THE University of MICHIGAN 2021-22

Opposing fans are happy Michigan is gone but I have seen nothing to suggest Michigan or Michigan fans care about this. But in any event, good luck to the GLI without its best program.

while indirectly, you said it...

who would want a team and their fans involved in something they don't want to be involved in?

dear mel et al... please don't let the door hit you on the way out.

and if being dishonorable and deceitful is part of being the "best program" - have at it. last i heard their "contractless coach" is still being investigated for a reason, or two...

people are still misunderstanding the reasons of why all this is a blessing, possibly even for all sides - which is completely independent of how the exit was made.

they won't be missed...

They won't be missed? Bold statement when the GLI has yet to even take place in Grand Rapids--without Michigan. And I am a fan of a Beanpot school who has always enjoyed the GLI. I hope it succeeds but it's not even close to a guarantee that it will moving forward.

Whether it does or doesn't at least will not be a result of active obstruction by one of the participants.

Regardless of what "side" you are on, I feel this is a win for everyone involved. Michigan decided they no longer cared about the GLI; they are out. Tech/State/Ferris/Western are happy to participate; they are in. It's not an NHL venue, but it's a damn good one in a fun city. I don't think with proper marketing (and geography on their side) attendance will be a huge concern - that of course remains to be seen. I look at this as an amicable breakup. You want out, ok, but I'm keeping the dog. Cool? OK. Let's drop the puck and have some fun!

Meh. Could barely watch it when we were in it- just went once when it moved to the Pizzarena. And hardly anyone was there. It was fun to see the games, but having it be the same thing every year started to get kind of old. Yea, I know the beanpot has the same 4 teams over and over- but since it's at a time where players, students, and other fans are there- the atmosphere is probably quite different. I don't know the full history, but my impression is that Tech did this to get fans in SE MI a way to see games live. Which may have worked 30-40 years ago- but when we went, there were not enough fans to justify the expense- even when Tech fans were the highest population.

I'm sure the haters will not like this- but seeing that the number of players that could be at the World Jrs could be more than a line, it's a significant problem to a program when so many players are playing for their country. So I very much get where Mel is coming from.

But, hey, if you want to hate, go for it. You are far, far, far from the first. And you won't be the last.

I would also add LCA is not taking near as much heat as they should, but it's also understandable why they didn't care if the GLI moved somewhere else (spoiler alert: it's money; it's always money).

The reason for the GLI starting is well known and repeated in every advertisement, article, summary, game program, and team website. It wasn't "to get SE MI tech fans to see games". I agree though that it had gotten stale. Without any hateful thought in my body, I bid a fond farewell to Michigan. It would have been refreshing for the reasoning to have been presented more transparently though. It took Mel's old boss Suzanne to do that part.

Ferris and WMU are within an hour of Grand Rapids, MSU has always had a strong presence on the western side of the state, and Tech was the tournament originator. The GLI will be fine.

Ferris being within an hr of GR is like saying Harvard is within 15 minutes of the TD Garden. What does it actually mean? I'd also like to know how you define "fine".

Ferris to GR is a straight shot up US-131, might be cutting it close to an hour but it's possible. As for fine, I'll let you speculate.

Mid-West driving geography lesson. 1 hour drive is more or less an hour assuming at or above speed limit driving, which is 95% of the time. Distances are greater between cities/locations, so an hour drive in for a sporting event is nothing to Michiganders. With Grand Rapids being the largest city in Western Michigan, it is a natural draw for people in the area.

Also of note, MSU has a medical school/hospital/campus in downtown Grand Rapids.

Fine is being able to have a big alumni/family event based around college hockey. As long as it is near break-even, Tech will be more than happy to host.

It's 56 miles from downtown Grand Rapids to Big Rapids. If you can't make that in 45 minutes, something is wrong (weather, construction, etc.)

Let me try:
Harvard is the Michigan of the East
Ferris is.... "if you can't get into high school, go to Ferris"

nope, I don't get it either

As for not being asked to participate in the GLI, you can see how upset the Michigan fans are. Honestly, rotating the 4th team through the other schools in Michigan is boring. I miss when we could get a big name from outside the state to participate. I blame the B1G hockey conference.

The meaning is Ferris might be deemed close by just like Harvard is to the TD Garden. That doesn't mean they'll bring a significant number of fans.

Ferris hockey draws 1,700 or so fans a game. No matter where the games would be located, there isn't a large FSU hockey fanbase to pull from.

Michigan people are so arrogant, they project their arrogance on other schools even. Harvard aint' that it used to be btw.

The GLI will be completely kaput soon regardless if we played in it or not. It was fun when it was in a hockey arena, not a corporate themepark like LCA is.

It will flop in GR. If Tech wants it to live on, a complete overhaul is needed. They should move it to the U.P. (pick the rink), have it be LSSU, MTU, NMU and a fourth team that is different every year and make it the UPI: Upper Peninsula Invitational.

Random comments.
Ferris has more fans than Harvard.
Harvard is not the same as it used to be, it's better. Seriously, it is.
Michigan is a great school, but Harvard of the midwest might be a stretch. Harvard of the midwest would be University of Chicago.
The tourney will be fine long term in GR. No it won't draw as well, but the costs are a lot lower so it won't need to. Will I go? Maybe once in a while. I do go to some lower Michigan games but not all of them. Especially not at Ferris.
I don't view Michigan people as arrogant. Not like UND, or Denver anyway.
There used to be the Superior cup. It was Tech, NMU, Duluth and LSSU. Too bad it went away.
