Big 10 schools have a lot of money, fact. Big ten hockey programs have a lot of money? No. Miami's budget is on pair with big ten hockey programs. You have to think, majority of the Big Ten budgets go towards football and basketball. Schools don't pour a lot of money into hockey programs. If they did OSU would have a hockey only building and not have to work around their mens and womens basketball teams....or Ohio High schools for that matter.
This is a common misconception that big ten schools in hockey are powerfull financially. They are rich in name and that is their biggest accet. There are plenty of great players out their and those schools can only bring in so many. As it is those schools get top flight players so not sure how they can do a whole lot better.
There will be an enourmous shake up in the conference landscape. No sense in speculating what I have heard, just let it play itself out. Penn St. won't come to the CCHA, they formed to join a BTHC. This move has potential to add growth to the game as well as potentially keep some kids from going the major junior route.
Take a deep breath bud lol, no need to panic. Miami will be fine, there are schools that want to be in the same conference as them because of their direction, leadership, and talent. Don't forget Notre Dame is still in this conference as well, they will not be alone.
To be frank, my first reaction is that a consolidated Big Ten Conference would destroy college hockey. you have the programs with the richest budgets and largest recruiting bases. I mean no offense to the schools out east with great and rich traditions, but the largest amount of money is in the big 10 schools. putting them in one conference might not affect those eastern schools, but it would basically leave the other western schools to fend for themselves.
I realize that some of my MU brethren might take offense to that, but i'm not sure miami is quite ready to be the flagship school in a conference. We're playing well now, and the program just seems to be growing every year. but i would argue that Michigan is the flagship program despite some a down year or two.
I'm rambling a bit since it's late, but IMO, the best solution is to add PSU to either CCHA (me being greedy) or one of the eastern conferences: AHA (a big school would add a LOT of money, but doesn't really fit into the climate of that conference), ECAC (see previous), or Hockey East (based on budgets, name recognition, school size/potential fan base, earning potential, travel, potential recruiting....this probably makes the most sense to me).
