Why don't we go ahead and rename the WCHA the Butt Hurt Hockey Conference. I get people are upset, I would be too, but pointing fingers and whining really isn't going to change anything.
Agreed 100%. This is where all the butt hurt is coming from now!

Re: The "Super League" press conference is now live.

I'm getting so tired of explaining this. It's not about needing Gopher or Bucky or Sioux fans to "subsidize" us. It's about our own fans seeing a conference as big-time college sports, worth paying to see. The left-over WCHA is basically the Northern Sun with the addition of a couple of other D-II schools. If the fans don't support Northern Sun football and basketball, why would they support Northern Sun Hockey?

And don't tell me about increased chances of conference championships and NCAA berths. If the Gophers moved to the MAC, they'd increase their chance of conference championships too. Think Minnesota fans would buy that and still support the team at the same level? Would potential recruits buy it? Well, the leftover league is every bit as big of a step down from the old WCHA as it would be to go from the Big Ten to the MAC, maybe bigger.

The schools that have left us behind have EVERY RIGHT to act in what they see as their own interests. They don't owe us anything. Just don't tell us that we have no excuse if we fold up in the aftermath.

If this had all come about 2 or 3 years ago, there would be no interest in Duluth or UNO being part of that group.

You may have an excuse but the true blame will fall on the administration and fans of that school because they will be the ones who will have failed to support the program. I think that you sell both your fans and your program short. I bet all those BSU fans felt stupid for supporting their team when they were in the lowly and pitiful CHA and yet still made the F4 out in DC. Then again, I don't see any BSU fans whining that this is the end of the world, maybe because they have been through worse and they will support the program no matter what.

The BSU Beavers have tradition unmatched by many in D1 or D3. Mankato is still coming into their own and can flourish with the right type of attitude!

Oh, please. Go look at their attendance numbers in the statistics thread and tell me again about their tremendous fan support.

And I notice you completely avoided my comparison to Minnesota dropping to the MAC.

if you are looking for a fatty, no need to search any farther than your teams cheer-leading squad... you butt hurt is understandable but it will all be over for you in a few years. hang in there.

I don't buy MavsFan's assessment that our program is doomed. I was pretty ****ed off last week and was close to being in the same boat. The one thing I will say is that BSU is being held up as a shining example of what can happen if you just "work hard and keep your chin up", but just 2 years ago they were on the verge of shutting down their program. They weren't a healthy program even though they won conference championships and went to the F4. They were on the verge of being non-existent until they, get this, joined the WCHA! You can say that programs will be fine, and you'd probably be right. But to act like this is an opportunity to flourish and opens up a wide world of possibilities is flat out lying to yourself. The situation isn't going to change and it's not all that rosy. It doesn't mean we won't survive and it doesn't mean we won't be successful on the ice (and we will probably be MORE successful on the ice). That also doesn't mean it's going to be easier to compete for recruits, money, fan support, or anything else no matter how "committed" the administration, school and fans are.

Given that Bemidji proper has a population of ~15K, and BSU has a student population of ~5k, I'd say that they are doing just fine with their attendance. I don't know what you expect. They opened a new arena this year, so it wasn't just the move to the WCHA that increased attendance.

That's because I can't speak for what other fans would or would not do. Also, this isn't an equivalent situation because these 5 teams were not given the choice as to if they wanted to change or not. The fact that the school would chose to move to a less competitive situation would bother me, as opposed to being expelled from the current conference. In that case I'd support them all the more to show the other schools the mistake that they have made.

If I recall correctly, BSU sold out their old arena. Their attendence numbers were low due to a low capacity. In their new arena in 2010-2011 they averaged 2,303 fans, in an arena that seats 2,399. 96% attendance is pretty good. Bemidji's population in the 2010 census was 13,431, meaning over 17% of the town's population turned out for the average game. That's pretty impressive.

I didn't ask what YOU would do. I'm not sure I believe you, but that wasn't the question. The question is what would happen to attendance and recruiting if they went to the MAC (for whatever reason.) And if you don't think both would suffer, then I don't know what to tell you.

I do agree with you that support for Bemidji has been low and I don't see Bemidji as any more viable than Mankato or St. Cloud after the Big Ten Conference and National Collegiate Hockey Conference form.

However, the attendance numbers for the last ten years (as presented in my thread) that included Bemidji, had 9 years of the 2,400 seat John Glas Fieldhouse and CHA quality teams factored in. According to USCHO.com, Bemidji averaged 3,876 fans in year 1 of the WCHA for 88.2% occupancy. Now its obviously like the situation at the Xcel was with the Wild or is now with the Twins at Target Field; people will come no matter how bad the team is to see the new rink. Also, Bemidji hosted the Sioux and Gophers, which always boost attendance, since these fan bases travel well. However even with the novelty of a new arena and good visiting bases, its clear that the days of 1,400 fans a game are over.

I've seen three figures on Sanford Center. One says 4,245 seats, one says 4,373 seats, and one says 4,700 seats. It's definitely not 2,399 seats. The 2,399 figure was for the Fieldhouse and given they were getting about 1,400 fans a game at that facility, it comes to about 60% occupancy. So it wasn't full

There are people who get things done when the going gets tough and there are others who just sit around and complain.

Mavs fans, alumni, athletic department, students, coaches, community leaders, businesses, parents and administration need to roll up their sleeves and get to work.

Start blogs, Facebook pages, sell advertising, recruit like crazy, lower ticket prices, build the student section, ramp up the pep band and if you need more ideas.....

The same? No. But I don't think you can say he wouldn't have had success there. The Ralph has been a big reason why UND has had the success it has recently, but this program, it's tradition, and it wide support have been built up over decades of commitment to a successful program. UND wouldn't even have The Ralph (of which we have yet to raise a NC banner, FYI) if it weren't for the handwork and dedication put in by the previous administrations, players, and coaches of the past at the Old Barn, and The first Ralph Engelstad Arena. UND has EARNED everything they've been given in college hockey...donated or not.

Why don't we go ahead and rename the WCHA the Butt Hurt Hockey Conference. I get people are upset, I would be too, but pointing fingers and whining really isn't going to change anything.

They earned Englestad's money the same way Oklahoma State earned T. Boone Pickens, Oregon earned Phil Knight's and Penn State earned Terry Pegula's.

Just once, I'd like to go to a game in Colorado (probably never will again) where I actually saw a student section of some value...
