Re: The PPACA Thread Part V: Doctor! Doctor! Give me the news!

It should be today's Editorial in WaPo concerning health insurance industry concerns that the GOP and Trump tactics are going to drive costs through the roof. I can't verify that though because I've exceeded my monthly free use. If it's the wrong link I apologize.

The article is dated May 26, 2017 from what I can tell. The headline is "Trump’s latest tantrum will hurt hundreds of thousands of people. Here’s how."

Yep, that's it. It's old

Re: The PPACA Thread Part V: Doctor! Doctor! Give me the news!

I don't know what he's supposed to do. He's got a party that 60 times made a promise they knew they couldn't keep, just because it played well on the idiot shows, and then the worst possible thing on earth happened: they swept the entire government.

The only way this is doable is if either (1) the moderates shut up and allow 30 million people -- mostly their own base -- to lose their health care, or (2) the radicals shut up and stop pretending that all the redmeat bullsh-t the GOP cynically campaigned on for the last decade is actually something real. Good luck on the first: they're careerists. Good luck on the second: they're too stupid to know.

No SML could have pulled this off without splitting the party in two unless he was willing to walk into the WH on January 21 and say, "Sir -- we will never bring repeal to a vote, it's a trap," and then convince the President he can have nearly everything under the sun but he can't repeal ACA.

I think he screwed this up. He could have told a few of the nutters to block consideration of the bill, and then nobody would have blamed him for not getting loons like Rand Paul on board coupled with Collins who was never going to vote in favor. Now you put Heller and Flake in 2018 as well as Gardner in 2020 in a tough spot, one they could have avoided altogether.

Problem now is 2 Senators are voting against every proposal (Collins and Murkowski). That means Itch needs something that appeals to every single other Senator.

CBO just scored the “skinny repeal” bill. 16M Americans would lose insurance + 20% spike in premiums, per senior Dem aide

Chuck Todd reporting that Donald is using interior sec to threaten murkowski- saying Alaskas future in the administration is in jeopardy.

And yet I hear obama was the great divider!

LBJ closed military bases in states that voted for Goldwater. It appears that tD could be following "You play ball with the president or get the bat up your a_s" management style.

Say that's true, but this is an apples to oranges comparison because Trump is threating a reliably red state!

Re: The PPACA Thread Part V: Doctor! Doctor! Give me the news!

Yeah Quid Pro Quo is one thing...but to declare war on a state that loves Sarah Palin is a stupid choice for a Republican.

And not just because of it being Alaska but now every Red State is at risk of going rogue. If Trump will screw over Alaska he will screw over anyone and since he isnt loyal they wont feel the need to either.

When that Impeachment trail comes around in the Senate, I guess we can count on one GOP vote to convict now! ;)

I doubt Red States would vote for a Dem anyway. Even if it's Orange Hair running again. But Purple States would get lost in a hurry.

Vote for a Dem no. But the Senators will have no problem not supporting something Trump does if they arent up for re-election.

See Trump assumes by doing stuff like this guys like Heller will fall in line because he fears reprisal and fears what people in Nevada will do in 2018. Heller is more likely to disavow Donald now because Nevada needs Medicaid anyways. This whole thing is just stupid.

While I'm sure there are lots of examples of presidents being vindictive, that one sounds like a Birchers' gripe. Source?

And for that matter... in all the examples of presidents being vindictive, that would be WRONG. Does right and wrong no longer function when there's precedent? "Adolf, you really shouldn't murder the Jews." "Oh, please, tell it to the Armenians."

Well, let's see what kind of spine Lisa has. Reading this article she seems to still have it:
"I base my votes on what I believe is in Alaska's best interest," she said. "So I know that there are those who wish that I would be more in line with following the party platform, but I don't think it should come as any surprise that there have been occasions that I have not followed the lead of the party."
...
"We're here to govern. We're here to legislate. We're here to represent the people who sent us here. And so every day shouldn't be about campaigning. Every day shouldn't be about winning elections. How about just doing a little bit of governing around here? That's what I'm here for," she said.
It's an interesting stand for someone who a) has 5 years until reelection and b) has zero shot at the Republican Presidential nomination (she's "pro-choice"). I've long said she's better off ditching the R and going Independent.

Didn't she do that once after she lost a primary?

Re: The PPACA Thread Part V: Doctor! Doctor! Give me the news!

Nope, she ran a write-in campaign. She's never dropped her party affiliation.

I thought the AK (AS? AA? Whatever.) GOP was actually very independent of the RNC, what with their quasi white nationalist AIP overtones and their libertarian cross-dressing.

For the yokel voters a national party scolding you is comedy gold for a GOP rep who can then tub thump that they're an "independent voice" and a "maverick" and all that parochial Smallville Pride BS.

Haha no, the Alaska GOP is just like every other GOP. Our other Senator from Ohio falls straight in line and Don Young usually does too. At the state level it's standard bread and butter GOP tactics: huge breaks for the rich (i.e. the oil companies), **** the poors, **** women, and lock up the browns (which is Alaska Natives here). Our state is completely ****ed financially because of the GOP.

PS, AK = Alaska, AS = Alaska Airlines, AA = American Airlines or Alcoholics Anonymous depending on your alcohol intake.
