Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

The Vikings must be upset that their two biggest rivals are in the NFC Championship game after they were the ones expected to be there.

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

You could. The way the teams are playing, their opponents so far, injuries, etc. I think it'll end up around 4.5-5.5, as WI fans in general are notorious for betting a ton of money and swaying the odds a bit.

Um, no offense, but that's not even close to the same thing. The Bears and Packers were in the league for 40 years before the Vikings even existed, with the Bears winning 6 NFL Championships (making the title game 10 times) and the Packers winning 5 (8 title games) between 1933 and 1965. The two teams were in almost 2/3 of the title games (no playoffs before 1933) pre-Super Bowl and only met in the postseason once. That's amazing...
Its not surprising at all, they've always been in the same division. The wildcard didn't exist until 1970. So from 1933 to 1969, you have to finish tied for the division lead to have a "playoff" game which happen in 1941. That only happen 9 times the Packers and Bears were both involved in 2 of these with 1941 being the only time they played each other.

The Packers were pretty horrible in the 70s and 80s so that explains that era.

Disrespect also, Go Jets

so long as it all ends with Rex and company losing in ignominious fashion, I'm okay with this.

Let's see, which NFC Central team do I less want to deal with in 3 weeks...

They were? I didn't hear anyone that knew much of anything about football predict Favre having another good year and the Vikings doing much of anything.

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

I can't predict anything to save my life, but the guy who had the Chargers losing to the Saints in the Super Bowl... whoa.
my personal favorite is the guy that had Packers over Panthers in the NFC championship game...

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

The Vikings are a train wreck waiting to happen. The early schedule is tough, Favre is already getting his ankle juiced and the season hasn't started yet. Easy to imagine a public spat between the QB and the coach by November, right in the middle of a three-game losing streak that drops the Vikings to wild-card status and then a quick exit from the playoffs.
Wow, who'd have thought this guy was soft-pedaling it? A Wild Card berth?! ;)

Coach Who Won't Be Back in 2011
"Lovie Smith, Bears: While I think Chicago will be an improved bunch this season, they won't make the playoffs and that will mark the end of Smith's roller-coaster era as Bears coach."

I'd be curious to hear what Bears fans think on that one. I mean, Chicago has had a nice year, but has Lovie's standing really improved in anyone's eyes? He's still kind of what I thought he was.

The bears have won at least 7 games every year after Lovie's first, made the playoffs 3 times in 7 years, made the super bowl once...possibly twice. I would think he's doing pretty well.

Boy, I don't know. The discussion I've had with Vikings fans ends up - what would you rather have, the Vikings situation, where they have largely been good, but not ever won the big game, or be a Bears fan, where they are much more up and down, but when they are up, they either win the big game (1985) or at least make it there (2006).

On Lovie, specifically, at minimum, he's gotten the team to the Conference Championship game twice, both at home, and is on the verge of making his second Super Bowl apperance, when they had only been once in franchise history before he got there. Does that make hime Belichick? No, but how many other coaches have been to the Super Bowl twice in the last five years? How about the last ten? Belichick is the only name on that list unless Tomlin and Smith both win this Sunday, then they both join him. Hard to argue with that...

Re: The NFL Thread (cont'd)

As a Bears fan I am happy with the job Lovie Smith has done so far.

The Bears really have the same problem they have had throughout their history and that is never having a franchise QB (Sid Luckman was the last). Anytime thats the case you will have up and down seasons.

But their biggest asset is also the same as it has always been, a good (sometimes great) defense.

Good stuff:

Tom Jackson

Ya, Tom, that's exactly what you were trying to do

What an idiot
What an unprofessional thing to say. And didn't two ESPN in-studio hosts recently high-five Mangini's firing? Are there any standards over there at ESPN? (Dumb question, I know.)
