Re: The Power of SCOTUS V: The Final Frontier

Just heard that a company wants to fire someone who's gay because its a religous exception to the law.

The floodgates are opening.
Source?
If it's a religious organization, depending on the circumstances, they may have a case.

They are bigots. Plain and simple. They have no case.

If I was a Catholic adoption agency, I would not want to be forced to place a child with a same sex couple as they are living in a relationship that I would consider sinful.

Hiring? May be a problem. If I am a religious organization that has tenets that proscribe same sex marriage, I may not want to hire a person in a same sex marriage.

Re: The Power of SCOTUS V: The Final Frontier

That is a bunch of crap...you dont get to pretend you arent hateful and bigoted just because you think God hates fags. Nice try joe. (and by nice I mean, ridiculous and disgusting)

I think it is time for these organizations to start paying their due. If they want to be bigots fine...start paying taxes. It is ridiculous they dont anyways but if they want their rights, they got to ante up just like the rest of us.

Well then put on your waders, Bunky. Setting aside for a moment your scholarly "I just heard that a company. . ." crapola.

An honest "progressive". . .for whom the First Amendment means only worshipping at the First Church of Sandra Fluke.

No more bigoted than you.

Re: The Power of SCOTUS V: The Final Frontier

Please run on this. Make it the centerpiece of your campaign. Maybe women secretly want you to mansplain to them what they really need.

What did women do before Obamacare? Oh yes, they paid 25 bucks a month at Target. Anyway, that sleazy gambit may have some juice left. Who knows? Jeebus, don't forget racism (not that there's the slightest chance you ladies ever would).

Interesting trivia regarding the etymology of "bigot," which many of you might have already known: From online sources, it appears that the origin of the word bigot and bigoterie (bigotry) in English dates back to at least 1598, via Middle French, and started with the sense of "religious hypocrite". The exact origin of the word is unknown, but it may have come from the German bei and Gott, or the English by God.

No more bigoted than you.

Intolerance of bigotry is just another form of bigotry to you?

Re: The Power of SCOTUS V: The Final Frontier

IIRC, the whole genesis of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act is a bit droll in the current context.

A native American tribe used peyote in their religious rituals, and Scalia wrote an opinion in which he said that they could not claim a religious exemption from existing federal drug laws. In response, Senators like Ted Kennedy and Harry Reid sponsored the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which was signed into law by Bill Clinton. Now that very same law was the basis of the Hobby Lobby decision. Yet somehow I don't hear the left castigating Reid and Clinton because of their involvement with this suddenly-odious law!!

The left's apoplectic response to a very narrow and limited ruling is more than a little weird. The actual terms of the ruling will not allow most of the fanciful hyperbolic scenarios being floated to stand. The first part of the ruling stated that a compelling government interest could override the claims of a religious exemption, and there is no doubt that equal protection under the law is a compelling government interest.

It is so sad that moderation is so out of favor these days. Everything now has to be extreme. No compromise between reasonable people who reasonably disagree can ever be permitted in the current environment.

It is even sadder that there is no such thing as "shame" any more. People are totally comfortable being mean to other people merely on the basis of a political disagreement. At one time politics was merely part of the background and decency mattered more.

As I said, please, please run on this. It's a real winner. All the women of the country will bow down to you and Rush for rescuing them from their confusion about their interests.

Since you mentioned it, you can also explain to minorities how the GOP is really their savior, too. After all, PARTY OF LINCOLN!!!1111!

Ever notice how the same posters who don't get the need for birth control are also the same ones who are about 30 years past the age to have any use for it?

Hey, be polite. The homophobia, sexism and racism that run rampant on the far right aren't bigotries! They're their "peculiar institution."

The sad thing is, this isn't really true. Well, among our posters maybe, but there was nothing on God's green earth sadder than the 4 or 5 cute (Mormon, as cute anti-birth control girls seem inevitably to be Mormon -- Joesph Smith was no fool when he made his "divine" mate selections) bimbettes outside SCOTUS with their pro-HL signs and their vacuous smiles. The derp runs so deep in Provo it can even make a 20-year old girl into a grumpy 75-year old codger.

Re: The Power of SCOTUS V: The Final Frontier

I have the over/under at 36 months before this one hits the Supremes:

Federal Gov’t Sues Wisconsin Company, Says English-Language Requirement is 'Discrimination'
http://cnsnews.com/news/article/bri...-sues-wisconsin-company-says-english-language

I say language is a workplace health and safety issue and the business is right in mandating English in their workplace.

PS - Could this affect colleges and their TOEFL requirements?

Try thinking outside of Utah Kep! The people most interested in regulating other people's sex lives are the people not having sex. As in Republican conservatives! Ever watched the GOP convention? The average age of the crowd is like 85. It looks like a get together at the dog track back when greyhound racing was still legal.
