The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

Re: The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

Will this decision lead to the eventual inclusion of Canadian schools into college hockey? If so, it might help level the NCAA v. CHL war and get more Canadian kids into our system, and thus, elevate the talent level in college hockey.

Aboslutely. That happened a few years back and people speculated the impacts. University of British Columbia was rumored to be considering it when it happened. Increased money in college hockey could benefit canadian schools. University of Windsor would be a great addition to the CCHA. Still long shots but you are right it could open the door for this and I agree it could improve the talent pool in college hockey.

I didn't think the decision was a recent one, but I guess it's actually happening so we'll see if there's any fall-out.

No it wasn't but the fact that a school has acted upon it is interesting. I think some schools would seriously consider adding hockey and with all the shake up that will happen in the next couple years it would be a great time.

Here's a question that might have been addressed somewhere else in which case I apologize in advance. However, many of the top players for CIS teams are washed up CHL kids, who aren't eligible for ncaa hockey. How would CIS teams be able to join the ncaa?

They still wouldn't be elligible. Those teams would have to adhere to NCAA rules and would ultimately have to go out and recruit kids that fit under NCAA guidelines. Which means those former MJ kids aren't elligible. Which if you ask me would make guys think a little harder about playing college hockey over major junior because that option to play collegiately after MJ won't be there. It is a smart move for NCAA hockey atleast to recruit canadian colleges. Not only does it expand the game but IMO it would direct more talented kids to college over juniors.

I was going through my closet the other day looking for something to wear....came real close to donning the old Miami Hockey Jersey. I can't wait for hockey to start.

I heard alot about how talented Curtis MacKenzie is and how well he played last year. Is all the hype true? Seems people are talking about what a steal the Stars have in him.

I think everyone would agree he played beyond expectations as an 18 year old frosh. Needs to mature in the respect that he racked up 86 PIM, he plays agressive but was a tad bit out of control at times. Personally I love to watch him play, hope he takes a big step his sophomore year!

I'll leave the actual hockey analysis of his play to someone else :)

Dear Mrs. MacKenzie, :)

I would not say he's shown that he is a steal, darfted about right, IMO, but he definitely brought an edge to the team. MacKenzie played with some good players last year - early with Miele/Palmer, then IIRC briefly with Camper/Wingels, then with Cannone, then, again, IIRC, with Camper/Palmer in the UM and BC games. So I think the question is with Wingels and Palmer gone can he take over as a go-to player himself? That's what I am waiting to see. As 628 said, he and R. Smith are still very young. MacKenzie is one of those players you love when he is on your team and hate when he is on someone else's team. I'm glad he is on the team I root for. I'm hoping for at least as much production this year, more self-generated production, and a little more discipline at certain times. JMHO.

I wouldn't say he played beyond expectations. I had high expectations. Kid played extremely well in juniors and had shown a great ability with the puck. For me knowing what we had around him you had a sense that he would benefit from it. Now he was out of control at times last year, but sometimes that grit is needed. Jonesy had a tendancy to play out of control at times but also had the ability to play undercontrol. He has great size and I believe his hands will only get better.

I would agree with you, had he put up 40 pts then I think you can say he was a steal but he didnt. This is a big season for him, he needs to take what he learned last year from playing with guys like Wingles and Palmer and elevate his game. I think you hit the nail on the head in your last sentance. He needs to be more disciplined. For me that is the growth I need to see in his maturity. IMO if he can get a handle on that it will make him a better player in every other area of the game.

Re: The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

So after all this Big Ten Conference shenanigans goes down, what kind of a conference is Miami looking at. Are we going to team up with some of the other elite teams (NoDak/Denver/CC/Notre) and try to get something going there, or are we looking at a watered down conference that is loaded with struggling programs?

WCHA has made it clear behind the scenes that they do not want to go past 10 teams. Anything right now would be speculation but there will be a lot of shakeup. North Dakota isn't going anywhere, there attendance will be fine and they will still get the games.

Some things have been thrown around and one is: Denver and CC leaving the WCHA and coming to the CCHA, NMU and LSSU going to the WCHA helping both financially. Which would leave the CCHA with 8 teams. Ideally they would like to ad UAH but would have to find another team to be the 10th school. This would leave the WCHA and CCHA healthy with some solid programs and rivalries within their conference. The CCHA wouldn't have the big ten schools but they would still have their traditional 4 power schools in Notre Dame, Miami, Denver, and CC. The WCHA would be fine with the minnesota schools. NoDak will survive no mater what, SCSU and Duluth are very solid programs so they would still have a very competitive league.

Problem is travel. Miami does not want to play in a western league where they fly for 6 conference series a year. If you added those two to the CCHA it would mean only 1 additional flight a year which isn't awful. DU and CC fly for their conference games as it is so not a big difference for them. Putting NMU and Lake st. with another UP school in Tech and the minnesota schools which most are closer anyways it helps save their programs.

The eastern Conferences shouldn't be affected, but there will be shake up and a lot of it is dependent on how many if any other schools make the jump.

Re: The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

Yeah... definitely sticks out. And it looks like they forgot to add the phone number, so some dude with a really big Sharpie wrote it along the edge of the graphic.

They got rid of the ugly yellow circle around it!

Re: The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

To be frank, my first reaction is that a consolidated Big Ten Conference would destroy college hockey. you have the programs with the richest budgets and largest recruiting bases. I mean no offense to the schools out east with great and rich traditions, but the largest amount of money is in the big 10 schools. putting them in one conference might not affect those eastern schools, but it would basically leave the other western schools to fend for themselves.

I realize that some of my MU brethren might take offense to that, but i'm not sure miami is quite ready to be the flagship school in a conference. We're playing well now, and the program just seems to be growing every year. but i would argue that Michigan is the flagship program despite some a down year or two.

I'm rambling a bit since it's late, but IMO, the best solution is to add PSU to either CCHA (me being greedy) or one of the eastern conferences: AHA (a big school would add a LOT of money, but doesn't really fit into the climate of that conference), ECAC (see previous), or Hockey East (based on budgets, name recognition, school size/potential fan base, earning potential, travel, potential recruiting....this probably makes the most sense to me).

Re: The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

again those weren't complete thoughts, just some late night ramblings b4 bed. hopefully, through further discussion, I can flesh those out a little more soundly.

nite all.
