Re: The Power of the SCOTUS VIII - I am certiorari we'll be arguing until Thanksgivin

This one will head to the Supremes as a 1st Amendment Question.

Is something I said that is offensive to you protected speech?

I thought the Supremes addressed this issue already??

The US Supreme Court on Thursday [June 26, 2014] unanimously struck down a Massachusetts law that banned protesters within 35 feet of abortion clinics, ruling that the law infringed upon the First Amendment rights of antiabortion activists.

The decision effectively overturns about 10 fixed-buffer-zone laws across the country, from San Francisco to Portland, Maine, but offers a framework for more limited restrictions around clinic demonstrations, legal experts said.

“They’ve approved the idea of this kind of law, just not the mechanism,” said Jessica Silbey, a Suffolk University Law School professor. “It was too broad.”

If a court finds his conduct amounted to harassment or the equivalent, no way that reaches SCOTUS. This isn't about categorical restrictions, he was being a ****** and didn't tone it down after complaints.

This will get REALLY interesting in light of the whole "safe space" movement.

"safe space?"

People set up physical zones - a room in a building or, as in Mizzou, a place staked out on a lawn - where only encouraging words can be spoken in praise of whatever group of people and/or their movement is occupying that particular zone.

I wish nothing less than physical harm on those people. For the sake of our entire species. I seriously hate where humans are going right now.

Actually, to shorten what I said earlier, what a "safe zone" is, it's a liberal echo chamber that people love about conservative talk radio so much. It's what the journalism communications professor and the students forming the human wall at Mizzou were physically enforcing against the photo journalist student earlier this month.

It's why I love Bill Maher. He's a liberal but doesn't stand for this liberal bull****:

He's just using the same kind of hyperbolic faux poutrage about the supposed PC police that conservatives use. Hardly a liberal just another tv personality who favors things that benefit him. But I'd love to see him do a halloween show in legit old time blackface. After all, what's wrong with that?

I think you missed his point.

This is also what I like about Maher. Not necessarily on this issue, but in general he gores everybody's ox.

Bill Maher is the left wing's Rush Limbaugh.

If that's your thing, fine. but he's a pompous ******* who's also an anti-vaxxer. Thanks, but no thanks.

Maher is definitely limited -- it's painful to watch him try to hang with the experts. I didn't know he was anti-vaxer but that fits -- he loves his adoption by the Hollywood jet set.

He is not an anti-vaxxer...if you ever heard him talk about it you would know that. He thinks we OVER vax (btw we do) but he is not one of the crazies saying not to vaccinate anything. He spoke out against the likes of Jim Carey and the Blond Nimrod.

He is pompous but he is hardly Limbaugh. He isnt a fat hyperbolic hypocrite and he believes what he preaches. His stance on the overly PC crowd is because the college libs hate him cause he dares to speak out against Islamic Extremists. Of course the same Ivory Tower Limousine Liberals speak out against Islamic People who say the same thing. (and banned them from speaking) He asks all comedians about it too because they have to deal with it.

Ok, so he's only half crazy? That's hardly any better, because it makes people believe his crazy stuff more.

Parsing the line between "Measles vaccine good; flu shot bad" is something that needs to be done with a fine line, and Maher has never been known for nuance. And when he gets called on it and then turns to the "I'm just asking questions" canard, well again, thanks but no thanks.

The problem with vaccines is that they work too well. My entire generation has never seen an iron lung, or known anyone who's contracted small pox. They forget how bad these things were.

.

I will take his anti-mercury stance over everyone else wanting to get inoculated for every new possible virus that exists today. I have gotten the flu maybe twice in my life and never gotten a flu shot. It doesnt take as much nuance as you think it does. (especially if you are even somewhat educated)

He is definitely all in and does not parse things well, but he also is not meant to. I like him and I dont agree with some of the things he says. But I agree with more than any of the people on MSNBC,CNN and Faux who do nothing but carry water for their respective side.

From the CDC:

"Thimerosal is a mercury-based preservative that has been used for decades in the United States in multi-dose vials (vials containing more than one dose) of medicines and vaccines. There is no evidence of harm caused by the low doses of thimerosal in vaccines, except for minor reactions like redness and swelling at the injection site. However, in July 1999, the Public Health Service agencies, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and vaccine manufacturers agreed that thimerosal should be reduced or eliminated in vaccines as a precautionary measure."

Later on on that same page:
"Thimerosal was taken out of childhood vaccines in the United States in 2001."

But yes, by all means, continue to believe Maher is something other than a blowhard talking out of his ***.
