"The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Thanks Bill...I thought I read in this thread that Roque recruited Marble because he was afraid he might lose him to another program? If that is true, it implies that scholarship $$ was used - why else would he commit to LSSU at such a young age?
I don't really know if scholarship $ was promised/committed. Given the small size of the LSSU Hockey recruiting budget, I doubt they would have promised/committed very much $ to Marble. I don't think the coaching staff would generally take that type of a gamble on someone as young (when he committed) as Marble unless they were sure he was a "can't miss" prospect. I could be wrong about that, but I think the LSSU coaches try to very careful how they spend their recruiting budget. Committing a lot of $ to Marble goes against the grain of what I've heard about LSSU recruiting.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Interesting discussion on recruits.

The "recruiting budget" is specific to the coaches going to visit a player and / or paying for the player to visit campus. Travel / housing /meals etc. LSSU has been at the lower end of the CCHA. That does somewhat limit the number of trips coaches take and more importantly, limits the players & families they invite to campus. Scholie $$ are a different fund and LSSU fully funds to NCAA limit of 18 scholies.

Larger schools can have a top guy come out routinely and go see him several times, the Lakers have often limited campus visits to guys the are "closing" on, due to $$. This is being addressed by the Project group but we do not yet have a solid agreement with LSSU.

From the beginning the norris center project has been more than a building, but it is always a complex situation working within the NCAA Regs. AD Kris Dunbar has been great in working the process with us, and we are always cautious to make sure we get everything done correctly. We are hoping to have several announcements on the web page in the next couple of weeks on several topics.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

So it sounds like we're still looking for another goalie for next season, probably someone targeted to take over for Edmondson as the #3 goalie. Beyond that, we should be starting to have visits from guys targeted for the 2011-12 class, at all positions. Although already committed to LSSU, I think Ainsworth may wind up being in the 2011-12 class, assuming we don't lose Schofield (or anyone else) early to the pros this off-season. And I suspect Marble will be in that class also, if he gets here at all.

Big upset RIT over Dakota. I watched the game and RIT never stopped playing their game.

Do you know if Ravn's English skills, particularly reading and writing, are good? He could be having problems with the SAT. If that's the case, he would have a problem getting a scholarship at any NCAA school.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Poor NMU lost a heartbreaker in double overtime to St. Cloud. NMU hasn't won a NCAA tourney game since 1993 so our drought (1996) is not as bad as NMU's.

Not sure about that, I don't think English is his first language. Wouldn't that be something they would know before spending recruiting $$ ?

I don't know at what point some of these kids take their SATs nowadays. I was thinking that they may have been told he was a good student but just hadn't taken his SAT yet. I'm sure they have an idea of how a kid has done academically before they actively recruit him; I'm just not sure of the SAT timing. There could be an entirely different reason why he's no longer in the mix.

Ravn's SAT is said to be very good, and he is admitted as transfer from OttawaU to LSSU Engineering ... can't be that bad.
I checked his GoaliesWorld ranking http://x.vu/gwcjhl he is number 1 which I guess is okay (Saunders who was mentioned is far behind, which is consistent with local comments).
At Ottawa they say he mentioned joining LSSU on TV some months ago. I don't know whether that was before or after visiting the campus with his parents.
Not sure he changed his mind, but I'll try to find out what happened ... if anybody is interested :)

News now up on the Norris Center Project site "News" button..... that will affect Laker goaltenders beginning this fall!

We are hoping having Steve available to work with Brian and the young goalies will lead to their development from year to year in this critical position. In addition, Steve works with about 400+ goalies a year in his camps and clinics. His addition could make LSSU attractive some of the best of that group. His mini clinic this year (and next) will 'jump start" things, heading into the 2012 proposed S&C program.

Thanks 3dognight. Keep those updates coming.

Great game at Fort Wayne last night. Michigan was pretty much firing on all cylinders except for putting the puck in the net. They had a ton of great scoring chances compared to Miami, but couldn't put enough of them behind Knapp. He played really well in net for Miami, plus Michigan just couldn't finish off some of their best chances. And Miami benefited from a quick whistle in the 1st OT.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Steven Kaunisto was released by the Reading Royals after 4 games, tallying 1 goal and 1 assist.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Lain's playoff numbers are looking pretty good which is good news for Lake State sinse he is comeing back from that terrible injury last year at this time.

Any other rumors out there goalies, Norris project or anything else?

Oakville beat Kingston 4 games to 3 (all games decided by one goal) to win the OJAHL playoffs, so Lain still has some games to play. Oakville plays Newmarket (CCHL) next, and I think the winner of that series comes up to Soo Ontario to play in the Dudley Cup. You may get the chance to see Lain play in a couple of weeks across the river if you're so inclined.

I imagine the coaches are still out watching some Junior games. There are still some league tournaments going on, so they likely are out looking for a goalie for next season and also at potential recruits for the 2011-12 season.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

I was watching the Wings-Flyers game on Sunday, and I thought I heard Doc Emrick say something about a new skate guard that was developed at Lake Superior State. I poked around on google and found this article about it:

http://hockey-blog-in-canada.blogspot.com/2010/01/breaking-foot-news.html

Looks like a good design, and some good press for the Prototype Development Center at LSSU.
Cool article.

Oakville and Newmarket are tied at a game apiece. We should know somewhere between this weekend and the middle of next week whether Kellan Lain will be making an appearance in the Canadian Soo for the Dudley Cup.
