The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

Rock of Ages doesn't get a "best" anything. Although I do admit a guilty pleasure bit of actually liking it, as dreadful as it is. Perhaps it's my semi-lust for Julianne Hough, squeaky voice and all.

But it's really horrible. Even fans of hair metal should be disgusted with how they neutered the versions of those songs of any of what little heart, passion and "rock attitude" that they may have originally possessed.

THAT'S why it's awesome. It's so bad and cheesy. :p

The movie may be so bad it's good, but Cruise's performance isn't. It's just bad.

Oh, it's laughable. Fits the movie perfectly. Something like "The Last Samurai"......ok you'd have a point.

I beg to differ. Sharknado is awesomely bad. Troll 2 is just bad. ;)

In general, "awesomely bad" requires a song, TV show, or film to make a genuine effort to be cheesy/campy/awful. AFAIK, the producer/director of Troll 2 still insists that he made a good movie, and felt insulted when cast members said otherwise in the past. Somehow, I doubt anyone at SyFy thought Sharknado was supposed to be good.

Good point. Language differences hurt Troll 2 (saw a doc on it; not too proud to admit that). But we agree there is bad bad, and "good" bad. Which is the whole point of this convo.

Sharknado is so bad I could watch it everyday

We saw the same documentary. Didn't the producer write the scripts in Italian, and someone did a very poor job of translating them into English? :D

Yeah, the production crew/director were Italian, and the actors weren't, and no one could translate, etc, so much miscommunication, and of course not a great movie to begin with....boomdone.

The Family:

Kind of a dark comedy, but overall simple Hollywood romp with big names in it. About a former mafia guy and his family in the Witness protection program. It's a time-killer at best. Not enough laughs to really garner a higher recommendation.

Into The White:

One of the better movies I've seen in the past couple years. Lukas and Nieboer excel in their roles as German and British officers (respectively) who find them and a couple fellow airmen in the same desolate Norwegian cabin after shooting each other down. I can't recommend this movie more. It is added to my "buy" list.

EDIT: Into The White reminded me quite a bit of Joyeux Noel (2005) which is also a VERY good movie.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

I may give that one a try (Into the White) despite it only getting 50% on RT.

I never look at those sites. My tastes are too all over the board to get a good read on a movie (besides the super obvious ones, like The Godfather or Jack And Jill). :)

The Man With The Iron Fists is about to start on HBO. What a crazy, f'ed up movie, and it's awesome. Stars Rza, Russell Crowe, and Lucy Liu.

Has anybody seen Sita Sings the Blues? I just saw a couple excerpts and it looks fantastic.

Wife and I just saw Rhyme & Reason finally this past weekend (only 17 years late). Loved it; recommend for anybody interested in the the history of hip hop.

Why is Tammy a thing?

I'd rather watch Adam sandler's worst hits for a week straight than see that movie.

Re: The Movie Thread: New, Rented, Whatever....I don't care

“The Boy” (15yo) asked if I would take him to see Transformers – Age of Extinction last night. Show time 9:20pm, and I was reluctant to go with that whole ‘work-thing’ going-on the next day knowing we would get back late, but I reluctantly agreed to take him. While sitting in the theater waiting for the show to start (15-minutes late, due to technical issues), I found-out that the flick was 2hrs 45mins long. So now I am really regretting my decision, knowing I wouldn’t get-home until 12:30am! But I reminded myself that this was for “the Boy”, not for me.

So the lights go-down with me in a ‘foul-mode’, and this movie quickly pulled me out of that ‘funk’! Many similarities to the first three movies, with the most-notable difference being the absence of Shia LaBeouf (although Mark Wahlberg filled that role almost perfectly). Definitely held my attention for the full 2.75hrs. We both thought this fourth installment in the saga was excellent.

Fans of the prior Transformers movies will certainly not be disappointed. For those questioning how the change of ‘human characters’ will affect the film, I must admit that the new cast-of-characters was quite refreshing.

Cheers,
~TTF

Funny, I just heard a review this morning from the local reviewer that just trashed the movie. Said it was the worst of the four.
