The States : red states in a race to the bottom

I won't lie...I kind of laughed at the idea and if those counties wanted to leave I would let them. They wouldn't just like all those areas near NoDak didn't leave either.

I like the premise though...Minnesota Counties will leave because we pay for stuff (while having a budget surplus) and Iowa pays for nothing with their budget surplus. I will take our infrastructure all day long over Iowa's.

Same reason we'll never see the State of Superior, despite it being legally feasible for the UP to actually secede from Michigan and form another state due to the lack of geographical connection between the Upper & Lower Peninsulas. Plus they'd still have to get 3/4 of the current states to ratify their admission to the Union as a state, so even setting aside the economic implications, good luck with that.

This. 30% of the land, 3% of the population. If the Yoopers think their roads are sh*t now and they don't get representation from Lansing now, they sure as Hell wouldn't have the money to maintain the State of Superior.

Illinois is going through it as well with the southern portion of ths state p*ssed they have to share it with "Chit-cago" but don't realize that seven counties financially support the rest of the f*cking state.

Christ, the outcome from GW's "No Child Left Behind" has been disastrous.

It’s a near universal thing. Eastern Washington and Eastern Oregon hate having to share with Seattle and Portland. Heck, we even have it in Alaska, “Anchorage is not part of the ‘real Alaska’”.

It’s common Republican tactic to “other” the urban areas.

Yep. Several of the Northeast counties in Colorado voted to secede from Colorado a few years ago.

The common people have NO idea how things work or where the money for things like roads, parks, police/fire, etc. actually comes from.

I've long said that we should craft something for the "taxation is theft" people: If you don't want to pay taxes, fine. You don't have to. You just have to forfeit your driver's license and ability to drive. And penalize the hell out of driving w/o a license. (I know this is all fantasy, but I think it would be a fun social experiment with several "Oh shit! I may have messed up with my choices" moments as reality played out).

Greater Idaho is a real idea and most of the Oregon counties involved have voted for it.

The hilarious bit is that reportedly Idaho itself doesn’t want to take on the dead weight.

My favorite FAFO story is from 2010 where a rural Tennessee fire department sat and watched a house burn because the homeowner "forgot" to pay a $75/year fire service tax. They did however put a neighbor's fire out that was sparked by the initial blaze because the neighbor did pay the fee.

I feel like it’s part of the old stereotypes that are proven to not be true but idiots still bsabsvr:

rurals are better people and don’t need the urban centers
trickle down economics works
republicans are fiscally conservative

I mean all you to see to prove this is true is the reaction to the wildfires. I swear half this country think water appears in hydrants naturally and dont understand how it is not an unending supply.

We should tell these people it is a good idea to drink seawater and watch from a distance ;)

How about we tell them to take ivermectin or bleach? Wait, already been tried, sorry. Sheesh, embarrassing.

I was there last year...and I saw almost no goth people. Lesbians yes obviously but I think this is a case of reddit overinflating a situation. Some of the comments are fun though
Well it’s because their habitat is being threatened, Techbros are an invasive species. Hopefully Amazon’s full return to work will mitigate these effects.
