The New WCHA (2013-14)

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

If you remove the Alaska schools, the closest city is Green Bay.

Ferris will certainly be hoping that Lake Michigan is froze over so they can drive "as the crow flies" since they are the closest team to Green Bay and likely have the longest drive to get there. But seriously, Green Bay actually looks really good from a location stand point. The Alaska teams will have to fly regardless and really only Ferris and BGSU have long drives to GB.

...wonder which team will bolt first? Duluth? Western?
Or maybe the correct question, which new NCHC dormat will be kicked out first when another new team outside the NCHC looks more attractive. Don't think they would do it? Just ask MSU, MTU, BSU, UAA their opinion... I could see SCSU or Duluth longing for the WCHA after a few seasons when they start looking at their travel budget. However there would have to be some serious butt kissing for them to be welcomed back in less than a decade.

...and a long drive for any "new" WCHA fan who lives in the LP or Ohio. No more easy drive to JLA. Bummer. My vote is for Grand Rapids--Van Andel Arena is right down the street.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Grand Rapids is more convenient for 2 teams. Green Bay is more convenient for 5 teams. They both suck for both Alaska teams. Green Bay is a better choice.

The championship AND the league offices should at the very least be in a state that has a WCHA school. Why should Wisconsin benefit from this?

Well, there still is a woman's WCHA team in Wisconsin. We need to remember that the WCHA has both Mens and Womens member schools.

Agreed. I'm simply an advocate of GR, because the Van Andel is just a couple of miles away.

Okay, feel free to hold the women's championship there, and put the league office in a state with a men's AND women's team.

Ok, so that's MN or Ohio. Its not going to Ohio, and there is no suitable location in Minnesota, unless you think the State Fair Coliseum is a good venue. Try again.

Grand Rapids is more convenient for Ferris State, Bowling Green and Lake Superior State.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

If it happens (which I doubt), St, Clooud would be the first to seek readmission to the WCHA. They were the last to be invited, and there was a reason for that.

However, I think teams that moved to the NCHC will stay there.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Green Bay:
Marquette, MI - 177 miles
Houghton, MI - 211 miles
Sault Ste Marie, MI - 282 miles
Mankato, MN - 353 miles
Big Rapids, MI - 435 miles
Bowling Green, OH - 454 miles
Bemidji, MN - 480 miles
Anchorage, AK - Flight
Fairbanks, AK - Flight

Grand Rapids:
Big Rapids, MI - 58 miles
Bowling Green, OH - 204 miles
Sault Ste Marie, MI - 286 miles
Marquette, MI - 400 miles
Houghton, MI - 499 miles
Mankato, MN - 610 miles (Flight)
Bemidji, MN - 796 miles (Flight)
Anchorage, AK - Flight
Fairbanks, AK - Flight

Its really a no brainer. Green Bay is a closer drive for both Ferris and Bowling Green than it is for Bemidji.

I don't want the state of Wisconsin to benefit from this, especially since the University of Wisconsin and Alvarez was a major instigator in the start of this breakup. My opinion.

Perhaps 3 years is an appropriate amount of time?

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

Thanks once again for proving the utter ignorance of today's typical WCHA fan.

Hint-o-rama:: He isn't Bettman and this isn't the NHL.

Now run along and go write something this week that you'll invalidate next week with another post; then take a completely different position the week after that. In other words .. keep being you; a least common denominator has it's uses.
Banned again eh?

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

personally I liked it, just as I liked op's missives. Seems to me he is so emasculated now he might as well be...UAA. He's like some sort of retired guy on medication so he won't hurt himself and living in a nursing home.

As far as the offices, good air connections would be nice, so Minneapolis or Detroit would seem to have an advantage. Certainly office space in Detroit is cheap enough. A lot cheaper than minnesota.I bet there are some existing offices already set up with a staff and everything.

It seems to me that a central location is important for the tournament, but not necessarily for league offices. Detroit or Minneapolis may be as good a choice as anything.

The CCHA certainly has jumped into this year with a new purpose. Lots of weekly highlights, player interviews, and archived game reviews on YouTube. Also have a firm grasp of Twitter and Facebook and are actually interacting with fans from all eleven CCHA schools. There certainly has been a noticable shift in motive since Anastos left. Would be nice to see the CCHA's efforts continue in the WCHA.

Re: The New WCHA (2013-14)

I fair amount of communication is good, but please don't go to the level of the Sue. I signed up for their email list in the hopes of knowing about their jersey auction at the end of the season and I kid you not, they send out 2-3 emails PER DAY for the hockey program. So and so hurt his knee today... Highlights from their last big win... Interview with the coach... Billy flunked his home-ec exam... They must think their email list is a Twitter or Facebook account. Either that or they have 100 monkeys with keyboards that they need to keep busy. One email a day is boarderline spam level. If MTU ever emailed me that often I would unsubscribe, and I'm a huge fan (and user of the THG weekly digest). :-)

Doesn't make that much sense does it with the whole thing folding into the other.
