The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Interesting tweet from @LetsPlay_Hockey

"Iowa State University is still pursuing a Division I men's hockey varsity program. The logical league for them to join would be the WCHA."

I don't think I'd get too excited over road trips to Ames.

Ever been there? I'm sure it can generate just as much excitement as Mankato, Big Rapids or the Soo.

Davy D: While I've never been there, NMUkat82 has pretty descriptively explained just what a *hole Ames is. I'll take her word for it, and agree with BigBlue on this. If I want to see NMU play league games at a *hole rink, I'll drive the five and a half hours to Bowling Green. I don't need to go five and a half hours to Ames.

What I am excited to see is interest in expanding the Division 1 NCAA programs and the interest the WCHA is drawing (or driving). I hope that this isn't another fishing exhibition like Moorhead, and that this is the start of a commitment to Division 1 NCAA play.

Yes. I witnessed my buddy get in an argument with a "no parking" sign there on St. Patrick's Day a few years ago. Yeah, it is just as boring as those places that you mentioned, the only plus would be that it is at least a pretty big school.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

I had a great time in Ames the one time I went there in college. Ames is a fun town to party in and would be a good road trip town for hockey hockey fans. I agree it is a dump, but so is the rest of Iowa.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Ames is just "meh" for me... Had more fun on trips to Iowa City and Knoxville... Still better than Des Moines though....

IA City > Ames > Davenport. Haven't been to Des Moines. Of course, this is all relative since these towns are all in IA.....

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

How many kids say they want to go to Denver University because Root Sports carries all their games? Who really says "Gee, it would be nice to be part of Michigan or Michigan State because they're always on FS-Detroit?"

I think that it's not as big of a thing for the players of the big-name schools as those simply in the league. I talked to our Michiganders a few years ago when we were hoping for a CCHA bid, and they were excited about being on TV where friends and family could see them. It's not that we ever expected TV to come to Huntsville [although we certainly would've welcomed it], but it's about that as a factor. Exposure isn't just to scouts. We're still talking about young men who want to see and be seen.

GFM <-- probably screwed up the demonym for Michigan and will get flame-roasted, but it's about to be summer in Alabama so I won't notice the heat.Z

The bottom line with Ames is that it's no better or worse, on the average, than the other WCHA towns. But the other bottom line is we haven't heard anything from ISU AD Jamie Pollard or President Greg Geoffroy. Until you do, the point is moot.

Agreed. The only "tangible" thing we've had was earlier this year when Bemidji's and Fairbanks's ADs were reported to say that Iowa State was one of the four schools interested in joining the WCHA. They also said UAH (of course), Moorhead (which fell through), and Green Bay (which quickly denied it). Iowa State didn't say anything, which I found curious, figuring they'd have at least denied it as Green Bay did if there was nothing to it. Let's Play Hockey's tweet adds nothing new.

If Dickie Dunn writes it, it's gotta be true! Til then...

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

The fact that there have been a few reports and no one at ISU has denied it tells me that it is on their radar screen. I would guess that they are seriously considering it, but who knows what they'll end up doing.

I heard they were moving the whole university down to a little town in Florida. They got a bunch of old timers from the Northeast down there, and what do you think they miss? A Saturday night game, their own team. They have a rink already built they just need to get a good deal on a team. And since ISU isn't exactly the New York Rangers...

See, the thing is that I have a hard time believing that a BCS school would even notice that they are being rumored... If they aren't looking into hockey, how would these ideas even get to them? I highly doubt that anyone on ISU's PR staff or Athletic Department payroll is a regular reader of USCHO, INCH, ect...

Green Bay is a smaller school that had the "major" newspaper in town check into the rumor because of inquires from USCHO readers... I haven't seen any evidence of that taking place anywhere in Iowa...

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Tidbit from the NMU announcement of Forrest Karr as the new Athletic Director:

A WCHA league meeting has been scheduled for June 12 through the 14.

In DETROIT.

That probably just means that they're going the route of taking over the CCHA offices, as was discussed here. I think it makes sense.
