The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Finally watched Dallas Buyers Club. Really good movie.

Given the obvious "rivalry" with American Hustle for awards, I thought the acting was much better in DBC, but the story/writing was better in AH.

I felt myself being underwhelmed by AH. Maybe if it hadn't gotten all the hype leading up to the Oscars, but I keep waiting for something more than never happened. The acting was great, though I don't know if Jennifer Lawrence did enough to deserve a nomination, but the story was just more meh.

Jennifer is the current "hot thing" in Hollywood (think: All Star selections in sports: they don't always deserve it, but rep/career help). For me, AH was a great story, and the acting didn't need to be AS good as DBC, because of so many top current actors. It was still good acting, but not top notch.

Watched Little Shop of Horrors last night. I still love it. Doesn't hurt that I was in the pit for my high school's rendition. So much fun.

The Abyss

Excellent bordering on great. Especially given that this was filmed 25 years ago. The cinematography was spectacular. The effects must have been mind-blowing in 1989.

That's not even mentioning the fact that the movie was an absolute thriller that made you feel confined the entire time.

Solid, underrated movie. Decent character development, too. The smaller the budget, the better Cameron does.

American Beauty

Not sure if I hated this movie or loved it. Not sure if this was poignant or tried to be and was a miserable failure.

I saw this when it first came out on video but I was obviously way too young to understand it.

Sunshine.

What the **** was that? I'd have probably liked it but it was SO UTTERLY BORING. Even when naked sunburn guy started up it was just so dumb.

Dear RT and Flixster. Your ratings are wrong.

I thought it was very good. And you were probably too young to fully understand it. Very raw for its time (especially for a major release).

Oldboy (American version with Josh Brolin):
This was 6 different ways of *ed up. Really enjoyed it though. On a recommendation from a close friend that is also a movie geek, I watched this one before the South Korean original. I'd highly recommend. Not OMG YOU HAVE TO SEE but very much worth watching.

Parker:
Needed something lighter after watching Oldboy, and this fit the bill. Standard Statham popcorn movie: crime, double-crossing, some action. Good time-killer. Exactly what I expected it to be and didn't try to be more than that I enjoyed it.

Well, I watched it again this afternoon and I'm still not sure I understand it

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Amercian Beauty was unadulterated tripe.

I've only seen the Korean version of Oldboy which was very good. I need to give the American version a shot.

An older co-worker of mine said he hated it, because it was "too real." As in, it wasn't war (everyone knows war is hell) and it wasn't pure fiction. It dealt with real issues. And that is the reason I thought it was good.

Slappy: I have the S Korean version queued up. I'm actually rather afraid on how nuts that version is, given how the Asian market is a bit more tolerable on crazy-arse sh*.

The Hunter:

I admit, the only reason I checked this out was because of Willem Defoe. He did what he could, with what he had to work with. Cliched and tired story.

My recent bought list:
Royal Tenenbaums
The Public Enemy
White Heat
She Done Him Wrong
Little Caesar
Scarface (original)

Whats there to understand? Kevin Spacey has a thing for high school cheerleaders. Seems pretty straightforward. ;)

Next up on the Netflix Queue are American Hustle and the Llewyn Davis movie. Hopefully these don't sit on the coffee table for a few months like the last 2...

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Of all the Robin Williams' movies I've seen, my favorite by far is Moscow on the Hudson. He does a straight-up acting job, no manic improvisation at all. In the lists I've seen out, it's in everyone's top 10 but it doesn't get the write-ups that something like Good Morning Vietnam did.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Favorite Williams roles:

1. One Hour Photo
2. Dead Poets Society
3. Good Will Hunting

I'm going to have to see Dead Poets society one of these days. In One-Hour Photo he delivers an excellent performance of an overly creepy dude.
