The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Having reffed (not hockey, but other sports, including college baseball), I tend to cut the refs a break. It is a helluva lot tougher than the average Joe in the stands thinks. You have to make a split second decision and don't have the benefit of being able to stop play and look up at the video scoreboards and second guess yourself like the 3,000+ people are going to do. If these average Joes think it is so easy, lace up the skates, pass the exams and get out there and do a better job than what you are seeing.

I saw someone post this over on another board and I think it rings true. Until you make refs a full time position, there is going to be room for improvement, perceived or otherwise. Remember, these guys have day jobs and reffing is a side job for them. The couple of hundred bucks they get paid for a series sometimes isn't worth the crap they take sometimes. I always knew that coaches, especially college ones, were going to be tough, but the fans are the ones that can be the real jerks. The ones that don't know the rule book are the worst.

POST OF THE YEAR!

Seriously, this can not be emphasized enough... The current crop of Refs/Linesmen are working D-I for a reason... They didn't get there by accident... A three sides (WCHA, B1G, NCHC) are all complaining about getting guys that were around before... Well, I'm sure there are guys that want to move up, so if the powers wanted new guys, they had a great opportunity to do so... They chose to stick with the current staff for the most part...

I've only had one ref that really sticks out in my mind that is an unprofessional ********* that truly doesn't deserve to be a college hockey ref. I might have temporary dissatisfaction with a ref, but don't generally think refs are "bad" per se. Over the course of the last season I saw this ref start an argument with our coaches on multiple occasions. The worst being that he missed a call and the coaches let him know about it. It was all over and done...until play stopped. Then he skated over to the bench and started antagonizing the coach who had his back turned to him and kept asking him mockingly "what's wrong" "do you have something to say" "is there a problem". That's the only time that I've ever truly thought a ref shouldn't have that job. Outside of egregious things like that, most refs do a pretty good job. They will make mistakes, but it really comes down to the teams that are on the ice and playing the game. The good teams will rise to the top and the bad teams will sink to the bottom, regardless of the refs. That's why I think the consternation that I've seen from a few fans bases (albeit, not really much in this thread) is a bit over the top.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

The WCHA will be offering FREE video for all games....each school, with Bowling Green the POSSIBLE exception, all forked out $$$ to buy new equipment for the set up that will basically be an upgrade to what America One/B2 offers...Some schools may offer separate radio and webcast crews...some will simulcast....as far as TV, no national deal is in place as far as I know....ROOT sports could be a possibility down the line for Fairbanks and Anchorage...GCI cable televises the Alaska schools home games...live statewide, but tape delayed in Fairbanks and Anchorage,,,Channel 7 KFXF the FoX affiliate in Fairbanks televises some games over the air...road contests generally live...home contests with the tournaments and Governor's Cup tape delayed again.....Revenues will be split three ways with WCHA, FOX and each school getting 1/3 share of advertising....BG, a division one school with football, has an agreement with another company, and don't know the details there...

If that first sentence is true, I'm going to need more monitors at home.... :)

I believe BSU Home games will still be broadcast live in HD over the air on Lakeland Public TV, and in standard def on DirecTV's Minneapolis Market, Minnesota Public Television's "MInnesota Channel" as well as on the Public Television Stations that pick that channel in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Great news. Where did you hear it? ROOT Sports has picked up GNAC basketball in the past...wouldn't surprise me if, eventually, they televised the Governor's Cup.

But...but...no Doug Martinson?!

I never quite got how Doug got around being both a booster — not in the financial sense, so maybe that's it — and also being an on-ice official. You'll notice that I never, ever rode him ...

I doubt it. GCI is purchasing KTVA here in Anchorage and is expanding their operations both there and on Channel 1.

Awesome! Any links to this would be appreciated.

I was told the WCHA and Fox Sports1 did not want the radio feed for the online games, so separate broadcasting teams will be used.

If they can find the broadcast talent in each market and pay them. Nothing is finalized at this point. If it were, Fox and the WCHA would have made an announcement.

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

Has anybody heard if the WCHA will have a "channel" on Roku like the USHL?

It looks like if they end up on Fox Sports Go, it would just be available on iOS and Android devices to start with.

I'd be surprised if they went to any of the set-top boxes anytime soon without a good way to get ads into them.

WatchESPN is on the AppleTV, and requires you to log in with your service provider's account information so they can confirm you're paying for ESPN. NBCSportsNet's mobile app works the same way. I would presume Fox Sports Go would operate the same way.

Really hoping they'd push for an AppleTV version of FoxSportsGo.

It took ESPN a while to get there, which probably means that they argued over how much of a cut Apple would get. Also, Apple may want to keep the number of channels down since they're not taking an a la carte approach like Roku has. That's not a knock on anyone involved — I am about as Apple invested as you can get — but rather an assessment of the business client. Don't expect it for this season.

If you have an Apple TV and an IOS couldn't they use Apple Airplay?

Re: The New WCHA 3, Revenge of the Sieve (2013-14)

I agree that costs and talent availability will be a factor...The want a full blown TV production for a free internet broadcast with tv potential possible in the future. Schools have already forked out at least six figures for the equipment... But the cost for a producer, director, and camera operators...why not use the radio broadcasters who know the teams the best and simulcast .....Fairbanks and Anchorage do with GCI and local tv casts...
