The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

But Bruce should be guiding the group and coming up with solutions to problems. Finding new and appropriate opportunities and creating a stronger conference. I do not see how he did any of this.

As an example B1G run by Delaney is probably the most "profitable" conference and he made sure of that regardless of the bottom feeders always in the conference. Compare that to say the Big 12 and how that conference regularly has issues. Why? TX controls it for football, the rest be ****ed. There is little sharing of revenue and in my belief a conference it made to share and help each school in that manner.

Somewhere between the socialist view of a conference and pure independence is what Bruce should be managing. I do not see that leadership nor innovation.
But not being in on the meetings, knowing what was discussed and how it was discussed, makes it very difficult to make an accurate judgement.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

So, what do we know for sure at this point after the meetings last week?

-A 28 game schedule has been adopted.
-Expansion and UAH were discussed, but no decision made. UAH may be allowed to make a presentation at a later meeting.
-All nine teams make the playoffs with the Regular Season Champion getting a bye to the tournament semifinals.
-It looks like the two Alaska Schools, if one of them is not the Regular Season Champion, will play each other in the first round regardless of standings. Some controversy here as some reports are saying that it is not set in stone.
-Travel Subsidies will continue for members going to Alaska, with Anchorage picking up 14 tickets. No word on Fairbanks.
-All schools currently broadcast their games on the internet, so no movement on setting up a common link/site/channel.
-The conference tournament MAY be held at the Xcel Center on years when the Big Ten is not there. This is still being explored, as is other facilities.

Did I miss anything or screw anything up more? It seems like every school took it upon themselves to talk about how they percieved thing went down. You also have McLeod giving his take in the press, which makes it even that much more confusing........

I do not know what meeting info he was in on or not. If he was not in on any of these meetings or knew of their possible issues then he should NOT have commented on the plan. It is very easy to defer.

I mean that neither you, not I, not being in on the meetings makes it difficult to give an accurate judgement.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

well we can judge results. The thing that is essential now is that the league members are totally unified and pull together to get results. This league can be solid and can be getting top recruits and good attendance if we pull together.
Yet here we have a lot of disagreement and it makes it into the press and some things that would be nice to have done are not done. Not great leadership if you ask me.
Course it is better than the nchc where everything is done from the commish's living room.

This one frosts me the most because there isn't a common system between all the schools.

B2TV:
Bemidji State
Bowling Green State
Lake Superior State
Northern Michigan University
Minnesota State Mankato
University of Alaska
$8 per game, season pass for each school available for $75. Only good for home games, and select road games against other B2 schools.

Stretch Internet:
Ferris State
$8 per game. Unknown if both home and away.

JumpTV:
Michigan Tech
NO Single games. $12 for a month of games. $70 for the full season. Unknown if both home and away games.

NMTV:
University of Alaska Anchorage
Unknown details

There are no standards for the webcasts, no single "WCHA League Pass" account for all access, no way to watch ALL the games of your team, and no cheap replay option. The least the WCHA should do is politely ask the three outliers to simulcast the feed on B2, allowing for someone purchasing their teams season pass to watch all the games.

Hell, if all the games were covered, you could even talk a sponsor into "presenting" a weekly free game on B2, to draw interest into the WCHA brand. That would be a great marketing tool.

Replays available to watch for $3, or $4 would be even more fantastic.

At least our league had meetings. I haven't heard of the NCHC doing much of anything.

The WCHA NEEDS to take over the CCHA offices, even if it's just for a year or two. Tap into the brains that really made the CCHA special last year (YouTube highlights, tweets, facebook updates, social interactions). I'm worried that if the league waits too long, that talent is B1G and NCHC bound.

RELAX, jesus, just because it wasn't mentioned doesn't mean it hasn't been discussed and won't be discussed. Settle down and let it play out.

I hope you are refering to the media guys at the CCHA, who did an excellent job last year. We don't need Fred Pletsch and his cronies ruining the new league.

Yep, that's who I mean. The web guys did a fantastic job last season.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Only Bowling Green and Ferris State are within a reasonable bus trip, while keeping within the NCAA 48 hour rule, unless travel is done during a break period. It's a flight for LSSU, NMU, Tech, Bemidji and Mankato as well as the Alaskas.

We have this discussion every time, but I will tell you this: put UAH in the nWCHA and the only fly dates for us will be the Alaskas and Bemidji. Mankato might be, but I don't think it will be. We'll do the Michigan schools and BG on a bus.

Now, it's easy to say, "Look, you'll do that because you're desperate." That ignores the fact that we have done this sort of travel our entire D-I tenure, including five 18+ win seasons and two NCAA berths. If we can figure it out, y'all can, too. Just because we're rocket scientists, ...

What makes Karr a "dbag" for casting his vote in what he felt was the best interest of his program? You don't make "token" votes to show unity.
If he did it as a UAF then he's a dbag by looking out for his future employer instead of his current one. If he did it as an NMU rep then he's a dbag for going on with this crap idea.

So anyone that differs with the UAA vote is a dbag? I won't tell you who Karr represented at the meetings. Anyone that knows anything knows the answer to that one.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

I would guess Bruce is used to a league with extremely strong members (UW, MN, UND, DU, very strong members) who made key decisions via behind the scene discussions. The worst I could say for him is that he's going to have to make adjustments to step up and force stronger leadership than the past league. And if its seen he can't make that transition, it should be known soon enough.

Love the "Rocket Scientists" bit GFM. I've made the Marquette-Birmingham trip enough time to know that Yes, it can be done. I can even point out some great placces to eat on the way. There's no denying that. But can you convince enough Presidents or ADs that doing it is in the best interests of their programs? As for who might vote in favor, there's no real difference for the Alaska schools, whether they fly to Detroit, Minneapolis or Nashville. Bowling Green is a very reasonable bus trip and Ferris is very doable as well. One key could be whether expansion requires a simple majority of 5 votes, or a 2/3 majority of 6. I could see those 4 giving support. But can you get enough votes from the rest of the league? i hope there's a way.

Re: The New WCHA 2, The Electric Boogaloo (2013-14)

Just be glad that we aren't trying to have this argument in a thread for an eastern conference, where the drive from Boston to Amherst is considered arduous.

Heck, you don't even have to go all the way to Boston, they consider Amherst to Worcester to be an overnight trip.
