Well it's a good way of starting practice earlier. :D

Other sports do this. I know Miami women's basketball has done it a couple of times. They did fund raisers (I was involved in the free throw shooting contest :) ). There is a limit on how often you can do it (like once in five years). Interesting that it is ok to play professional teams. The big problem, like everything else, is money. Got to be very expensive for a hockey team.

Actually, I have a foggy recollection that Miami did this back in the day, very early in the program's history.

HAHAHAHAHA see their is a fix for everything! I too am surprised they are allowed to play proffesional teams. Where I went to school our womens basketball team went to Australia and played for 10 days. There would be a lot of fundraising involved, but a couple guys in the NHL with some money they could throw Miami's way to make it happen :D .


On another note, nice article here about Jay Williams. So big names he is linked too and some pretty nice compliments from the coaching staff. The more you read about this kid the bigger the signing is for me.

Also Connor Murphy with a nice tourny at the Hlinka, OT goal to send the US to the championship game and had a couple assists earlier in the tourny. Sean Kurlay also contributing as well with a goal. Jay Willams played well in net, some good showings by some recruits.

RHM, the article you posted about Jay Williams (http://www.usahockey.com/Template_Usahockey.aspx?NAV=TU_04_02_05&id=290608) says that he will be playing the next 2 years with Waterloo and then on to Miami. With his mind seemingly set on the NHL and his continued development and success, do you think we'll ever see him between the pipes in Oxford? Maybe I'm reading too much into to this, but what I got from the article is that Miami is just a stepping stone for his pro career. One maybe two years here before he moves on to the NHL? I guess what I'm asking is, is he worth the investment?

You didn't ask me, but my two cents would be that we have no choice. With Reichard and Knapp in the same class and both with two years remaining, they have to offer this kid and hope that he honors his commitment. Knowing that he will see plenty of PT at Miami as "the guy," I think we see him in '12.

Oh for sure, Miami is just a stepping stone for all of these guys. But with that said its worth the investment because you will get atleast 2 years out of him but most likely 3. Its harder for goaltenders to jump early and play substantially. You don't see many goaltenders leave after 2 years, now it has happened but even the top flight ones stay atleast 3. Case in point Zatkoff left after 3 and lets be honest it was the wrong choice, he was poorly advised and has been stuck in the minors since he left.

He graduates high school after this year so while they say he will play 2 years of juniors, that can change. I don't see him going to the OHL, he is a prep school kid. Not trying to categorize but most often if parents are looking to put their child in a prep school and if they kid wants to go to a prep school education is somewhat important to them. I think this is a great find for Miami because his stock is on the rise and they got him early.

With all that said I wouldn't read into the article except as a positive sign. You want a player that is motivated like that to get better everyday. Even if his ultimate goal is the NHL he has to improve and impress along the way, which means he will be focused on succeeding. So yes I think we see him between the pipes and I think we seem him play well like he has the past year.

Amen- And don't be discouraged if we see another goaltender signed this year or next. With two in the same class they need to find a capable back up but Williams is ultimately the guy in line to replace the two current starters.

And we don't need to ask '95 your opinion is always welcomed, even if you abandoned the state of ohio.....:rolleyes:

RHM & 95, what you say makes sense, thanks. With the current situation of having 2 starters (a good situation to be sure) in the same class, my concern for the past 2 years has been "What happens when they're gone?" It's hard enough to replace one outstanding goalie, but TWO? I also understand that recruiting is a never ending process, I've just gotten used to having top ten net minders and every time one of them graduates, I get a little nervous:cool:

Understandable, but remember we have had this debate a lot and someone has always stepped in. Having two goaltenders in the same class isn't ideal and not what they wanted but when zatkoff left early they had to bring knapp in early and are in the situation they are in. Williams is very very good and if he is as motivated as people say he should be fine. But its never settling until they get games under their belt. I would look for another goalie to be signed and brought in next season. Not to be the starter so to speak but an insurance policy. And to be honest some of those so called "insurance policies" have worked out well for Miami in the past. I.E. Rich Schulmistra, Charlie Effinger, and Cody Reichard.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Hirsch with a nice 25 point season this year.

I would. Really nice player, great kid, great team player. But he is a role player, he isn't a goal scorer like Jonesy. But he is in the right place at the right time and gets those keys goals because he just works harder than most other people. Double digit goals would be a great season, but he isn't the type of player to rack up 15 assists. He is a guy that plays below the hash marks and does it really well. Honestly he has turned out to be the guy that they had hoped Vaive would.

I'm at work and can't look but what line was he on last year. Probably B smith and Voges most the time. If he gets out there with Reilly Camper or Miels his assists should skyrocket. My 25 prediction was him being like Cannone his first year just racking up assists winning the battles in the corners and hitting someone in the slot. Not saying that's how Pat got his but that's how hirsch could

He was getting some opportunities on the #1 line with Camper last year but like most of the guys, was certainly moved around a bit by Rico.

25 points might be a stretch, but if he gets 10 goals like RHM said, that should mean the offense is rolling again!

He played a lot with Miele and Wingles towards the end of the year. He was up on the first couple lines a lot. Mainly because of what his role is. It would be pointless to have him and Vaive on a line together.

Hirsch is a very good player and plays his game really well. I think he would even admit his game isn't to score goals. I don't think Miami needs him to score 25 pts this season. He needs to win the battles and apply pressure to the opposing teams defense, that is after all how he scored the game winner against Michigan. He will get his chances and has capitalized when he has, but if he tries to become a goal scorer Miami will be in some trouble.

BTHC (big ten hockey conference). Is going to happen. Penn St. is adding Division I hockey in the 2012-2013 season.

Got it from a reliable source that its already in place. Indiana might not be far behind them either. The CCHA is in trouble....Some programs have already said they might drop hockey if this goes down....Miami would be stuck, WCHA said they don't want to add and want to operate as a 10 team league, which is why they brought in Omaha and Bemidji knowing this was going to happen.

I think Miami will be able to survive because of the commitment from the administration and the program they have built but their conference will be mediocre at best. However Cornell in the ECAC has survived and blossomed in a second tier conference, lots of shake up happening in college hockey.

If/when this news becomes official what kind of impact do you guys think this will have on our recruits already in place for a couple years down the line? You would hope they don't jump ship but I guess you just don't know...
