The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

I'm a decade removed from it, but there has been a swing starting in the early 2000's in the rural areas from "It couldn't be more blue if the Smurf's lived here" to Republican red. Growing up, the ballot for local elections used to read like this:

County Commissioner
Democrat
( ) Joe Schmoe (D)
( ) Al Whoever (D)
( ) Some Other Guy (D)
( ) Another New Guy (D)

Republican
( ) [Blank]

Swear to god. The Republican side would be blank half the time. If you wanted to actually oppose anyone, some Democrats would be RINOs just to get elected.

Where I grew up our local ballots looked like this:

County Commissioner
Democrat
( ) Irving Incumbent
( ) Bored Rich Dipsh-t

Republican
( ) Irving Incumbent
( ) Land Developer Trying to Rewrite Zoning Laws

Liberal
( ) Irving Incumbent
( ) Art Professor with Live-in Underage Girlfriend

Conservative
( ) Irving Incumbent
( ) Lady Who Screams About the UN at Town Meetings

Right-to-Life
( ) Angry Old Guy with John Brown Beard and One Hundred Bumper Stickers About Satan

The paper would publish Irving Incumbent's votes broken down by party and the party officials would actually take credit for it if they "won."

For one day at least, GA > NC.

The hateful syphilitic rednecks who vote the state leg in will of course be out in force and probably pick the next governor, but it is heartening to see there is at least one Republican who will still stand firm for his party's singular traditional principle: money talks.

I really expected him to use the pocket veto, then come out stating that while he's in favor of religious expression, yada, yada... he's concerned about how this law could be used to abuse some minorities amongst them and the pressure of businesses that could cost Georgia its jobs. Never did I expect a signed veto.

I assume this is his way of showing the CoC he's one of the "good ones," and there will be a cushy "economic liaison" position for him when his baby kissing days are over.

Or he might have a streak of humanity in him.

There is no pocket veto in Georgia, at least according to the one story I read. If he chose to do nothing, it became law.

Well, in that case he did exactly what would be expected of him by any sane bystander.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Is that the deal? I don't get how MI can elect Rs -- makes no sense to me. Is the state D party just all messed up?

..they ended up with Geoffrey Feiger on the (D) ballot for governor once. They have no idea of what they're doing.

Happy eighth month anniversary to the end of the Illinois Fiscal Year 2015 Operating Budget!

Currently, there STILL isn't a 2016 budget in place, and the 2017 FY Budget is drafted and ready for approval!

I had never even heard of the site at the center of that story until you posted that Kos link. And it's considered a top 100 visited site.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

I gotta think that people in NC are getting annoyed that every day some new group or celebrity is telling them they are out if they dont repeal the stupid law. (same with Georgia which is risking Warner Brothers and Disney never going back there) I realize old crusty white dudes are afraid that the guy ****ing next to them may be a chick (well some...many probably would like that if said person was young enough) but these laws are ridiculous.

More pull outs than a bible study retreat.

Georgia's governor vetoed the "religious freedom" bill placed before him. He saw the dollar signs on the table and didn't want to risk his state's economy.

Smart man! North Carolina better hope the rapture comes soon (and that God hates Fags!!1!!) or they will be another Mississippi within days. The money lost already is insane and if that numbnuts stays silent much longer it will only get worse.

North Carolina was moving to a state I would like to move to status a few years ago. Now it's turning into Mississippi.
