Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

If anyone is making the trip to Fort Wayne there are local restaraunts that are much better than steak and shake.

Better than Steak and Shake? No way.

Actually, there are about 20 Steak and Shakes in Michigan, so it's not really an Indiana treat.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

C'Mon Proud2ba.....I wasn't talking fine dining here :)

I NEVER miss the opportunity for Shake & Steak! I did see one in Kazoo last trip there....any closer?

The Coliseum actually has a nice selection of food during the game.

I second Mad Anthonys as a nice choice.

I admit i sure wasn't the biggest fan of Paul VanWagner with his play by play but i sure do miss him and the other people that got layed off. If they were still working for the station i'm sure we would be getting some kind of information or interviews.

I miss the podcast as well of the Lakers Shows, next year they (the new regime) better have their act together or think hard about hireing back some of the old staff to hold their hands.

I think they will have things back to normal at the station by the start of next season. We should have streams of the Laker Hockey Show back, and probably podcasts of the games and shows as well. I think things happened so fast when the sale occurred that they weren't prepared to carry on with business as usual, mainly due to merging and purging of personnel.

I'm looking forward to the Midwest Regional games this weekend. Hopefully there will be some good close games.

AMEN!!!!! VanWagner would probably be talking to the coaching staff about the frozen four, schedules for next year, recruiting being done, the expansion of the hockey facilities,etc..
It may have been just a 5 or 10 minute chat on coffee with the coach but at least it's something.

The renovation and expansion look to be a slam dunk for the university. At least it will look nice and have top of the line amenities for the student athletes to better themselves, as for the fans, we still won't know ***** about whats happening with the hockey program because less radio station employees = more money for the radio station and thats a shame!

I hope so Bill but if i remember correctly they were haveing a lot of tech problems even with the internet feeds the last year they had the contract. That does not mean they won't have things tip top for the start of the season but i have my reservations.

Looking forward to the banquet comeing up and the big golf tournament on the 26th of June. It's not even April yet and i'm already jonesing for Laker Hockey.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

I was locked out of internet radio until the old crew took over again...WinAmp????? never worked well for us out of towners. I always like Bill Crawford on the mike. Lots of hockey knowledge, and an honest call of the game. I didn't mind the newer guys, and did enjoy the longer post game show, but Bill knows his hockey!

I hope hockey show gets streamed next year though as I never get up for that

Planning some hockey related news this weekend on norris center site, for folks desperate for something. Just awaiting t's to be crossed & i's dotted.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

WinAmp worked OK for me. I agree that you can get a good feel for how the Lakers are playing by listening to Bill C call the game, although I suspect that Jim Roque has felt in the past that Bill was being too critical of the team at times.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Thanks 3dog for the info. I never did get winamp to work but atleast i live close enough to receive 99.5 fairly strong. The Laker show on 1400 was some thing that ticked me off. I'm a big fan of Bill Crawford it's easier following the game with the way he comes across the radio.

I do have a lot of respect for VanWagner in bringing all the other things that he brought to the table. I wish him nothing but the best.

Maybe the station can merge some old and new stuff together. I to like Bill C. at the mike better than VanWaggoner, as Bill C. calls a good game, however i did like the "get to know your Laker" segments between periods, the pregame program, the podcasts of the hockey show, and generally more info coming out of the Taffy Abel for the casual fan or student.

I guess a little bit of change or freshness was nice, kinda along the lines of what 3dognight said in an earlier post about the expansion and the "old farts at the table" quote with what younger people want these days.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

LSSU has a pretty small recruiting budget
Hi since this seems to be a pool of experts, I'd like to understand the difference in budget between teams since I though they all had a "18 scholarship cap".
Do some teams have something more to offer ?
Is LSSU's budget lower than the allowed 18 scholarship ?
Is there any hidden trick to atrack players ?
Thanks ;)

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

I think what Bill is refering to is about the cost of travel planes, trains and automobiles. And most schools do have more money in the budget for that so JR says.

I think the big 3 conferences (WCHA, CCHA, Hockey East) all have 18 scholarships to offer. I know some of the other leagues have less. Most of the Ivy league schools in the ECAC offer some type of financial assistance to their recruits, but don't offer what you would call athletic scholarships. Pretty much all teams have in the neighborhood of 24-27 players on their roster, so not everyone is getting a full scholarship (or financial assistance); the scholarships are split up among the guys on the roster. Some of the high end payers do get full scholarships, especially at some of the bigger schools, but most college players are on partial scholarships. The total number of scholarships just can't exceed 18, or whatever smaller number there is for some conferences, regardless of how they are split up.

When I've talked about a small recruiting budget, that means the money to go out and scout and recruit players, as PerkyforPrez has indicated. Usually a lot of schools are after the same high end players, so if you don't have a very big recruiting budget it's a big gamble to try and visit the same high end guy multiple times trying to talk him into playing for your school. For the schools with smaller budgets, you don't want to waste a big chunk of your budget chasing one or two guys unless you think you have a very good shot at getting them. For the schools with big recruiting budgets, it's not that big of a deal if they spend more chasing a guy but don't wind up getting him. They still have plenty of money left to go after other guys

You also see a lot of the big name programs getting commitments from younger and younger kids all the time. This has especially become true over the past 5-10 years. It's a gamble going after these kids, because you can never be sure if they'll develop into big time college players, but if you're a big name school with a big recruiting budget you can afford to take that chance. If a specific kid doesn't pan out, you're probably going to get others that do. But it takes a lot of money to play this "futures'' recruiting game.

It would be nice to know when a player is recruited at Lake State, how many other schools actually went after that same player. Less schools that go after a guy probably means less talent that player has. I would hate to think Roque is recruiting players that most schools have no desire in trying to recruit.

Unfortunately, it does not look good for LSSU when they recruit a player "early" and he becomes a seldom-used back-up goalie at the junior level. Rink chatter in Ottawa says Ravn no longer in the mix for a goalie spot with Lake Superior.

Hey Watcher,
Any ideas for goalies around your area still available?

Sometimes you hear that and sometimes you don't. I'm sure the coaches know.

Therein lies the problem. E. g., If Minnesota, BC, MSU, and Michigan are all recruiting a player, should LSSU use scarce recruiting dollars to try for him? That's the dilemma for the coaching staff - how to spend those dollars wisely. Where other schools can visit/watch a player multiple times, we have limits on doing that. Twenty years ago the opportunity to find that "diamond in the rough" was much greater than it is today - can you imagine a Doug Weight not being recruited by anyone in today's world? With the resources, Lake State has, "impact" players are harder to land and (as we all know) betting on the future development of player is a tough call.

The changes that have been recently announced are great but just part of the picture. The other side of the coin is to get the recruiting budget increased and that means getting buy in and leadership from the administration. To be more successful, the assistant coaches need to be able to get out more and we need to have the $$ to bring recruits in to see it.

I'm not surprised about Ravn. That's kind of been my feeling for some time now, even though there was a post a while back from a Laker fan who thought Ravn may still be coming to LSSU. I'm not sure what cooled things between LSSU and Ravn. As far as Marble goes, I tend to think that LSSU didn't really go out and "recruit" him so much as he had an interest in attending LSSU due to family connections to Jim Roque, and he committed with Roque's permission. Unless he makes big improvements wherever he plays junior hockey next season (assuming he does so), I'm not so sure we'll ever see him on the Lakers roster.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Thanks Bill...I thought I read in this thread that Roque recruited Marble because he was afraid he might lose him to another program? If that is true, it implies that scholarship $$ was used - why else would he commit to LSSU at such a young age?
