The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

Here it starts.

Smartly, Minnesota has a surplus and a rainy day fund.

Smartly, our governor wants to raise the gas tax, raise taxes, etc. so he can do things.

And there's the Republicans saying they won't allow it unless the surplus and rainy day fund is gone, kaput, vamoosh.

Folks, it's still good right now. Now's the time to do this ****. When the recession hits you're going to want a tax cut and you're going to want your state to be solvent.

I'm a little surprised he picked the revenue sources that he did. The gas tax and car registration and licensing taxes are all pretty regressive. Healthcare provider taxes are going to get passed on to people getting medical help, as if medical care were not expensive enough. I'll be a little surprised if the DFL doesn't tweak that a bit. Maybe there are studies out there showing the gas taxes and car registration taxes aren't regressive, but they sure seem so to me.

The gas tax is targeted because of higher fuel efficiency standards, hybrids, and electric cars. The tax is taking in less money at its current rate, and so they want to increase that revenue stream. There's no arguing that the tax isn't regressive, but either the governor doesn't care or he's been told to ignore that as raising the price of gas does reduce its use (highly inelastic demand, but it's still responsive to price at some level).

(RALEIGH, N.C.) — North Carolina’s elections board has ordered a new election in the nation’s last undecided congressional race after reviewing evidence that it was tainted by absentee ballot fraud.

The North Carolina State Board of Elections voted 5-0 on Thursday to hold a new election in the 9th Congressional District. The board did not immediately set a schedule.

They should make the NC GOP pay for it. And they should bar anybody who was part of the NC GOP from participating in any way. Crime doesn't pay unless you're incorporated.

**** that, you don't get a redo when you cheat. You lose. You get nothing. Good day sir.

Re: The States: At Least Michigan is Better Than Indiana

Lemme guess. Draggin' gays from your pick up isn't a hate crime, it's just good sensible Christianity?

Nope, that's still illegal. The language, as I understand it, states that a judge can take racism, homo/transphobia, misogyny, into account on sentencing, but it's not part of the initial charging of the crime(people like unofan can correct me if I am wrong).

It's better than what we currently have (nothing), but it's still too watered down.

Tommy Chong has been fighting prostate and then colorectal cancer for 7 freaking years and he's still with us. Turned 80 last year. God bless him.

He must be like Mr. Burns on the Simpsons, where every disease known to mankind was trying to kill him including 5 that doctors had never heard of before, but since they were all infecting him at once they cancelled each other out.
