The Power of the SCOTUS VIII - I am certiorari we'll be arguing until Thanksgiving

Re: The Power of the SCOTUS VIII - I am certiorari we'll be arguing until Thanksgivin

Advertising is dead this cycle. Bush has more money than anyone to spend and he's moved the needle zero with tons of advertising.

That doesn't mean ads are dead. It means ads for a dead candidacy are dead.

Re: The Power of the SCOTUS VIII - I am certiorari we'll be arguing until Thanksgivin

Yeah, ok, just watch.

Problem is we may never see a good test case again. You would need a race where there was no movement and then only one side injected a ton of ads, after which there was decisive movement (and even that would be merely correlation unless voters actually cited the ads in polling). But now there's so much money sloshing around buys are just nullified with counter buys, and everybody's got a professional campaign staff so buys start practically the day you announce.

We would need a standoff situation where one candidate just flat ran out of money with time to go in the race, but nothing else happened at the same time that could materially affect the outcome. Then you'd see whether it was like a tug of war where the fat kid fell off one side.

My God, what a great scam for the networks. It is exactly like supplying both sides of a conflict with weapons.

The candidates have to figure out that they are in the prisoners' dilemma.

Nice little article in today's WaPo on why Justice Scalia mattered.

Between your obsession with Pat Robertson and partisan tripe like this, your taste in political pieces is on par with Kepler's taste in television.

It's not an article, it's an opinion piece, and it's nonsense.

In what ways, pray tell, is an "opinion piece" not an article? ("piece of writing in a newspaper or magazine")

Everyone wants congress to change - EXCEPT FOR THEIR OWN REP AND SEN.

:p

Peters is an OK guy. Stabby has done her time, and probably should retire next cycle. Mike Bishop is the kind of Orange-Glo faced backbencher who shouldn't be in Washington, but is otherwise relatively quiet and tolerable considering I didn't vote for him. Plus, his in-state residence is less than a mile from my house, so I always feel like I could stage a protest in front of his house if I wanted to. :p

Oh heck no. I'd love to get rid of my entire congressional delegation.

Talked with my dad after soccer tonight. Even he's a bit sad about Scalia. And I'm pretty sure he'd give Mrs. Kepler a run for her money in the progressive side.

I'm wrong. I have always thought of them as separate things: articles information from an objective POV, opinions editorial content from a subjective POV. However, WaPo actually uses the term "opinion article" in describing its editorial page content, so you are right.

So, it's a opinion article, and it's nonsense.

I'm wrong. I have always thought...

Here's a lesson the universe has so far failed to teach me in dozens of attempts: if you're going to be a pedantic jerk, at least make sure you're correct when you do it. :)

I agree. :p

Meanwhile, Sandy D. chimes in.

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor says President Barack Obama should get to nominate a replacement for the late Justice Antonin Scalia, rebuking Republicans who have in recent days shown reticence toward voting — or even holding hearings — to approve a successor in an election year.

"Well, you just have to pick the best person you can under the circumstances as the appointing authority must do, and one that we care about as a nation and as a people," the 85-year-old O'Connor said in an interview with Fox's local Phoenix affiliate. "And I wish the president well as he makes choices and goes down that line. It's hard."

SDOC is probably my second favorite person to ever go through Washington.

I'd get rid of my congressman (Bruce Poliquin - R) in a second. Total slime-ball businessman. My senators are okay (moderate republican Susan Collins, center-left independent Angus King)
