Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

889294- Miami comes up in the last series of the season, per prelim schedule.

What no NMU on the last weekend, thats different. Any news coming out of the expansion project for the summer or next fall?

Can you post a prelim schedule if you have it? We all know things can change but it would give everyone a chance to see whats going on for next year.

I would like to say THANK YOU to you and the private donors for helping out LSSU hockey and all LAKER athletics. We all hope this project will help the LAKERS get back to a possible NCAA birth now and again but it really begins with the coaches and players.

Just because you have the resources doesnt make you successful, its what you do with the resources that makes you successful...

The Lakers are supposed to play at NMU February 4-5 according to someone from NMU that posted a prelim. schedule for the Wildcats on their thread here.

I'd also like to thank you to the private donors as well. The CCHA is going to be tougher with OSU and WMU landing some great head coaches. LSSU is gonna need all the help they can get.

Dam_, playing out of town again during I-500 weekend... I still think they're missing the boat by not hosting NMU every year during I-500 weekend. There are so many people from Marquette that head to the Sault for the race, it could be a marketing marriage made in heaven if they promoted it right.. (plus I always enjoyed walking up to the rink after the race to watch the game :D)

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Motels that are non-chain affiliated-Laker Inn, Seaway Motel and Lawson Motel. All right by each other on the main drag and close to the University. Dinner try the Antlers on Portage Ave. Beer, try the Hilltop:eek: just kidding, go to Moloneys on Portage Ave. it's a pretty decent college bar with a bunch of beers on tap. Soo Locks Boat tour is cool for about 20 bucks (not sure how late in the year it runs) Go check out Pullar Stadium. Also go check out the Hounds in Soo, Canada. They got a brand new rink that's gotten rave reviews and they should have a real strong team next year. That's my list.
I stayed in the Seaway quite a few years ago. Nice clean place, although the rooms were very small and dated. They may have done some remodeling by now (don't know for sure), although the rooms would still be small. I usually stay at the Hampton Inn now when I go up for a Lakers series.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

I do not have a prelim with me on this computer and I am on the road for a few weeks, sorry. The schedule should only be an LSSU announcement and we never want to take any "Juice" from their plans. Regarding resources; resources do not make you a champion but it is **** near impossible to become a champion without them.

Top players want to know you can get them to the next level. That is why they go to programs with a track record of doing that. These kids have little or no knowledge of Rolston, Weight, and the championship years of LSSU. They know programs that place 2-3 guys in the NHL every few years.

This comprehensive project will allow every player get better every single year they are a Laker. That is what players, parents, and teams that place their draft choices want to see. It supports the current Lakers & coaching staff, supplementing what LSSU can do in facilities, S&C and specialty support. It is a PROGRAM BUILDER. LSSU already provides the NCAA max scholies, there are still challenges in some operational funding areas, but they are things that can be resolved with fan support at the gate and with their wallets.

This is a project LSSU can recruit with TODAY, but the bang will come in a year or two after the full program is in effect, and we start to move kids on...

We have evaluated over 30 design-build firms to work on the project and have reduced that number dramatically, with a final decision targeted for this summer. We have Steve's clinic this fall. Each step of the process takes time....and we will take all of the time we need to get each step done right, the right facilities, the right support people, right with the NCAA, the right technologies. Don't look for a monthly bit of news, we are committed to doing this right....not right now. This is a one time shot at setting the stage for the next 10-12 years of the program.

ONWARD!!

We should be getting the official 2010-11 recruiting class news article any time now.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

The JR leagues in Ontario are considered watered done and weak to say the least too many bad teams.I for one would hold my breath on any recruits from there until you see them. My take is that we recruit there because most schools are avoiding the league because of what I had written above.

Oakville was in the RBC and faired poorly.

It's true that many folks feel that the talent in CCHL and OJAHL has been spread too thin and there are too many weak teams. There are rumors that some of the weaker teams will cease operations before next season and/or consolidate with other teams. That said, a lot of Div 1 schools do recruit there, especially from the CCHA and on to the East. Despite the overall imbalance in the Ontario leagues, there are still some very good players to be found there. The WCHA doesn't recruit too much in the Ontario leagues although Minnesota just got a commitment from goalie Joel Vienneau of the Kingston Voyageurs, the former team of Laker Ben Power. The WCHA tends to recruit geographically more from the Midwest on the West. A lot of teams in the ECAC, Hockey East and Atlantic Hockey have guys from the Ontario Jr A leagues playing for them. Some of the CCHA teams do also.

