The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

Re: The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

If/when this news becomes official what kind of impact do you guys think this will have on our recruits already in place for a couple years down the line? You would hope they don't jump ship but I guess you just don't know...

It is official, just not going to make it "public" yet because they are working behind the scenes on things.

I don't see it having an impact on Miami recruits. In recruiting terms I only see it benefiting college hockey by bringing the defects to the OHL back in play. Just because Penn st. is a name doesn't mean they will be great automatically and the current teams that are in the Big Ten already get great recruits. May make OSU more viable and they may get a hockey only facility now, but Miami has a boat load to offer kids still and will still get recruits. The big thing with this is the money. The Big Ten schools will make more money and will control the schedules. They won't have to travel to the likes of Lake st. or Ferris or Western anymore which drove people to the gate. That will hurt the smaller programs. But Miami will still sell out as will North Dakota and Denver. This won't affect the eastern programs one bit, if anything this will hurt the CCHA the most. WCHA is in a good position. They are fine with 12 but they are also fine with 10 teams when minny and wisco leave.

Re: The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

Do you think there is a chance the Big Ten would invite Miami in since not all 11 schools would have div. 1 hockey programs? Hockey only of course. Just a thought.

Re: The Official 2010 Miami offseason thread: 3rd times a charm??? maybe???

Umm...no. If the BT wanted to invite all these schools...ie ND, ND, Miami etc, they would have already made a conference and not bothered to wait for a Big Ten school - and they would have called it something else.

Hmm...Good point. But with only 7 of their teams having hockey programs it sure would make for a small conference. I know there have been smaller ones in the past, but I would think that one of this caliber would at least have an even number. And when you consider the logistics of it, you have to admit, Miami would be a good fit. I'm just thinking out loud, that's all.

Highly doubtful...the big ten requires schools to join for all sports, and if they haven't bent that rule for ND footbal they sure aren't going to do it for hockey.

I think everyone would be dumbfounded if that happened. Not a chance in hell, imo.

Everyone will be dumbfounded if a BTHC actually comes to fruition also. Why would Penn State even want to join that league if they added, just so they can be a bottom feeder for the next 10 years?

Just like everyone else has said no they wouldn't. They can operate as a 6 team league, and if Indiana decides to take the jump like they have expressed then it would be a 7 team league and they could still operate. However this may motivate Notre Dame a little more to join the Big Ten, more revenue from a sport that they are starting to invest heavily in.

This will never happen. Ever. I can't see them committing to a conference if it involves football. If you mean moving from the Big East, I can see that, but I doubt the Big Televen would allow them to keep football as an Indy.

I wouldn't be so certain that a new Penn State program would automatically be a "bottom feeder" in any league for any length of time.

Those conversations are not even in the same ballpark as far as ND nation is concerned. If/when ND joins the Big Ten, potential hockey revenue will be about 100th on the list of reasons to forgo football independence.

Not to say the administration would never consider it as a factor, but they would be suicidal if they stated it publicly as a reason.

Exactly.

Hockey isn't the sole reason. But the added TV revenue from the Big Ten network from both Hockey and football is a motivation. I never said hockey alone, I said Hockey may help their deceision as a package deal. They are investing heavily in hockey. Football solely has proven isn't enough but if their hockey program suffers from the new BTHC after they invest a boat load of money into it, a move with all sports isn't out of the question when you look at the money they can receive from the Big Ten. Money drives everything these days and to say they never will is foolish.

I agree, Penn St. will not be a bottom feeder. They have heavy money invested, in the 80 million dollar range. They have support in happy valley and will be competitive in the first 3 years.

Ridiculous statement to say ever.

You think ND would agree to join a football conference? No way. I also can't see the Big 10 giving them that "Big East" deal by letting their football team not in the conference.

I can't see either happening.

"ever" may not be the right word, but it won't happen as long as ND in the contract with NBC - when does that end, anyone know?

Now if Kelly fails and the football woes continue and it starts to hurt NBC's ratings, I could see NBC balking at renewing or at least not renewing at the same $$$ when the current contract expires, which then could prompt ND to look at other options like the Big Ten Network...but short of that I don't think it wil happen anytime soon...

Hence why I said If/when. I believed ND was a Texas leaving the Big 12 away from ending up in the Big Ten for next season. All I was saying is that if they do make the move the administration would NEVER NEVER NEVER cite hockey as a reason. I can just hear the alumni now (I have three in my family) if they did. Donations would dry up before the presser was even over.

Ultimately the time will come when ND cannot feasibly remain an independent and schedule the caliber of games they would like and maintain their home to away game ratio. Wether its next year or twenty years from now they will end up in a conference eventually.

Again I will repeat money drives everything. Somewhere on ESPN they said that ND would of gotten more money from the Big Ten than they did from their NBC contract. If they can make more money with football in the Big Ten you better believe they are looking strongly at it. Not to mention getting hockey a better place now that their conference is going to fizzle out.

Like I said above, if ND can get more money out of the Big Ten it makes it more viable of an option.

Ok you need to read carefully before responding. No where did I ever say hockey would be the reason. I said, and I will repeat again, they have invested heavily in their hockey program. The CCHA is going to fold in a couple years or at the very least be very very shaky. If they can find a stable home for their hockey program as well as make more money for them as a whole and their football program which is the ultimate their it may be more inticing. Of course hockey isn't the reason but it puts another ball in the court of reasons to join the Big Ten. You got to look at the big picture, its all about money if any sport can bring in more money more often than not they will do it. The BTHC will not have "parent" members, so ND can take a chance in a weak CCHA or make a power move in the NCAA that will give their football and athletic programs a boat load of money as well as benefit a program that they are investing heavily in.
