The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Interesting watching Fayne and Taormina playing for the Devils.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Back to the HE schedule tonight finally, 2pts. is crucial to start the second half. Would love to see them in position for home ice heading into February. That would be a great motivator one would think.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

The lineups are out for tonight and Shane Luke is making his debut centering the fourth line. I've been wondering when this kid was going to get in a game. He had some great scoring numbers in juniors. Should be an interesting night.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Not many folks at last night's game. 4-4 tie. Could have been better yet could have been worse. Friars got out early with a shorthanded goal, eventually fell behind 2-1, tied it up, fell behind, tied it up and with around 1:30 to go in the game took a 4-3 lead. Couldn't hold on as UMASS scored with their goalie pulled with 39 secs. to go. Schaller had a chance to ice it with the open net on a break out but good play by UMASS player to tip puck from him on a shot at the open goal.

Luke got his first assist.

Friars did not play an overall very good game. Passing was off, trouble getting pucks out of the zone or clearing the front of the net. Defense was not all that good in this one. Still a point is a point.

Going to need to improve for UNH on Wednesday.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Shane Luke is centering the top line, Schaller is out. Also Roo Adams is out and Craig Wysermirski is on the 3rd D pair.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Listened to the game last night and the Friars just never seemed to get into it. Will be tough without Schaller. This Sunday's game will be difficult as the Gut is always tough to play in and the Friars always seem to struggle in Sunday afternoon games.

Some good news for the future, 4 future Friars were ranked in the latest NHL draft scouting report - Jankowski, Dejersey, Abramson, and Parisi.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Was at the UNH game last night. PC played better than against UMass last week, against which it was really outplayed by the Minutemen in both of their games this year. Could have gone either way against UNH as some shots just missed their mark wide, but its tough to get a shut out posted by a freshman gaolie (his first). Crowds have been abysmal. It must be depressing for the Friars see nothing but empty seats when they skate out. Even with the kids out, the program should draw more fans to the games. I'm not blaming the school, but this area is not the "hockey town" it sometimes makes itself out to be.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Thanks for the game perspective Dillon. As far as the crowd, the trouble is the program had hit rock bottom over the last few years. It takes time to rekindle interest. If they keep playing strong and winning their fair share, people will come. Rhode Islanders, like most places, really follow winners.

I found this pretty funny. Is there another Providence College with a Shneider Arena and amazing fans that I don't know about?

"Schneider Arena is home to Providence College. Ever since the Friars downed the University of Pennsylvania in the arena's first game in 1973, the fan base has continued to grow, with students and alumni consistently supporting the team."

I have to believe the author has never attended a college hockey game - anywhere.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Friars get the win at Vermont today 5-2 to finally win a HE game after the first of the year.

2 by Army and 2 by Mauerman and Beaudry big in net at the end.

Weekend series with the Terriers up next. Friday's game is on NESN from J. Parker Arena. Saturday's game at Schneider up against the Bball team playing at the Dunk.

Just back from chilly Burlington...a solid road win for the Friars. Derek Army and Ross Mauermann each scored twice while Andy Balysky scored the other goal. The Friars killed 8 of 9 Vermont power plays and collected their 8th short-handed goal of the year, which ties Bu for the most in the nation. Mauermann scored the short-handed goal, which was his 3rd of the year, tying him for second most in the nation. Alex Beaudry was sharp in net coming up with 29 saves including several big ones down the stretch.

The win was the Friars first @ Vermont since 12-1-2007 and gives PC their first season sweep of the Catamounts since they joined Hockey East in 2005-06

The Friars are now in 5th place in Hockey East just one point behind Maine. The play a home and home series against red hot BU this weekend.

Re: The rebirth of Providence College Hockey

Great win and they needed it, now on to BU and at least a split....nice feeling talking about wins in January and Maine has back to backs at BC this weekend so things could change
