The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

There is plenty of evidence that the Sioux is offended...in fact, its posted every six months.

Frank's right. This is cut and dry. There is no freedom of speech issue...the NCAA is a voluntary association. None of this policy was invented out of thin air. Its exactly what the Universities want. And for better or worse, UND will change its logo...and if there was any debate about that, the Big Sky issue closed that chapter.

How many Sioux are offended? What's the magic threshold? In the minds of PC types, the answer is 1. There have been numerous columns over the years offering up that very standard. "If even one native American is offended, blah, blah, blah." And though you're probably right about how this will turn out, it doesn't represent a high water mark for the NC$$. In fact, it represents the triumph of iconoclasm and misguided reverse racism over common sense and pluralism. And goes a long way toward establishing apartheid. One day some bureaucrat somewhere will make a demand that you find "crosses the line." It'll be too late.

Funny stuff.

Suddenly the repression of a few epithetical words and phrases becomes reverse racism? Let's face it people; all the NCAA is doing here is restricting the use of a name and a symbol. Is it to appease some people that are offended? Sure. So what? Perfectly acceptable for the NCAA to limit it's member organizations from using symbology and terminology that is offensive (and it is regardless of Old "Anders Behring Breivik" Pio's ridiculous assertions) to other member organizations?

Don't like it? Get out of the NCAA or ffs just don't develop a deep personal attachment to ANY symbol.

I'm offended by seawolves...change it...or is that just crazy? The line the NCAA is drawing is simply stupid. Of course they have the ability to do that and since the NCAA exec committee is a bunch of crusty liberal white people, they decided its important to PC. Next thing you know, they will come after Wisconsin and Michigan because their nicknames reflect a group of people that were abused by rich businessmen, it was cheaper to replace the badgers and wolverines than actually keep them save...but hey, white on white issues aren't any of the NCAA's business (see Notre Dame Fighting Irish).

If you were an entity that was a member of an organization of similar entities then your point here would mean something. You aren't and therefore it doesn't.

The line the NCAA is drawing is simply stupid.
And a range of subjective definitions just like this one exist across the spectrum.

Irrelevant entirely. That's like claiming fat and shirtless is somehow reflective of a person's fandom.

Lovely and easy to say ... of course NONE of that claptrap will come to pass and your assertions that such a slippery slope is a result are fatuous. And FFS .. the irrelevant and wholly debunked notion that ND Fighting Irish and UND Fighting Sioux share ANY historically racial commonality is LONG DEAD in the forum. It was killed years and years and years ago during these very same sort of discussions. Sadly, you know that.

Isn't there a USCHO rule about personal attacks? And isn't comparing anyone, let alone me, to a mass murder a personal attack? Oh well, I'm in a forgiving mood. I'm reminded of the scene in "Auntie Mame" where she's been put on a killer horse named Meditation for the fox hunt. And as she rides away to her certain death, Mrs. Burnside waves and says: "Goodbye, little Yankee gal."

The NCAA rule restricts schools from the use of "derogatory" nicknames during postseason events that are run by the NCAA:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2125735

It's not a ban on the nicknames themselves, per se, but the punishment of not being able to host NCAA postseason events is pretty detrimental to athletic departments.

As to why UND isn't leading a charge to change that rule, you halfway answered your own question. The vast majority of people that actually run universities (whether prestigious or not) are Ivy League-types, which is why that rule got passed in the first place. Trying to change that rule would be about as popular as a Tea Party candidate running for the mayor of San Francisco. If schools like Illinois and Florida State couldn't get the rule changed, I don't quite see how UND is suddenly going to make a different move (especially within the next 2 weeks).

The vast majority of university officials are "Ivy league-types"? So the NCAA ruling on banning the use Native American mascots was passed because "Ivy league-types" inherently campaign against the nationalistic fissures of racism? Unless you can verify that with some valid evidence that supports your statements, that's not only absurd, but indicates to me that you have your own brand of stereotyping. If you took the time to do a bit of research and trace the history of its development you would find that the NCAA ruling was simply a reflection of their efforts to comply and operationalize the 2001 ruling by the United States Commission on Civil Rights that called for the end of the use of Native American images and team names by non-Native schools.

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Isn't there a USCHO rule about personal attacks?
Yes

But, there is also a rule against libel, defamation, flaming, profanity, woofing, rumor mongering, flooding a thread with unrelated posts, trolling, starting threads on topics where there is already another thread, etc...

Fortunately, very little of that goes on here. :)

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

Can't we all agree that changing the name is for the better of everyone? By everyone I mean the folks who want to see Sioux fans unhappy. That is worth fighting for :)

Actually I would prefer they kept the name and just never got any home playoff games. :D

Re: The new Super League is going down the tubes.

I didn't think that the NCAA was going to put regionals at campus sites anymore anyway

That has been the thought about it anyways ever since the "Molly" game at Yost. Of course, that likely would have happened if that game had been played anywere else pretty close to Michigan say like Grand Rapids, Fort Wayne, or Toledo perhaps. Maybe not quite as loud and blood thirsty of a crowd perhaps, but it could have very well ended up about the same way, Wolverine fans taking offense to being called "Horrible people" and letting Molly and her friends know about it. ;)

Which is by far the dumbest thing they have ever done. The appeal of college hockey (and all college sports IMHO) is the tradition and atmosphere of the arenas. Way to lose that during the biggest and most televised games.

I agree that is why all Division one hockey championships must be played Xcel Energy Center.
