THE University of MICHIGAN 2021-22

The GLI will be completely kaput soon regardless if we played in it or not. It was fun when it was in a hockey arena, not a corporate themepark like LCA is.

It will flop in GR. If Tech wants it to live on, a complete overhaul is needed. They should move it to the U.P. (pick the rink), have it be LSSU, MTU, NMU and a fourth team that is different every year and make it the UPI: Upper Peninsula Invitational.

You don't get to make any decisions on the GLI anymore. In fact, anything your fan base thinks should happen will be best if the complete opposite is what ends up as reality. Enjoy your time off over the holidays.

I never got to make any decisions because I am a fan. What a ridiculous post to make on a fan message board.

We will need the time off because we actually have talented players unlike yours and others.

enjoy the junior varsity GLI. Minor league venue for a minor league tournament.

I don't want to get in a pissing match with you because I'm sure you're a good guy, but I don't think those statements are fair. Sure, Michigan is loaded with NHL draft picks, but two of the teams in the upcoming GLI are teams Michigan failed to beat at home, including the team they famously refused to play.

Also Van Andel Arena may be home to a minor league team, but it's a top class venue. Smaller yes, but it still seats 11,000, is nicer than the Joe ever was, and good enough for The Who, Elton John, Metallica, etc. On the ice it will feel plenty legit to the players and won't take as many fans to be near capacity.

Finally, I think it's a little arrogant to call the tournament you've been part of for 50+ years "minor league" just because you're no longer a part of it.

As a proud Husky I hope the GLI can succeed. I would've loved to see it continue the way it used to be, including Michigan. But times change and hopefully the new situation works out best for everyone involved (or not involved in U of M's case).

The series since 2015 has MTU winning 3, Michigan winning 2 and 3 ties. The challenge with having multiple high draft choices are: 1. They are young. 2. They are not playing an individual sport.

So the blue and yellow have spent 50 years in a minor league event.

A tournament you couldn't win since 2015 and only played in the championship game once in that stretch. Looks like JV is too much to ask for your threadbare squad anyway.

At least now you don't have to get caught ducking out of a game when you lied about the reason.

I'm guessing this is probably why Michigan asked "what are we doing here?" in regard to losing guys to the WJC. With that said I remember BC playing in a couple GLIs and always thought that was cool no matter if they were missing 2-3 guys. David Quinn started "ditching" games during the WJC calendar at BU. It's very much a newer approach certain schools are taking.

I think we'd all agree the GLI was more fun/interesting when a top-tier team from out of state was the invitee. I hope they can get back to that. In fact, I wouldn't mind if WMU replaced UM as a perennial participant and the 4th team were a bigger school from an Eastern conference. That way you'd be guaranteed four different conference representatives, two D1 schools that are within an hour, and MTU which has a fan/alumni base that will travel nearly anywhere.

To your comment about this "newer approach," i know it makes sense for teams to do it, but do you think they should be able to? I would be in favor of a rule change (throughout all NCAA, not just hockey) making it a forfeit if a team can't/won't play a scheduled game.

I think you misunderstood me. The newer approach which I think Michigan is ultimately going to settle on is not scheduling games at all during the WJC.

Nothing has changed, not sure why this is such a big deal to people. Has the investigation been completed?

Offseason doldrums. It's pretty obvious that Mel is staying unless something wild comes back with that investigation.

Michigan Water Polo head coach Marcelo Leonardi who has made us the sole power in the Eastern United States in the sport was fired in an 8pm press release dump the other night. After talking with someone very connected to the program, it ain't pretty. His players hated him despite the success the team has enjoyed winning the conference championship each of the last 6 years.
