The States: Maybe A National Divorce Is A Good Idea After All

All the comments of this are disgusting.

Some are not grounded in reality. The Royals make f-ckloads of money for Great Britain, and they cost the average British taxpayer a couple dollars per year (whatever the British equivalent is). So, they generate way more money than they take. The British still apparently love them, although it appears the younger generations are losing interest.
I like the monarchy, and I think Britain benefits from having it. I was sad when the Queen died. Like I said in another post after her death, I likely would have been a Tory during the Revolutionary War.
That all said, it’s obvious the Brits are just as racist as Americans, if not worse. Meghan Markle is just one example, IMO. I’m sure there are others, and I’m not a cultured world traveler at this point in my life, so I’ll take other posters’ words for other countries.

On the Meghan Markle situation, it’s just a mess from everyone.

Yeah Harry is an attention seeking, privileged doosh. But, he’s also probably dealing with a ton of issues like PTSD from his Mom’s death, his f- up family and his time in Afghanistan. It doesn’t excuse anything but it’s still there.

Same thing with Meghan. Yeah, she’s an attention seeking doosh. But, a lot of the press has some seriously racist and anti-American attitudes.

The tabloids and press are different than the people, I think. Daily fail and others are horrific- just like fox is here.

I didn’t come across anyone outside of northern England under the age of 60 who read those. And some people just wanna look at the boobs inside

I don’t think they are worse than Americans, but I only lived there. Shrug.

Like I said, I’ll take your word for it. People can overcome sh-tty tabloids, especially wealthy ones like Meghan and Harry. Being imprisoned in concentration camps like the Uyghurs in China would be harder to overcome. There’s different degrees of racism, and I am only fully aware of the American version.

What shocked me the most living there was the classism.

bootstraps, American dream, blah blah that we grew up on here. Then you go there and rich people are looked down on if they are new money. The aristocracy and their rules- shudder.
again, I don’t feel bad for royals, but I was living there when Kate Middleton was getting out through the wringer for having parents that had jobs. Dad pilot, mom stewardess and the “doors to manual” jokes shocked me, esp when you realize her parents have owned a business and we’re millionaires from that

It's not the taxes that are the issue...dont the Royals own like a ridiculous amount of land which is where most of their wealth is now? I think Jon Oliver did a story on it recently and how it hurts the British economy. (I may be wrong)

They do own a bunch of land, but they have a metric sh**tonne of stock. Along with that, they have a special loophole in stockholder disclosure laws (something Oliver mentioned).

Land barony was the basis for the entire British peerage, and also the reason the lower peerages (basically everything below Duke/Duchess) no longer have the wealth that they once did. The Industrial Revolution encouraged peasants to give up tenant farming and move to the cities for factory jobs, leaving the peerage with a dwindling primary source of income. Then WWI debts forced necessary taxation on the landed classes, which combined with the loss of income, generally required them to sell off parcels to pay said taxes and keep up with the bloated expenses of their manor houses and all their servants. Sometimes they made terrible investments in scam projects and Ponzi schemes, because they were desperate and had no knowledge of modern capitalism, which made them easy prey. Eventually, most of them were forced to sell everything and downsize. Downtown Abbey worked a lot of those issues into its plot.

I believe the king or queen also has some inheritance exemption- which is why the monarch wills everything to the new monarch, preventing the fortune being diluted through divorces

I an rather anti-monarchy, but my largest objections were simply saying that Megan shouldn't be brought into that family. Replace the word Megan with black, gay, transgender and it is some of the most vile bullsh1it. It hit too close to home.

My issue is with her husband primarily, and it had nothing to do with race- more so that they both seemed upset about not being higher in pecking order. If I came across as saying it was because she was black, Yeesh and mea culpa

It is just a message board, and I don't need to go back into the thread to find who wrote what. I also know that the regulars that post here likely don't intend what was written in a racist light. Just set me off when I saw someone writing to the point of not bringing home someone you love because of their family or what others might think. I know what it feels like having someone you love be rejected by your family for who they are, and I can only imagine doing it in public. I don't know much at all about Harry and Megan, but I can relate to that, and it is fucking gross. /end

If you care enough about the monarchy to closely follow it (which is fine by me, I don't) I find it incredulous that any royal would be criticized for supposedly being entitled. Good Lord it's practically in the job description. Unless they're a complete shitbag (I think one of them was basically kicked out right?) I can't imagine that being bothersome. But that's just me. : )

I don’t pay attention to celebrity stuff or reality tv so sometimes it’s nice to take a break from climate change and women’s bodily rights to snark on something that’s not important :)(insert smiley face)
