The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

Re: The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

To be frank, my first reaction is that a consolidated Big Ten Conference would destroy college hockey. you have the programs with the richest budgets and largest recruiting bases. I mean no offense to the schools out east with great and rich traditions, but the largest amount of money is in the big 10 schools. putting them in one conference might not affect those eastern schools, but it would basically leave the other western schools to fend for themselves.

I realize that some of my MU brethren might take offense to that, but i'm not sure miami is quite ready to be the flagship school in a conference. We're playing well now, and the program just seems to be growing every year. but i would argue that Michigan is the flagship program despite some a down year or two.

I'm rambling a bit since it's late, but IMO, the best solution is to add PSU to either CCHA (me being greedy) or one of the eastern conferences: AHA (a big school would add a LOT of money, but doesn't really fit into the climate of that conference), ECAC (see previous), or Hockey East (based on budgets, name recognition, school size/potential fan base, earning potential, travel, potential recruiting....this probably makes the most sense to me).

step away from the ledge '08!!!!

Big 10 schools have a lot of money, fact. Big ten hockey programs have a lot of money? No. Miami's budget is on pair with big ten hockey programs. You have to think, majority of the Big Ten budgets go towards football and basketball. Schools don't pour a lot of money into hockey programs. If they did OSU would have a hockey only building and not have to work around their mens and womens basketball teams....or Ohio High schools for that matter.

This is a common misconception that big ten schools in hockey are powerfull financially. They are rich in name and that is their biggest accet. There are plenty of great players out their and those schools can only bring in so many. As it is those schools get top flight players so not sure how they can do a whole lot better.

There will be an enourmous shake up in the conference landscape. No sense in speculating what I have heard, just let it play itself out. Penn St. won't come to the CCHA, they formed to join a BTHC. This move has potential to add growth to the game as well as potentially keep some kids from going the major junior route.

Take a deep breath bud lol, no need to panic. Miami will be fine, there are schools that want to be in the same conference as them because of their direction, leadership, and talent. Don't forget Notre Dame is still in this conference as well, they will not be alone.

I have my Miami All-Access subscription ready this season since I won't be attending games given the move to the west. Can't wait for the puck to drop!

They supposedly have made changes and upgraded the quality....so maybe now you can make out the lines on the ice...

I agree, the other top schools in college hockey will be just fine. People need to keep in mind only one new team is being added, so even if PSU steals a few recruits this is not going to shut down college hockey like some people on this board think it is.

The only thing I will disagree with you on is some Big Ten schools(i.e. Minnesota and Wisconsin) do make a lot more money than Miami does. Sconnie averages 13,000 a game and Minni is 10,500 and I guarantee their ticket prices are lot higher than Miami's. The good thing is Michigan, MSU, OSU and soon PSU probably won't make tons more than Miami.

Yea I wasn't specific enough, you are correct about that so thanks for pointing that out.

But my point, and I think you will agree, moving to the Big Ten won't increase their revenue a whole lot to make a huge difference. They already do well enough and its a level playing field. I don't see how a little more money will change things for those current programs you can't pay players. Both schools have great traditions and sell out. A recruit could care less, IMO, how much money the school makes. They may be able to recruit a little more but I am just not buying that it will have as big of an affect as most think it does. Having gone through the process myself the only 3 things I cared about were the head coach, the tradition, and if they had something I could major in and enjoy. Money has little impact on those, but everyone is different.

Re: The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

Maybe I've missed this or it's just a dumb question but everyone seems to be hung up on the creation of a big 10 hockey league. What if that doesn't come to fruition by the 2012-13 season, what league will Penn St. join? Can't imagine them being independent.

If this has been discussed and I've missed it, I appologize.

They will be independent the first year. It was in the story as well as reported earlier. They Big ten hockey conference won't be formed until 2013-2014, PSU will play independent their first year of D I hockey.

Check the forum we have moved threads to the season thread.
