Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Just got home from Guardians of the Galaxy on the UltraScreen - with recliners. :)

Really, REALLY liked it.

Similar in feel to the new Star Trek movies. Likable characters & great character interaction (chemistry), plenty of pace, cgi was impressive (at least to me) and pretty **** funny too.

Took my son and his buddy and they both loved it too.

Good to know that ALL the 16 year-olds loved it. :p

I finally saw "Funny Girl." Terrific first half -- even my loathing of Streisand wasn't enough to prevent me from being charmed by her young Brice. And if you're a fan of hats, this movie... well, this movie has great hats. Also great cameo by the always outstanding Walter Pigeon.

Second half is dreadful, probably because Babs has to act (she can't) rather than just mug (she can, wonderfully). And Omar Sharif's one expression that fits any mood (flirting, making love, being angry, breaking up a marriage) gets pretty cloying.

Solid B. And I finally understand "People Who Need People" in context, now.

Didn't care much for We Were Soldiers back 10+ years ago when I saw it, but I did love the Sergeant's character and his interactions.

The line about Custer was well placed and delivered. :)

Saw it at the drive in last Sunday, and I agree. Bautista surprised me, and holy crap can Cooper ever disguise his voice.

Kinda wish he had more lines as he was one of my favorite parts.

Bautista was good in "The Man With The Iron Fists."

Guardians of the Galaxy - I dare say it's the best Marvel Studios film ever. That clearly makes it the best movie ever made with Marvel characters in it. Perhaps Avengers is better but not by much.

Magic in the Moonlight - Woody Allen hits another homerun. It's an hour and 10 minutes of set up with a fantastic payoff. A real romantic comedy unlike the totally unrealistic and horrible Silver Linings Playbook.

Finally re-watched Django Unchained, and my assessment is the same after watching it the first time: thoroughly enjoyable, yet exhausting, and so multi-layered. While I liked Inglourious Basterds more, I think Django is a better Tarantino movie.

Taken On A Plane....I mean...."Non-Stop"

I wanted to hate it going into it, just needed to see all the cliches. Unexpectedly, I was not minding it. Until the last 20 minutes. Holy f* it made me want to puke. A popcorn movie turned political/governmentally aware? Oh f* that f*ing sh*. Ugh. Terrible. Don't even waste your time.

I'm going to admit that I just finished watching the Dungeons & Dragons movie, only because I read it was a candidate for the Troll 2 of the 2000s.

Honestly, Jeremy Irons is the only reason to watch it. If the rumors are true, that must've been one hell of a tax bill he owed on his Irish castle to sign on for that crapfest. I'm guessing he agreed to do it without seeing a script or cast list, then got a look at both and realized, "Bloody hell, this sh*t is awful. Well I'm screwed either way, I might as well collect my paycheck and have fun hugely overacting it." His Ham & Cheese is awesomely bad. Might be the best trope example I've ever seen.

The rest of the cast turns in performances that can only be described as C-list at best, and the script would make post-1990 George Lucas proud.

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy today. That was a really fun movie in every regard. The 70's and early 80's pop culture references were really well placed, and a few of them completely unexpected - all the better.

So, I was flipping through channels earlier today and landed on "9" on HBO. The few minutes I watched it before I stepped out were enough to convince me to DVR it when it was on again.

So, now I just got through the full movie. I have to say, I'm not sure how this movie didn't get better than the lukewarm reviews it did. I thought it was a spectacular movie. Charming and innovative (the graphics especially).

I stumbled across this movie again and would like to reiterate my comments (took me a while to find this post because you can't search for 9)

Such a good movie. I'm glad I stumbled upon it again.
