The States : red states in a race to the bottom

Here is a gauge on that river near Kerrville. Not sure how close to the campsite it is. https://water.noaa.gov/gauges/KRRT2

It appears that this is the third highest crest of all time. The only two that beat it were in 1932 and 1987. At 34+ feet it was nearly double the prior third highest crest.

I don't know the history of this camp, or how long it's been there, etc... You would hope that someone might have remembered 1987? But who knows.
 
Bottom line is the people that live there understand the risk, or purposely ignored the risk. And the cost of that was their children. Not a risk I would be willing to make.

What pisses me off is we always have the money for the aftermath, we never have the money for the ounce of prevention.

COMMISSIONER BALDWIN: You know we had a baby flood a couple weeks ago, a month or so, whatever it was. And I keep hearing these reports of the old, old system, and I know we're not going to deal with that though. Expect that to be gone where the Jones call the Smiths, and the Smiths call Camp Rio Vista, and Rio Vista blah, blah, blah, along down the line. But it's still there and it still works. The thought of our beautiful Kerr County having these damn sirens going off in the middle of night, I'm going to have to start drinking again to put up with y'all.

Oh no, a siren might wake me up at 2am (you know, something it's supposed to do in an emergency situation). What a fucking toolbag.

I read it. In the study itself it talked about what the Sheriff talked about at the meetings. For places like the RV parks and camps, the key is direct notification of a contact person. Realistically, that is the only thing that is effective. We receive or hear the EAS warnings all the time about flood possibilities, but when law enforcement comes by and tells you it's time to evacuate, it's time to hit the road.

But the sheriff is also correct in that people make their own decisions, and a lot of them are going to incorrectly decide to ride things out.

The democrats blow most at the skill that gets you elected in 21st century in a lot of parts of America. For the most part they don't even try. But there is anecdotal evidence that even this might not be sufficient to get democrats elected; For an example I give you congressman Tim Ryan of Ohio.

He made attempts to speak to people "where they were" when he ran for Rob Portman's seat in the senate when Portman was tucking his tail between his legs and running from a trump primary challenge. Ryan didn't talk down to voters and he sounded like a lot of Ohians. He went far enough in fact that those on the far left then accused his campaign of driving an anti-Asian narrative, because in promises to bring factory jobs back to Ohio he also told of working with trump to keep the Chinese from stealing jobs from hard-working Americans.

It didn't matter. Someone else was on his knees blowing donald trump, and Ryan had a "D" next to his name, so his loss was a foregone conlclusion.

With everything I have seen in this country this century, and especially over the last decade, its obvious to me there are no political solutions to our problems.
