Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Worse Frozen Four games I have ever seen. The losing teams managed a total of two goals in three games between them and the winning teams managed a total of 20 goals for the three games.

I never liked the idea of the Frozen Four in a football stadium, but thought I should at least give it a try. Aside from the games not being close at the end, our seats were by far the worst we've ever had. The games weren't watchable from our original seats. We had the Guest Services folks move us to where we could at least see most of the ice surface. We wound up watching from the handicapped seats (both game days) at the top of the lower bowl. View wasn't bad, but a long way from the ice. Atmosphere was very sterile and quiet, lacking the electricity normally found at a Frozen Four. The only way I would ever consider going go to a Frozen Four in a football stadium again is if the Lakers were playing in it, and I'm not even sure if I'd go then. Saw a handful of folks with Lakers jerseys on.

Oakville defeated Newmarket 4 games to 2 to win the Buckland Cup, and will be playing in the Dudley Cup in the Canadian Soo next week. Those of you in the Soo area will have the opportunity to get a look at Kellan Lain then.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Hi since this seems to be a pool of experts, I'd like to understand the difference in budget between teams since I though they all had a "18 scholarship cap".
Do some teams have something more to offer ?
Is LSSU's budget lower than the allowed 18 scholarship ?
Is there any hidden trick to atrack players ?
Thanks ;)

Let me jump here also, since there are knowlegable folks here. I am kind of new to all of this and I operate by the only dumb question is one that is not asked. 1) Scholarship money. Is that a part of the school budget?
2) Money for travel and visits to schools. Does this come from the school budget also? 3) Are these monies donated to the school for these purposes? Thanks.

In all honesty, I don't the specific break out of money to support the hockey program at LSSU. In general, it is part of the athletic budget and is supplemented by donations (ideally endowments). I believe Doug Weight established a hockey endowment for LSSU several years back. I'm not sure if any of the other Laker greats such as Jim Dowd or Brian Rolston have done the same.

Hi Bill and everyone. I'm not sure, but several elements seem to indicate the same direction.
His Ottawa organization (Junior Senators) say they are not aware or any commitment, but they are known in the League to be lousy, and disloyal to their players.
Given his performance throughout season and play-offs, it sounds surprising that not even a Div.3 has hooked him.
I was told long time ago that he didn't consider any other school than LSSU, and, on this side, I haven't heard of any other goalie (a "Googling" gave tons of results including this one).

As it looks like that his immigration file is being processed at LSSU, it could be that be that he is just being quiet until things become official.

The whole situation seems kind of strange. I think the official spring-summer signing period has just opened up, so if he has in fact verbally committed to the Lakers, they could make an announcement before long (once he signs an LOI). Or at least when his immigration status is finalized if that takes a while longer yet. From my perspective, the only reason I can see that it is plausible he might be coming to LSSU is that BMW only has one more season, and the coaching staff has been able to juggle scholarship money to cover both Ravn and Kapalka to some degree next season. The Lakers budget normally doesn't include much for a #3 goalie. Yes, they found a bit extra for Edmondson this past season, but normally a #3 goalie at LSSU can't expect much if any scholarship help. If Ravn does come to LSSU, then there would be no clear cut #3 goalie going into next season. BMW has the #1 slot going in, but it would then be like having a couple of #2 goalies. They could then bring in a true #3 goalie for the 2011-2 season. If Ravn does become a part of the Lakers team next season, great, but I'm still not sure what to make of this situation. He can't play juniors any more because of his age.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Laker54 .....

All scholarships are provided through the schools budget and the Lakers are fully funded to NCAA limits. Endowed scholies reduce the cost to the school to operate the program.

The recruiting budget consists of money provided from the school specific for coaches travel, bringing in recruits, etc. It is a specific $$ amount but it is inclusive to the "Hockey Budget", with the HC designating its use.

Donations can be made specific to the hockey program and designated for "recruiting" through the LSSU Foundation.

Hope that helps with your question.

Sounds about right. Thanks for filling in some of the details, 3dognight.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

With the Spring-Summer LOI signing period underway, we should see an article out of the Soo sometime in the next month or so with the official announcement about next season's recruits. Last year it came out on May 13. Hopefully the third goalie will be finalized soon, but I don't think they will hold up the news article if that is still up in the air.

Traverse City and Oakville are still playing in Junior playoffs, so some of our future Lakers are still in action. Kelin Ainsworth had a goal tonight in a TC win.

PerkyforPrez, did you ever get down to see Traverse City play?

Bill we are going down to watch game 2 saturday night, we will be sitting in the polar bear den. I watched the highlights on 9&10 tonight and saw Ainsworth's goal in their 4 to 1 win friday night.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

The Traverse city North stars game was very entertaining and well worth the trip. I would not hesitate going to see them when they get back to T.C.

Radke was very impressive getting a ton of ice time, he skated well handeled the puck well in any situation even strength, power play, short handed, in the corners and was strong in front of the net and screening the goalie. He looks bigger then the 5' 9" that he is listed on the web site. He played tougher then i thought he would.

Kyle Jean was impressive and he also got lots of ice time. He is big, skates well, handles the puck well, has nice balance and he uses his large frame to shield the the puck from the defender.

Ainsworth didn't seem to get much ice time the first part of the game. I noticed him on the ice once in the first period, the second half of the game he seemed to be on the ice more regularly. He did not stand out in any way good or bad, in his defence he may have not had it tonight or something.

The T.C. goalie Strandberg was very impressive. He may not have been tested much but he is very quick, athletic and very aggressive out not giveing the shooter much to look at.

For it only being the first time seeing these young men play these are just my first impression of them and like i said maybe Ainsworth was ill or didn't have it or something.

Thanks for the summary PerkyforPrez. I tend to think Ainsworth will play another season in Traverse City. He's still pretty young; just turned 18 at the end of last year. Like you said, it's hard to judge from watching just one game. Jean still sounds a little raw, but has a lot of potential. He fought illness and injury this season and didn't put up as good as numbers as last season. I think the Laker coaches feel that Radke is the most ready of the recruited TC forwards to step in and help the Lakers.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

I agree with your thoughts bill. I see that Paliafito for T.C. has signed with Sacred Heart but Strandberg i think is yet to sign. I wonder if the coaches even considered him ?

I noticed that too but it looks like Paliafito is replacing Sacred Hearts third stringer who is graduating. So maybe Strandberg is holding out for something better. Anyway could you tell us how our recruits looked in comparison to Ferris State recruits Andy Huff and Garret Thompson. Thanks.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Of the 5 skaters that are commited to play for the Lakers or Ferris i would say that Radke looked the best but it was just one game.

Huff is a real good player he looks like he is quite physical with some skill to go with it, a high energy type guy.

Thompson is really good too very physical and a hustler. I would say he is the rawest of them but he will be real good with time for Ferris.

The most impressive player of the night was that little tiny Tim Opie man that kid is grease lightning out there with very high skills.

Huff's numbers tended to tail off the last half of the season. The pros like his size though.

Opie can play Juniors another season yet so someone still might pick him up over the next year. Was Opie tenacious enough to go in the corners and fight for the puck?
