Snopes already addressed this. Other states had similar findings that turnout out almost no election improprieties.

But the effect is: huge headlines or lead stories that hammer the idea into people's heads. Then a small retraction and then quickly moving on to the Next Atrocity.

That's how Fox viewers stay loyal even though 85% of their stories are eventually exposed as lies. The initial impact that flatters their prejudice is what sticks.

Before 1980, probably not -- VA was super racist until New Yorkers started moving into Fairfax. But Northam is a little young for it. He may be the last one.