LSSU recruits the Ontario Jr A leagues pretty heavily for geographical reasons. We don't have a very big recruiting budget, so even though the BCHL and AJHL put out a lot of good players, we don't have the money to make a lot of recruiting trips to those leagues. The SJHL is about the limit of our Western recruiting although once in a while we snag someone from the AJHL (or even the BCHL). It is what it is. Without more money for recruiting, don't expect LSSU to do much recruiting in the BCHL or AJHL.

The fact that Oakville didn't do very well in the RBC this year doesn't mean anything. They just had a bad few days. You can't judge a league's strength by the performance of only one of its teams over a few day stretch.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

This is a bit of a surprise (May 15 article):

http://michigancollegehockey.blogspot.com/

Makes me wonder if an underclassman isn't coming back. Could even be someone like Kraft, or perhaps Wall (who is expected back after a year at Alexandria in the NAHL). Or maybe this Shkreli kid is coming in as a walk-on. Anyone up in the Soo hear anything? If not, I guess we'll see what the story is in the Fall, or maybe when the final 2010 recruiting news article is released by the school (which could be anytime now).

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Bowling Green released their schedule today. They will be at Abel Arena December 3-4 and we will be at BGSU January 28-29.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Bruneteau Commits to DI Program
Congratulations to Stars captain Matt Bruneteau! Bruneteau has committed to play at Lake Superior State beginning in the 2010-11 season. Bruneteau was the first Nebraska native to play for the Stars.

Re: "The Lake Show" - LSSU Laker Hockey

Don't the Lakers have enough players who can't score?
Bruneteau is a defenseman so his scoring numbers aren't necessarily that important, although it would be nice to have another guy on defense who also has more offensive capability. It seems that the Lakers already had enough players period before these last two commitments. Kind of a strange wind up to the recruiting season. Makes one wonder if we're losing one or two underclassmen, or if Roque is just stocking up on recruited walk-ons.

I think getting the captain of a USHL team is pretty exciting, regardless of the reason we are adding more recruits.

That being said, we must be losing somebody. If everyone stays and all the expected recruits report, that brings the roster size to 27, which seems too big.

Blind River sensation Brett Findlay, a 1992 birth year centre who led the Beavers in scoring as a rookie in ‘09-10, is getting some attention from Division 1 U.S. college recruiters following a stellar performance at a Prospects Camp in Toronto a few weekends ago. Among the schools who have shown an early interest in Findlay are Ferris State, Michigan State, Michigan Tech and Lake Superior State. just found this on the osprey blog. i hope we don't wait to long on this kid, he has good potential.

The Lakers do keep an eye on kids in the NOJHL, and the coaches do attend these Prospects Camps. The NOJHL as a whole is considered weak compared to other Ontario Junior A leagues. I'm sure they are aware of Findlay and if he is indeed good enough he'll get a scholarship somewhere. One of the unknowns about any potential recruit is, does he want to stay close to home to play college hockey or does he want to go further away? And yes, going after a kid early does help; I think that's how the Lakers got Colin Campbell.

NOJHL players are occasionally hyped in the Osprey Blog as Div 1 prospects, but few of them actually achieve that goal so you have to look at those Osprey entries with just a bit of a grain of salt. That doesn't mean you can't find some decent Div 1 players in the NOJHL. The Lakers had Jeff Rainville and Barnabas Birkeland several years back, and MSU currently has Brett Perlini, all who played for the Thunderbirds. Some of the better NOJHL players move on to other Junior A leagues to improve their scholarship (or Major Junior) chances.

A third of the recruits coming in this season are off the Traverse City team. Are the players coming out of there that good or is it a very convenient recruiting base being so close and cost effective.

It's a combination of things. Given that Anthony Palumbo and Mike Matteucci are coaching at TC, and TC's closeness to the Soo, I think it creates a natural pipeline. In the cases of kids like Radke and Jean, they already had Soo connections. I think there is an effort to funnel kids the Lakers are looking at (while still young) to play for TC. Ainsworth is an example of that. There was some thought that he might play in the USHL after playing for Thunder Bay (SIJHL) the season before last, but I think Palumbo (and maybe Roque) may have talked him into playing for TC instead where they can track his development more closely.
