to get a win. The face off 's hurt them big time. They have been able to hold high scoring teams to 2 and 3 goals but still won't work only scoring 1 or 2 goals a game. They competed very hard last night to bad there was nothing to show for it. I agree that they should give Leonard a shot at a higher line. He is a very high energy hard worker and skilled player that maybe able to help generate some more offense seems to work his tail off every shift. Madore has been great in net so far and has kept them in games. Maybe getting on the road will help the Cats as well as a few bounces going there way.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

For those of us who "live and die" for our favorite college hockey team, there comes a time when that is secondary. And that time came to Pioneer fans this weekend.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — University of Denver center Jesse Martin sustained three neck fractures in Saturday night's hockey game at North Dakota and was transferred to a Minneapolis hospital this morning where doctors are deciding if emergency surgery is required to relieve swelling of the spinal cord, the player's father said.

Re: The University of Vermont Official 2010-2011 Season Thread : Part 1

I agree that Leonard has earned some more playing time, at one point Sat I think he had won 5 of 6 faceoffs which must mean everyone
else didnt win any given the final faceoff stats.

Thru 5 games and exibs Vermont has shown that they can compete with anyone but have yet to make the big play to finish off a game, this
week the Cats will get 2 teams that are not at the Denver/Maine level and we can only hope that the Cats keep up the same level of
play and can get some needed league points
