Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Huff's numbers tended to tail off the last half of the season. The pros like his size though.

Opie can play Juniors another season yet so someone still might pick him up over the next year. Was Opie tenacious enough to go in the corners and fight for the puck?

Yes he was Bill, we were both very impressed with him. Opie reminded me of Cepis a little when he was at BGSU.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

This was posted on Niels-Erik Ravn's website this week:

"I am pleased to tell that I am heading to Michigan where I will join the "Lakers" Div.1 hockey team of Lake Superior State University and an exciting Engineering Program. I am starting from scratch."

So it looks like he is our guy. At least HE thinks so! :)

Nice to see he seems excited about the academics also.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

The two incomeing goalies should push each other. I agree it is nice to see he is very excited for the edjucation part of the deal.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Good to see we finally locked up Ravn, if anyone could give me a little backstory and stats on both he and Kapalka that would be great...i don't follow either of their leagues or teams very closely so any info would be greatly appreciated!

Go to this site, click on rankings on the top bar, then scroll down on the left side and click on their respective leagues, CJHL and OJAHL.

I think this is a purely statistical site, not incorporating any subjective input such as what do the pros think of any particular guy.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

I'm the wrong one to do this, as I probably only attended 20-25 Laker games this decade, but the "Teams of the Decade" thread got me thinking about what a "Laker Team of the Decade" would look like.

Bolded only to clarify the list.

Forwards:
Perkovich Schwab MacVoy
Campbell Schoefield Cheesman
Ward Cassiani Eves
Sim Davis Acton

D:
Smith Gysbers
Kaunisto Scoran
Fauci McJanet

G:
Jakaitis
BMW
Violin

Thoughts?

I'd take Trotman or Power over several of the guys listed here, but one year didn't seem enough to put them on an all decade team.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

How good is this goalie the Lakers are bringing in?
Both Ravn and Kapalka had very good stats on teams that were a little better than middle of the pack in their respective leagues.

Ravn had a 2.74 ga average and a .920 save % (regular season)

Kapalka had a 2.84 ga average and a .923 save % (regular season)

Both are considered to be excellent goalies.

Also see the Goalies World link I posted earlier today.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Not sure if this has been mentioned here or not, but I read that LSSU will be going to Ni****ing University (sorry it blanks it out) for two games mid season this year. No dates were provided.

Ni****ing Lakers also play Michigan Tech and NMU in early October (in Michigan)

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

A nice thing about landing the two new young goalies and having BMW healthy by fall is that Steves 3 day precamp will get them on the fast track in their development. The techniques and drills they learn will be used all year long, and the video analysis of their tendencies and weaknesses is an addition to what has been available in the past at LSSU.

This was THE year to get this started, as the new guys will get to work with Steve throughout their LSSU careers, developing year to year into top net minders. BMW will benefit from new techniques and analysis moving into his senior year. This is planned as a key part of the player development program.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Has anyone up in the Soo area gone across the river to watch any of the Dudley Hewitt Cup games, in particular Oakville and Kellan Lain?

As i have only been here for 3 years i am hardly the utmost authority for the master list but i agree with the players you selected from my era, although i would move around the order of the some of the players you listed, i would list kaunisto on the first defensive pairing...neither he nor gysbers are what i would call shutdown d-men but i would take kaunisto over gysbers for the simple fact that kaunisto had the catch-up speed to correct mistakes when he was beaten..I would also put Schofield as the first center over Schwab and put Schwab as the 3rd best center behind Cassiani..Schofield is the most talented player i have seen hands down since i have been here (including Perky) and I would go so far as to say that he would be the safest bet to someday to put on an NHL sweater... Freddie had a great freshmen year and I think he would have put up more points last year if his linemates would have been more consistent lineup wise, his wingers were constantly being juggled around leaving him hardpressed to develop any chemistry..Schwab was a decent center but wasn't as hard a worker or as naturally talented as Freddie... Concerning the next decade's all decade team I would consider it a succesful coming decade if Schofield, Power, Trotman and BMW were the only current players to make the list..we have been making small yet significant gains in recruiting and if we start picking up more Colin Campbell type recruits I see a few trips to the Joe and an NCAA trip or two in the Lakers new decade future...

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

This sounds great. How is it any different than what LSSU has done with its goalies in the past, though? Goaltending seems to have been the least of the Lakers' problems over the last decade.

DopeyBaker..... Take a look at the NorrisCenterproject.com site to review Steves credentials and experience. He brings world class coaching techniques and mentoring to the goalies and has worked with some of the best. I believe he can bring a new look at how the tenders do everything, drills, techniques, attitudes, etc. He also works with quality youth goalies and hopefully several will want to work with him in the D-1 setting, with his reputation of getting folks to the next level. He is well connected in Tier 1 Jrs and the NHL. All this should make recruiting top level guys for the Lakers routine.

I disagree regarding the quality of goaltending over the past 10 years......
With the exception of the Jakitius years, recent LSSU goaltending has not been at a consistent D-1 level. Consistency will be the key, and yearly development should be seen. There are ZERO LSSU tenders in the NHL or AHL. That is the level of goal tender that needs to be developed to win in the CCHA, and establish the Lakers as a place that can develop someone to the next level. THAT is how you recruit talented tenders in the future.

I agree with your general idea that great goaltending is a key to success but I think it is unwise to use the number of goaltenders in the NHL as a barometer for a school's competence in finding good goaltenders over the years...Of the 40 goaltenders who played the most regular season games this past NHL season only 7 (Quick, Miller, Howard, Elliot, Turco, Roloson, Thomas) played in the NCAA and only 2 (Miller and Turco) came from CCHA schools...I think we can all agree there has been some exceptional goaltending in the CCHA over the last decade but it just hasn't translated into NHL success, because it is in fact a different style of game...BMW is not on the same level of Blaine Lacher and other truly "great" Laker goaltenders of the past, and don't get me wrong I would be thrilled if this new expansion brought in higher tiered talent to the goaltending position, but BMW was the least of our problems this past season and I would have to say that out of the 5 big tangibles on a hockey team (offense, defense, goaltending, special teams play and coaching) that goaltending has without a doubt been the least of our problems of those 5 aspects.
