The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

No link handy, but a "bathroom bill" has been introduced here in MI as well.
I'm kind of surprised our Republican led Legislature hasn't introduced one here. Granted our budget crisis may be preventing that...

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

North Carolina was moving to a state I would like to move to status a few years ago. Now it's turning into Mississippi.

It's still only a matter of time. Everybody in RTP is from NYC or Boston, and NC's WAR (wackjobs above replacement) has been negative for a decade. Not to mention that NC has big Latino immigration. This is the last hurrah of the creeps.

Sorry, not buying. They're not dying off, they're still here.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Yeah I don't buy the die off theory, at least in the south. People there are still bitter about the Civil War ffs.

But in the 60s that was 90% of whites and today it's 60%. Even fundies can't breed fast enough to stop the bleed-out.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Except remember, things are so crappy the smart people are leaving so the fundies are all that is left.

I haven't been there since '97 so I don't know about that. VA went through this in the early 00s with the bigots using the legislative process to try to enshrine their thunder god nonsense in the state constitution. The smart people didn't leave, they fought and won. NC is about a decade behind VA, but I think it will get there.

We're draining the cesspool. It won't happen overnight but the Iron Age Reservation gets smaller every year. And really we don't have to wipe it out completely. Just make it small enough that it has zero influence on the federal level and can't damage the civilized states. MS and AL can keep on channeling the Christian Taliban until the end of time for all I care, as long as they can't affect anybody outside their respective sh-tholes.

Illinois lawmakers, who are cruising towards their 10th month with no State budget, are now proposing to tax Illinois residents for the miles they drive each year in lieu of the state gas tax.

The proposal says Illinois residents could pay a flat 1.5 cents per mile on an estimated 30,000 miles a year ($450/yr), or can pay less (or more) by having their odometer readings logged, or can opt into a GPS tracking program to ensure out of state mileage is not taxed.

All in an effort to recoup lost gas tax income from more environmentally friendly gas engines and electric vehicles.

I believe other states are contemplating the same thing. It is definitely outside the box thinking.

In other news, California has granted parole to Leslie Van Houton, she of Charles Manson fame.

It's not an inherently bad idea. Electric and hybrid vehicles still use roads and bridges. They gotta be paid for somehow.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

It's a terrible idea. Just keep raising the gas tax until there's enough market demand that real public transportation gets built.

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Or how about stop giving god**** incentives for hybrids and electrics? Instead of paying out, how about, you know, not pay out?

Re: The States: Mad Scientist Laboratories of Democracy

Besides, that tracking garbage would be so complicated that it will cost a fortune to administer.

Nah. Every time I go to the emissions or inspection station, they record the mileage. They then send me the bill. If I sell the car in the interim, the mileage is recorded on the title. They send me the bill.

We don't have annual vehicle inspections here. In order to implement such a tax here the state would need to spend quite a lot of money. And it would infuriate the populace here because it would be a new time burden as well as financial burden.
