The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

The question is whether the TV networks want to go to Sunday games and tick off the NFL. They would get great ratings in the short term, but the nets have a substantial relationship with the Shield. Not sure they want to jeopardize that.

Also, college football needs to be careful or the NFL may decide when they come back that they'll put a couple games a week on Saturday and take some of the luster off the college game.
If the NFL is not playing, no problem. The networks are trying to fill 4 - 8 hours of air time on Sunday. I for one, do not want to see cooking shows, reality shows, extreme sports or anything of that ilk. But, us old fogies remember when the World Series was televised during the day. MLB could fill out some of the dead air by putting the playoffs on daytime TV on Sunday.

Of course, if they wanted to televise Sunday college hockey starting in October instead of college football, no problem.

If they didn't play a single game next season, I know I wouldn't miss it nearly as much as I did when with the most recent MLB strike and the NHL kerfuffle. Actually, I'd probably not notice it was gone, there are so many other things to do on Sunday afternoons, it probably wouldn't bother me at all.

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

The NFL can not put games on Friday or Saturday during a specific time of year to not take away from High School and College Football...if there are lost games by the NFL, ESPN/CBS/VS would be silly not to schedule some games on sunday...

The SEC and B1G would not move games from Saturday, everyone else would at the very least ask "How much more will you pay us"

They want people to watch, not turn off their TVs :p

There's also a legal question of whether the NFL stuck a "no compete clause" into the TV contracts with the networks which would prevent them from airing major college football games on Sunday. ESPN has aired some minor college games in recent years, but nothing that would compete with the NFL for eyeballs. CBS will expand golf coverage. ESPN already has PBA Bowling. Fox will be freed up to do more NASCAR; maybe borrow some EPL from Fox Soccer Network. WTBS shows a national game on Sunday, so it is unlikely Fox/ESPN can show more baseball. NBC/Vs have that old fan favorite: poker. NBC already has Poker After Dark and the Heads Up tournament and Vs shows the WSOP preliminaries. Poker would be a natural fit for them.

For those of you needing a football fix, the Alouettes are blowing out the BC Lions over on the NFL Network.

All of these are very good points.

Regardless, if the NFL doesn't play, these stations won't even come close to the viewers that they would have with the NFL playing.

Yeah, no.

Part of the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 that allows the NFL/MLB/NBA/NHL etc. to pool their teams into a national TV contract without violating anti-trust includes a part where the AFL and NFL agreed to no Friday games after 6pm and no Saturday games from the 2nd Friday in September until the 2nd week of December.

Fortunately the NFL doesn't have any lobbyists or allies on the Hill that could amend that law...

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

All in all, I just want football.

I mean, fantasy leagues are a part of my income every year;)

That'll fly for all those Senators from states that worship college football over pro. Read: The south and midwest. But hey, you still might be able to get everyone else on board and have it threatened with a filibuster instead.

Adjusting a broadcast law to allow a professional league to "get back" at college sports is the sort of useless pandering that they do every few years for votes, like steroid investigations and yelling at the BCS. Given that it won't actually gain them any votes, it won't be done.

"If we don't allow the NFL to play on Saturday, the terrorists win."

I surrender. You've just convinced President Bachmann of the justice of your cause.

If President Bachmann or Palin happens, I'm moving to England. :D Why not? They at least have football. :D and the TV is much better over there.

Re: The NFL Thread, Part III: What lockout?

(I know it's not a B1G game, but still...) Why not? UW's already playing in a **** Thursday game this year.

It's also the national season opener, televised on ESPN. I get the complaints, but I think it's a great opportunity, and I'm glad they took it.

And the cash incentive that went along with it.
