The official thread of the 2010 World Cup draw

Re: The official thread of the 2010 World Cup draw

Well, I know what TBA and I will be doing for at least a part of my birthday :) When England got picked for that date first I was like "aw crap, know what TBA will be doing that day", so I guess it helps that USA got that group too, ha.

Re: The official thread of the 2010 World Cup draw

Has Brazil ever not made it out of the Group stage?

This would be the year to happen if it hasnt happened yet

You mean watching a football/soccer match wasn't your first choice of things to do on your birthday? I'm surprised you aren't excited about the South Africian vacation with your husband for your birthday. Oh darn I've ruined the surprise. :o

I think the better question is how much is Ronaldo going to have to dive to get Portugal out of the group stage?

Re: The official thread of the 2010 World Cup draw

FSC is showing Sky Sports News on this, much better than ESPN's coverage.

Thanks. Yes, it's far superior. It's funny to hear their analysis of the group (WHEN we qualify for the Round of 16). They should advance, but they're being incredibly presumptuous.

Re: The official thread of the 2010 World Cup draw

Ruud Gullit on the USA-England game was awesome. "The English came to America...of course the Dutch came first." :D

Re: The official thread of the 2010 World Cup draw

This group is nowhere as weak as people think though. Algeria is scrappy, and Slovenia...I don't underestimate them.

I completely agree that this will be a tough group and Slovenia will be particularly tough. This is, after all, the World Cup. All the games are tough, but considering the teams we avoided, this is a great draw. Not an easy draw, but one of the best we could of gotten.

Yes, Slovenia is no walkover, just look back at our results against other central European teams in the last couple of World Cups (3-1 loss to Poland in 2002 and 3-0 loss to the Czech Republic in 2006).

Re: The official thread of the 2010 World Cup draw

As much as I loathe FIFA's shady backroom tactics and dealings it does seem like this draw was fair. If anything the CONCACAF countries all got pretty good draws all things considered. Its like an apology for being lumped in with Asia again.

Re: The official thread of the 2010 World Cup draw

What an inexplicably flat performance that Poland match was, wasn't it? Though it gets a bit lost amid the hazy glow of Dos A Cero and beating Portugal.

I'm not sure I can put the Czech Republic loss in the same category, they were just a better team who we caught before their old players all wore down, and we lost to them. It happens, I don't think it had anything to do with where they're from.

We have lost twice to Yugoslavia and greater Serbia in recent world cups. Of course those were both in Europe.

Re: The official thread of the 2010 World Cup draw

By the way, Slovenia beat Russia in the UEFA playoff. If you put Russia in our group you'd think pretty highly of the group, right?

So don't discount Slovenia, they'll come ready to play.

OK, we lost to Yugoslavia in 1998 in France, but when else did we lose to "greater Serbia"?

By that time Yugoslavia had lost almost all of its ethnic minorities in Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, and Bosnia.

The Yugoslavia that remained was only Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo. They just didn't get around to changing the name for a few years.

OK, but that doesn't answer my question, which is, when else did we lose to one of them besides 1998?
