The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

I've been wanting NMU to get involved for a decade since they have a PBS station on campus, but budget issues have always been cited as the road block. As for me, I don't really have an inside track with anyone forming the new WCHA, but I'd certainly be more than willing to help perform due diligence as seen in these threads.

Televising, will most likely be only local for any team in the nWCHA. Will that offset $'s from lost attendance because people will choose to stay at home and watch with a beer rather then go to the game?

Internet streaming allows a further reach. Though you can make the same argument that people will stay away from the arena but advertisers can get a national audience.

Not in Bemidji where you can get beer and mixed drinks in the arena!

One issue we have with the WCHA is that it still has a league to govern for 2012-13, unlike the NCHC, which doesn't have that issue. We may not see a whole lot of decisions this summer as there is still a current season to get ready for. But the league has set up three groups of ADs to do research on the various aspects for 2013-14 so that things are fast tracked once all the departing parties finally get the he** out.

I really don't see governing the current WCHA being that much an issue. Technically I suppose nothing is officially voted on, but the soon to be WCHA can still make things happen. Votes taken and agreed on etc

On a school level, but I think as long as the other 8 schools are in that league for next year there would be issues if The WCHA was working on anything other than 2012-13. IMHO.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

As for television, I like whats happening in Bemidji. The local PBS station broadcasts all the home games and also offers them to other PBS stations in the state. They have good announcers and put out a quality product. Now if we could only get the PBS stations near the other colleges to do the same I could see more hockey and would be willing to support PBS.
All you need is the funding to do it.

Those other 8 schools can **** themselves with a 2x4.

While I can agree that you have to manage the current season while it is in progress, what is their really to do once the season starts? I would guess anything pertaining to 2012-13 (other than pop up items like discipline) are already in stone before the first puck drops on the season. I'm sure any other season, most in-season meetings would normally be focused on future season issues anyway. I'm pretty sure BSU and UNO were in meetings with the WCHA teams before they were playing games in the league and I'm sure that speaking with the 2013-14 WCHA teams will be done in the open as part of normal league operations in 2012-13 as well.

And as Blue mentioned, if any of the "quiters" have a problem with how the future members of the WCHA choose to spend their time meeting this season, and who they meet with, well they can resign effective immediately and forfeit their remaining WCHA games. Like a former supervisor once told one of my coworkers - "You think the grass is so much greener on the other side? Then why are you still here telling me about it? Just go and see how much better it really is... and don't let the door hit you in the rear on the way out."

On the flip side, why should the New WCHA tip it's cards allowing the new NCHC schools see what they're doing?

If there is to be a WCHA.tv website streaming every league game, why should the NCHC schools be privy to this information, allowing them to set up a similar site?

(Of interest, WCHA.tv redirects to an Apache server error, CCHA.tv and NCHC.tv doesn't exist)

I think that the new schools should be meeting separate from the ones that are leaving, so that this couldn't happen. Set up league meetings with only the schools that should be involved, because there is no reason to let any of the other schools participate in those talks. I understand not being able to make any official decisions right now, but they can still get alot of work done behind the scenes this way.

Which, from what I've gathered from the NMU AD search, is what's happening. The New WCHA schools are broken up into three groups of three to discuss different topics.

Lets just hope they don't screw it up somehow. :p

While i'm perfectly willing to cut them some slack until next spring when the divorce is final, after whatever date that is I really want to see some action. I'll be quite disappointed if nothing much happens and the WCHa operates with a business as usual attitude.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

I'm not sure this is a big deal if the NCHC schools know what the WCHA plan is for broadcasting. It's not like the NCHC and the WCHA are competing for eyeballs in the same market. D1 hockey is still a regional afair. I doubt that there are thousands of fans in Colorado who are lining up to watch internet feeds of new WCHA games if there isn't access to NCHC games. If Denver can't get fans to watch Pioneer hockey games (because Colorado is the best state in the world with so much other stuff to do) then they certainly aren't tuning in to watch BSU vs Bowling Green.

Whut? It's not even close to #1. Want to go skiing? Live in Colorado ... otherwise the joint is no different from quite a few other states down the list.

pay attention, Colorado fans constantly state that the reason DU and CC can't fill their buildings is because Colorado is so awesome and there are so many things to do that people just don't attend hockey games...

Come on now, Colorado fans (read: DU and CC fans...don't lump me in that group! :p:D:D) also complain about the fact that the arena is off campus (CC) and that student breaks fall at poor times (both CC and DU), in addition to the weather/other things to do argument.

FWIW, I just finished up my first year at DU and received a grand total of 0 emails about upcoming hockey games during the season. I did receive a few emails about basketball games, and one lacrosse email, but other than that, not a thing. I was quite surprised because at CU I got emails a couple times per week about sporting events.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Maybe DU's daddy has a ski chalet and therefore DU has better things to do than to email students about DU activities.
