Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I saw Jersey Boys...it was about 30 minutes too long but still pretty good.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Watching Reservoir Dogs. When it comes to Tarantino, I like this one better than Pulp Fiction.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Inglorious Basterds was his best, IMO. Kill Bill (as one movie) was a close second.

For a good trashy fun movie, check out Bounty Killer. I loved it.

Blue Jasmine. I honestly don't remember the last Woody Allen movie I watched as a recent release that I enjoyed as much as this one. Cate Blanchett was really great, as well as Sally Hawkins, Bobby Cannavale and even the Diceman. Alec Baldwin wasn't given the best role to work with but certainly didn't hurt the film. Highly recommend.

I watched the documentary "Shenandoah" on Netflix last night. I thought it was a pretty well made movie. It tells the story of a brutal murder of a young hispanic father in Pennsylvania by a group of high school football players, the coverup by the local white police force, and the resulting trials which pitted friend testifying against friend. All set against the backdrop of a Pennsylvania coal town dealing with economic depression combined with immigration issues. I recommend it.

The last doc I saw was called "Informant" about a left-wing activist/turned FBI informant. Frankly, I think the guy's a nut-job, but it was a good documentary. The main event he ratted on was the possible-molotov-cocktail attack at the St Paul RNC a couple years ago.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

In the past few days I've watched the following for the first time in years and was reminded how wonderful they are:

Young Frankenstein
The Birdcage
Network
(and similarly but not intentionally)
Broadcast News

The Birdcage

I hate to be that guy, but if you haven't seen La Cage aux Folles you should.

I can't believe how well Young Frankenstein stands up. I see it about every three years whenever it makes a local culty/arty theater, just for the pure enjoyment of the audience. It might be the greatest audience comedy ever made.

Blazing Saddles was better, and could never be made today, even though Mel is Jewish. :)

I don't agree that it's better, but it's in the top ten for audience comedies as well. And The Producers is funnier than both of them, but it's not as much of an audience movie (unless you're in Manhattan, in which case... wow.)

The stage adaptation of The Producers got me into Brooks' films. He was good until his shtick kind of wore out somewhere in the late 80s. I love Spaceballs, but I admit it's hammy and relies too much on Star Wars for jokes. Robin Hood: Men in Tights has its moments, but is not very consistent. Dracula: Dead and Loving It was a complete bomb with too much recycling.

Mel got very unfunny at the end, but most of The Greats do. High Anxiety was only 3 years after his annus mirabilis and it's already pretty lame.

I shudder to think of a new Python movie. I want to remember Mays as a Giant, not a Met.

I'll take Frau Blucher over Lily, but both are great flicks. Even Brooks says there's no way Blazing Saddles could be made today. IIRC, he had to fight the studio to get it made back then.

The scene he thought was really pushing it was the one serious the campfire. Hilarious.

You're right - I liked High Anxiety, but it's forgettable. I think it's hard to parody Hitchcock in ways that are legitimately funny.

He only struck one joke from the whole thing. When Kahn says, "It's trwooo, it's trwooo", Little's line was originally, "You're sucking my elbow".

To be honest, I think that was the smart choice. That next line kind of ruins things.

Spaceballs and Men In Tights are hilarious.

Spaceballs is a pretty good parody, though it's something any decent writer/director could have done.

Men in Tights is execrable.

Men In Tights does NOT hold up over time. At all. Spaceballs, given its base material, kind of does.
