The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

I can't say I've seen a lick of outrage over a costume of a black celeb. Do you have any sources for that? The only outrage I've seen is over costumes that include blackface.

You would be suspended from school (it is what brought about the conversation amongst 4 teachers) without much recourse (even at my college) and scanning Twitter:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-cards="hidden" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Photo resurfaces of Joy Behar in blackface for "beautiful African woman" Halloween costume <a href="https://t.co/zxBlV39oBL">https://t.co/zxBlV39oBL</a> <a href="https://t.co/mA1OIuWjj2">pic.twitter.com/mA1OIuWjj2</a></p>— The Hill (@thehill) <a href="https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1093540913413058564?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">February 7, 2019</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

That isnt going over very well right now.

Its a very weird subject because I am not sure what the right answer is. I kinda flip flop. On one hand I agree with Scooby that having the other extreme will help us find the middle but at the same time I know that can mean some innocent people get burned in the process which really chaps my ***. (and does more harm than good)

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

As Trevor Noah pointed out, he had the glove, the red jacket, and was doing the moonwalk; at that point we get it, you're Michael Jackson, you reaaaaaally don't need the blackface.

Someone somewhere pointed out the Wayans brothers in White Girls as a retort. First off, that was supposed to be ridiculous crap. Second off, yes, African-Americans can do whiteface, but white people cannot do blackface. Yes, I suppose it's a double standard. Get used to it. If you're life was so dependent on getting to do blackface that no being able to is the worst thing that can happen to you, a) you have weird priorities and b) you're lucky to not have more pressing worries.

This. I used to be of the opinion that white face wasn't acceptable if black face wasn't. Then I actually took time to understand the history of it. It's hard to reconcile in the brain, but if you think about it and listen to why it's offensive, it becomes a lot easier.

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

Given the history of blackface, white people probably shouldn't be painting their face black for Halloween costumes. Obviously there's a difference between doing it as part of a costume and doing a minstrel show but it's still not in particularly good taste either. The reaction of most black people who see it would probably vary from really ******ed off to rolling their eyes (probably more on the latter end but I can't speak for their reaction obviously).

As far as Republicans being outraged about it... they really don't have a leg to stand on during the Trump era (or even before it really).

It is definitely in bad taste...I cringe thinking about it. Personally I would never do it but the weird thing is it wasnt that long ago that white actors were doing Blackface in movies (see: Soul Man) or playing other POC as well and we all accepted it. (see: Short Circuit for example) That doesnt make it right but it probably makes it easier for me to accept ya know?

Going forward though there can be no denying it just isnt the right thing to do and the GOP has no right to even discuss it let alone be outraged over it.

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

Technically I guess you could make that argument (same with white people using the N word) but there's a historical context and reasoning there.

Of course there's the historical context and so forth, my message was more for the people (elsewhere in the world, not here) who won't listen to the context and need to cut right to the quick.

I would have never even thought to complain about White Chicks...that would never offend me. (outside of the fact that someone paid money to make that crap ;) )

Trevor Noah makes a great point!

It's not the we can't do blackface. It's that we can't do blackface and then dictate how people should take it. Blackface has baggage that is outside our control. We don't get to judge whether people are over-reacting to it or misconstruing it.

If you're a firefighter that baggage might cause you to lose friends. If you're an entertainer it might cause you to lose gigs. If you're a governor, it might end your political career. In each case, it's not up to us what happens -- it's how the circle of people affected responds.

No I know, I get what you're saying and I agree I just spelled it out further.

Another fair point! Great discussion guys!

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

My thoughts on VA:

1) Northam's problem is both credibility AND apparently making light of the KKK's treatment of blacks. First he apologizes, then says it not him but he's done blackface before. My answer to that is 1) then somebody else had better cop to being the people in that picture, and 2) also explain how it made its way to his yearbook page. I'm not expecting a good answer here, but if the dude needs to take a week to sort all that out, so be it.

2) Fairfax has a lot bigger problem. We aren't actually going to know what happened in that hotel room and I'm inclined to believe the woman. But, somebody is lying about the aftermath. She said that she avoided Fairfax afterwards and had no contact with him for 15 years until she saw that he was running for VA LG in 2017. He says they interacted a bunch of times in the ensuing days and years after that. They can't both be right on that and it should be provable.

3) The Herring thing is ridiculous. An 18 year old dressed up like a black singer with makeup 40 years ago and we're going to ruin his career over that? Give me a fuking break. I'm not telling people to not be offended by that as the guy has already acknowledged but c'mon already. If we start using that as a standard for throwing people over instead of viewing the man's entire career to put a teenage incident in context what do you think the Republicans are going to do going forward? Everybody who ever told a bad joke as a 14 year old will be forced to resign 50 years later after GOP aligned Russian trolls dig up dirt on them. The punishment has to fit the crime here and asking Herring to resign over this is insane IMHO.

"... inclined ..."?

Dr. C.B. Ford on line one for you, 'dog. :)

What's best about this?
Fairfax has retained Kavanaugh's counsel; Dr. Vanessa C. Tyson, a professor at Scripps College in California*, the accuser, has retained Dr. C.B. Ford's* counsel. Are we sure Scott Adams isn't right and we're all just being punked in a giant simulation?

*A PhD prof at a CA college no less.

Yes, since I wasn't actually there I'm not sure how else to phrase that. One thing about predators is they don't stop at one. If Fairfax has a pattern we'll be hearing about it soon enough.

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

Yeah, I mean, it's not like the whole point of his character was making fun of blackface.

People ban Huckleberry Finn because it has the n word in it. Same deal.

The tragedy of the world isn't blacks having to put up with whites or even women having to put up with men.

It's smarties having to put up with dummies. Now that's oppression.
