The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

New Robert Altman documentary coming out, to great reviews.

Altman is very high on my list of favorite directors. M*A*S*H was such a good movie. It's hard to appreciate today how much of an impact it had. Sort of like this quote: "why does everyone say Shakespeare was such a great playwright? all he did was take a bunch of famous quotes and string them together." The success of M*A*S*H transformed how movies were made afterward.

The Long Goodbye and The Player are also among my top Altman movies.

Saw The Shining at a friend's house yesterday.

Incredible film, though some of the ambiguity left me looking to fill some holes. Not plot holes or anything, but holes in how the whole story lines up for me because a lot of things could be taken in more than one way. I was told the book goes into some better detail and can close some of that up.

Still though, one of the best films I've ever seen. And it gave me a chilling dream last night. Not necessarily a nightmare but it wasn't the most pleasant dream, either.

It gets better with repeat viewings, too, which is a sign of a very good movie.

Now go see Room 237.

I found an Illuminati site that tries to reach for every possible item in the movie that could be a conspiracy.

I actually did stumble upon an AV Club review of Room 237. The review itself and the comments made it sound like it's people begging others to believe their theory, and there's instances where their evidence is just flat out wrong.

The constant Red, White, and Blue, along with the moon landing references are interesting to read about, though. However, being a non-moon landing hoax believer, I'm gonna have to conclude Kubrick was just trolling.

237 isn't about the Shining; it's about (1) how people see Jesus in their pound cake and (2) how film studies students can construct an argument for anything. I think it's fascinating.

But the scene breakdowns from the movie are wonderful. And the print of the Shining used is actually more beautiful than any theatrical version of the actual movie I've ever seen.

Oh geeze. Alien is an absolute classic. Accomplishes its goals sooo well. I'd actually say underrated at 49 on IMDB's top 250.
Rented it on VHS when it first was released. Scared the excrement out of me!

Alien is so amazing it can't be hyped enough. That people actually attempt to argue Aliens is a better movie is the worst indictment of society I can imagine (and Aliens is a very good movie -- it's just not genius). Alien is a suspense and a sci-fi and a horror work of art. I can't think of any other movie that can say that (Nosferatu is not a sci-fi movie, though it has a different hat trick if you substitute drama, or maybe even erotica). Even Blade Runner, which is another work of such ridiculous high art it can only be marveled at, doesn't have the same dramatic suspense edge (because it deliberately forgoes it as a brilliant noir homage).

See it in a theater someday. Trust me. You may know every scene word-for-word but it will still have you clawing the seat and rooting all out for Ripley. It is one of the few movies I've seen that can actually pull you in. Pretty much everything the last 20 years has that obnoxious, knowing, ironic wink that passes for this age's sophistication (and will be dated as this age's affectation). That movie doesn't give a shit about how clever you are, it just bites your head off.

But in movie theaters everyone can hear you scream..

Nosferatu is indeed very good.

I watched Batman Begins again on one of the HBOs. I think it gets overshadowed by the other two in the trilogy but it's a * good movie.

I gave it a watch. Had to stop halfway through and finish a little later, not because I thought it was boring, but because the presentation was hard to take in large doses. All the theorists presented in the same way, "Well, if you take a look at this, and then this, you'll see that this thing because of that. I saw it and couldn't believe I was the only one, I must be so smart." It was like Ancient Aliens on a different medium in that respect.

The new James Brown biopic, Get on Up, gets 3-1/2 stars in this review.

While not in this review, I had read somewhere else that Dan Akroyd (who plays Brown's manager) was pretty close to James Brown in real life, perhaps from The Blues Brothers?

Aside: The Blues Brothers is one of those movies that, despite having seen it a few times, will always catch my eye if I am channel surfing and run across it.

I actually liked that one best of the three.

That's a great way to put it. For the record, I watched it in pieces, too. It's rare I get to watch any recorded movie end to end anymore. Stupid adulthood is stupid.

After watching Sharknado 2 last night, I'm not sure about recommending it unless you're very drunk, very stoned, or very tired. I was very tired, and I loved it.

Oh, or if you're a New Yorker. It should be shown to all people moving to NYC, maybe at the DMV.

.

I enjoyed the cameos. The rest was beyond stupid, which of course was the point.

Biz Markie is getting work. That's all I care about.

The wife recognized him right away.

I'm like, "I bet he's somebody..."

She's like "I GOT a man." :D
